If you're having a can of soup...

... do you have a whole can or just half?

I've just noticed that a serving is half a can - Surely that isn't enough? I've been over indulging in soup for years!

It depends on whether or not I'm having something with it. If it's the whole meal, I might eat the whole can.

"Serving sizes" are sometimes completely ridiculous in order to make it look like the amount of salt or sugar per serving isn't terribly unhealthy. It's a silly game, because obviously people still eat more than the "serving size"!

Ideasplease322 · 26/10/2020 13:19

Half of I am having bread rolls with it.

If it’s just the soup, whole can

Topseyt · 26/10/2020 13:20

You can't even fit a full can in a normal sized bowl

You certainly can. They fit easily into my breakfast bowls.

We have a whole can each. Half a can is absolutely nothing. Yesterday I had a broccoli and stilton one with some fresh bread I had made.

LaBellina · 26/10/2020 13:21

Usually half a can, but I would often eat it with a sausage roll or and omelette with bread.

gincakecomps · 26/10/2020 13:22

Always whole can with bread.

Potnoodleforbrains · 26/10/2020 13:22

My husband will have tin of soup with nothing 😩. Me I need a tin of soup with lots of bread to tip in and soak up all that lovelyness. I think he is wrong all wrong I tell you!!

PickAChew · 26/10/2020 13:22

You wouldn't live up to your name with half a can. You'd be bitosoupdragon.

Heinz used to do 300ml (or rather, 11floz) cans, which were perfect.

TheQueef · 26/10/2020 13:23

You crackpots that have half a can are same as the nutters who ask for half a cup of tea.

TheQueef · 26/10/2020 13:24

Wrong uns.

viques · 26/10/2020 13:24

I only buy* soup in cartons. Should I start a new thread?

*I usually make it, but buy it if reduced.

BrokenBrit · 26/10/2020 13:25

Whole can and a sandwich on the side!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/10/2020 13:26

@Iamblossom oooo thanks for the tip!

BiBabbles · 26/10/2020 13:27

Usually, I'd use all of it plus a small bread roll/slice of bread to wipe down the sides as a full meal.

I don't eat cream-based soups though, I might differ if I was having a heavier soup - with beans, chili, and similar that are more dense, I do use half or less per serving.

Half a can of broth-based soup would to me be a starter with something else like a sandwich or something more which I think would be recommended to for a more balanced meal (or less salt, but I've chronic hypotension & need to keep my sodium up) or a small meal when my appetite is really poorly.

cushioncovers · 26/10/2020 13:28

Whole can, plus toast, it needs to be a proper meal for me otherwise no point.

Evilwasps · 26/10/2020 13:28

Whole can, or half a can with a sandwich

MitziK · 26/10/2020 13:28

Whole can when it's just me, half a can when DP is sharing.

Well, as it's tomato soup, half a can, big pinch of chilli flakes and then a strong cheddar cheese sandwich in crusty white bread to dip in it.

soundsfishie · 26/10/2020 13:29

The recommended serving size is half a can so they can put lower calorie/salt figures on the front.

This ^ it's just a marketing tactic

I'm surprised at the amount of people who just eat half. It's a piss small amount of food for a grown adult. I just looked at Heinz Big Soup on the Tesco website and it has 200 calories in the whole can/tin tin/can. Who on earth is having a circa 100 calorie lunch Confused

cushioncovers · 26/10/2020 13:29

Of course you can fit a tin can of soup in a normal size bowl.

Lockheart · 26/10/2020 13:30

Is this the same sort of fuckery as the one serving of chocolate fingers = two biscuits? Because bugger that. One mouthful maybe.

I always have the whole can of soup with bread, unless I'm having a light lunch (which is a largely hypothetical situation in any event).

As you are a soup dragon half a can is clearly not enough, a whole vat of the stuff is considered to be a dragon sized portion.
HavelockVetinari · 26/10/2020 13:31

This is MN, home of the Competitive Undereaters - no doubt someone will be along soon who says that half a tin is FAR too much, and they normally split a tin between 3 and don't have room for bread on the side Grin

I'd usually eat a full tin, but I could share one as long as there was enough bread to go with it.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/10/2020 13:33

I'd be surprised if there are any 'grown adults' who don't have eating disorders who have half a can of soup as their entire meal. They could be having it as a starter, or with a sandwich, crumpets or cheese on toast, as has been said by a few on this thread, but I don't think anyone has said that the half can of soup is the meal in its entirity.

I also really want soup now, but I have some cutted up fruit that's on it's useby date and I've been avoiding all weekend, so I need to eat that.

StanfordPines · 26/10/2020 13:33

One can with a slice of bread.

amusedbush · 26/10/2020 13:34

If I had half a tin of soup for lunch I'd be chewing my desk an hour later!

NaughtipussMaximus · 26/10/2020 13:34

DS and I share a can, but with a sandwich too.
