If you're having a can of soup...

... do you have a whole can or just half?

I've just noticed that a serving is half a can - Surely that isn't enough? I've been over indulging in soup for years!

I've just looked at Tesco's app.

They sell 'tinned soup' and show the nutritional information for '½ can'.

So like most of society, they see them as interchangeable.

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/10/2020 12:52

It depends on the soup. A whole can for light soups, half a can for heavy ones (Amy's Kitchen does a lentil one that is practically solid).

Bridecilla · 26/10/2020 12:53

I've just asked skinny but huge eater dp. He said "half a can wouldn't get my bread wet"

We've just had a row as I made bread yesterday, I cut 5 slices for us to have 'whatever on toast' for lunch and he automatically assumed the THREE biggest ones were for him so I called him selfish.

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 26/10/2020 12:53

And yeah, a whole can. With a tin of fizzy juice just to really wind people up.

It's half a can, it was always half a can but your bowls are getting bigger, just like everything else.

Fairy cakes, made in the same tins my mum always used look tiny by today's standards and the "shrinking" chocolate bars people complain about have actually just gone back to to how they were in the 70s.

There's a reason people are getting fatter. That said, I don't think anyone is getting fat on tinned soup!

Mrsjayy · 26/10/2020 12:54

Oh yeah maybe it was cambells soup that he put the milk in.

jennie0412 · 26/10/2020 12:55

A whole can if just soup or havent ate breakfast/lunch, half a can if with something else (crackers and cheese or bread) Smile

Babyroobs · 26/10/2020 12:55

About two thirds of the can but then the rest invariably goes to waste.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/10/2020 12:55

Always whole for soup.
I buy the small tins of beans as I have them with other things, like nuggets and waffles or similar.

user102740264923 · 26/10/2020 12:55

Full tin is too much for me.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 26/10/2020 12:57

Am I even on mumsnet? Thirty mins in and out one hand suggested you should be making your own! Whole tin here.

transformandriseup · 26/10/2020 12:57

I tried serving up just one can for myself and DH and it looked like a toddler portion in the bowls.

bumblingbovine49 · 26/10/2020 12:58

Most tins of Soup are about 100 -150cal for half a can so with 2 slices of bread, lunch would be 300-350 cals maximum and with one slice of bread would be 200-250cals. A whole can plus 1-2 slice of bread would be around 400- 500cals

Given that I rarely snack and only eat lunch and dinner, that is way way too few calories for me. My lunches are around 500 cals and my dinner around 800-1,000 cals. I then have about 200-300cals for drinks/milk in coffee tea etc. This is about 1,800 cals a day for me

For others that would be too much food in a day and they might like more snacks and also eat breakfast so I think it depends but half a can of soup seems a really small amount of food for lunch to me

BringMeThatHorizon · 26/10/2020 12:59

A whole can definitely. The calorie count for a half can of most soups (at least the ones I have in my cupboard!) is around 100 cals.. surely that's not a actual realistic meal for most normal people unless you're on an extreme diet?

randomsabreuse · 26/10/2020 13:00

Whole can, looking at the calories in most it's well under a reasonable lunch amount, unless you're on 1000 calories per day - my TDEE to lose weight (moderately active) is about 1500!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/10/2020 13:00

I was wondering this, I've quite a small appetite, but half a metal cylindrical container only fills half a mug. Who on earth only has half a mug of soup?

RunBackwards · 26/10/2020 13:00

My mum would have added water to make the tin serve 4!

DoYouWannaBeInMyQuiche · 26/10/2020 13:00

Half, definitely.

Iamblossom · 26/10/2020 13:00

I would have the whole tin plus toast or crumpets. Anything else is just weird.

chrislilleyswig · 26/10/2020 13:01

For two of us, we share a tin. If I'm on my own, I'll have a whole tin

A whole other debate but an English friend who had moved here commented on how she would have a bowl of soup but the rest of us would have a plate of soup

Smile
karala · 26/10/2020 13:01

I might have a teaspoonful if I was particularly hungry but I wouldn't need to eat anything else for the rest of the day

Iamblossom · 26/10/2020 13:02

May I also add for those calorie counting the heinz chicken Noodle soup is delicious, filling and 128 cals for the whole tin

SionnachGeal70 · 26/10/2020 13:03

That half a can = one serving is one of my pet hates! I've tried it, and I'm still hungry after half a can, even with bread.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/10/2020 13:03

Soup is one of those weird things where half a can is too little but a full can just a little too much. It's like the whole amount is designed to serve a parent plus a small child.

You can get 300 g cans, which are just right, but the range is much smaller and oddly they often cost the same or more than full size cans.

I sometimes mix tomato soup with a bit of stock because I find it too thick, this also solves the portion size issue. I then have half of my slightly diluted soup with something like cheese on toast 2 days running.

Or I might just have the whole tin and leave a bit if I get fed up of it.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 26/10/2020 13:03

Even a whole tin is sometimes only around 200 calories! I have a whole tin.
