If you're having a can of soup...

... do you have a whole can or just half?

I've just noticed that a serving is half a can - Surely that isn't enough? I've been over indulging in soup for years!

@Wetweekend99

A whole tin. What type of bowls do people have that they can't get a whole tin in? I always have a slice of buttered bread too so clearly I'm very gluttonous!
This is my son's soup at lunch today - about 2/3 of a can. There is nowhere near enough room for another third to go in. They are, as far as I am aware, standard sized soup bowls, the same as I've been served soup in in plenty of cafes and restaurants.

A full tin of Heinz tomato soup with grated cheese and a bagel is a light lunch. By which I mean, I'm hungry again 3 hours later. I'm at the bottom end of what's considered a healthy weight.

Half a tin indeed Confused

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 26/10/2020 13:37

I have half a time because I always make a half sandwich to eat with it. If just soup then I'd be having the whole tin.

TheArchFear · 26/10/2020 13:38

MrsAvocet, that's a ramekin, not a soup bowl.

Cherrytangfastic · 26/10/2020 13:38

Off to make soup for lunch now

DataColour · 26/10/2020 13:39

Whole tin. My favourite is Co-ops Tomato and Three Bean Soup...about 250 calories. Filling, even on it's own. I add a dash of hot sauce into it.

emmathedilemma · 26/10/2020 13:41

I don't buy it but i would have the full can.

CheetasOnFajitas · 26/10/2020 13:43

Whole can.

I imagine that the half can serving size is intended for when you have soup as a starter followed by a main course, not as your whole meal. People don’t serve soup as a starter at home very often these days.

LuckyAmy1986 · 26/10/2020 13:43

We have one can between 2 but I always give my husband, or my son if I'm sharing with him, more than half, probably nearer two thirds as half isn't quite enough for them. Assuming we are talking the normal 400g size, not those smaller, one person cans that is. I wouldn't give anyone a whole can though. You can't even fit a full can in a normal sized bowl

Sorry, you have a third of a tin of soup? For a meal?

BearSoFair · 26/10/2020 13:44

Whole can if I'm having it on it's own, about 2/3rds if I've got bread as well.

Onlymeandthedognow · 26/10/2020 13:44

The whole tin if I’m having it in my soup mug, with no bread, toast etc.

Also a whole tin if I’m sharing with the dog (oxtail, chicken) she loves it on her dog mixer biscuits!

As there’s only me here, I usually heat a whole tin, but don’t finish it if I have toast, crusty bread or garlic bread -(divine with chicken soup on a winters day)

acerred · 26/10/2020 13:45

@StanfordPines

One can with a slice of bread.
a slice of bread?

Who only has 1 slice of bread with a tin of soup?! Or am I just very greedy

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/10/2020 13:45

Whole can, unless it's tomato as I find a full can to acidic, so have half & a sandwich. I agree with Cheetas I'd assume half a can is if using as a starter.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/10/2020 13:47

If it doesn't all fit in the bowl then surely you eat some then put the rest in.
It's hardly rocket science Halloween Confused

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/10/2020 13:49

I have a crusty roll with soup. If I've only got sliced bread in I'll usually have 2 slices toasted.

EggysMom · 26/10/2020 13:49

I wonder if this is a good example of portion drift? I can remember that my parents in the 1980s would share a can of soup for lunch - they added a bit of water, used to rinse out the can; and they'd have fresh bakery bread to dunk. Whereas nowadays I'd have the entire can myself, with bread.

To those with problematic bowl sizes, can I point out that Costa's huge two-handled mug can easily accommodate a full can of soup. Don't ask how I know Grin

Shizzlestix · 26/10/2020 13:50

Always the full tin.

Or buy bigger bowls?

If I'm just doing soup at home for me, I'll warm it up in the pyrex bowl and eat it out of that. Saves washing up.

ohnothisagain · 26/10/2020 13:50

Half a tin, with extra veg.

woodlandwalker · 26/10/2020 13:50

My mother used to serve tinned soup as a starter at dinnertime regularly. We never had it as a lunch/light meal. I think the suggestion of half a can as a portion is a starter portion (or a small child's portion). For lunch, a whole can is right for most people.

MaverickDanger · 26/10/2020 13:51

Half a can with either a cheese toastie or two part baked petit pains.

PickAChew · 26/10/2020 13:52

I usually serve soup in these mugs, which are about 350ml and will make soup to fit them but if dh has a can, he will have a whole can in the standard Denby brown on the right. Excuse the crumbs. Haven't finished clearing up after lunch, yet.

Yes. With some bread though. And for lunch. We have our main meal in the evening.
