... do you have a whole can or just half?

I've just noticed that a serving is half a can - Surely that isn't enough? I've been over indulging in soup for years!

That looks like a mixing bowl not a normal sized soup bowl.

Do you think?
Perhaps the op was being funny.........

Get yourself a hand blender, not one of those expensive, size restricting specially made for soup ones. Then chuck in your favourite veg and chicken stock cubes. Cook until tender, take off the hob and put the stick blender in and you will have all the soup you want at a fraction of the price and with only the ingredients you want. You can put some in the freezer ready to pop into a saucepan any time you want.

Ignore the funny extra lines as the typing went wrong.

Agree on the stick blender!

SoupDragon · 27/10/2020 10:27

But do you freeze in whole tin can size or half?

Use an ice cube tray? Perfect portion control! Grin
WaxOnFeckOff · 27/10/2020 10:33

Ice cube tray, either an accident waiting to happen or genius, I mean, who doesn't love a cube of frozen scotch broth in their whisky?

Tomato soup in a bloody Mary might work well.

Mrsjayy · 27/10/2020 10:36

When I was weaning babies it was ice cube trays the. HV recommend I filled it once with puree what a bloody faff to get out.then heat up.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/10/2020 10:39

We did ice cubes of stewed fruit and added it to hot porridge. Cooled down the porridge and flavoured at the same time. Worked well and continued beyond toddler hood but stopped when they discovered jam and syrup at a hilton hotel breakfast buffet.

Mrsjayy · 27/10/2020 10:41

Well why didn't i think of that ! That's .a top tip Smile

Elizaaa · 27/10/2020 11:29

Thanks @KiposWonderbeasts, now I fancy beans on toast for dinner, but I was planning on a cheese toastie, as we bought a sandwich maker yesterday.

Maybe I'll have encona beans on toastie 🤤

KiposWonderbeasts · 27/10/2020 11:41

@Elizaaa, Encona is my hot sauce of choice.
DH prefers Cholula, DS sriracha, DD brown sauce. We’re very condiment-heavy.

myhobbyisouting · 27/10/2020 11:47

It's a tin

SoupDragon · 27/10/2020 12:03

@myhobbyisouting

It's a tin
Except when you have half a can.

Dammit now I NEED heinz tomato soup for lunch! And no I'm not even thinking about how much I'd have because I don't have any Sad

You know those pots of soup you get in the chiller section? They are bigger than a tin and are the perfect size for two lunch portions or a proper dinner portion. That's what I reuse and freeze my home made soups in.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2020 12:10

In the interests of linguistic fairness, I have checked my cupboard. Baxter's (who think a serving is a whole can) say can. Sainsbury's (who are total heathens about serving size) say half a can. Heinz (also half can heathens) say can. John West Tuna also say can.

So, clearly TeamTin are wrong. Or possibly American according to Chambers Dictionary.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/10/2020 12:18

Or this?

Is it a tin or a can?
Cans (or tin cans) come from the United States. Tins come from the UK. However, if cans are imported into the UK from the US, they become tins. Conversely, if a tin is imported into the US from the UK, it becomes a can.

What's the difference between a can and a tin? - English Language ...

Ninkanink · 27/10/2020 12:20

I think both are used here, from what I’ve seen/heard, even if tin is used more often colloquially which is why I switched to that.

Anyway. I’m trying to decide what my favourite tinned soup is.

I’m not keen on tomato soup, although it’s quite nice with added grated cheese and basil and a crusty roll on the side.

I think the last tinned soup I really enjoyed was leek and potato, although I also love a good carrot and coriander soup...

My favourite homemade soup is minestrone. We make it every month or so. But this winter I plan to make lots of new soups from scratch.

jessstan1 · 27/10/2020 12:21

A whole can.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2020 12:22

I think both are used here

Yes, I use both interchangeably TBH. Neither is actually wrong.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/10/2020 12:26

An investigation of my cupboards reveals that all refer to can except mackerel which doesn't mention either :(

Sheeplife · 27/10/2020 12:28

Whole can, I'd think someone was taking the piss if they gave me half or even less.

StanfordPines · 27/10/2020 12:50

Inspired by this thread we had soup for lunch. DH had bought a baguette for reasons best known to himself so we had the soup as a reason to eat much baguette and butter. So we had half a tin.

But I looked at the tin and see what it said!

StanfordPines · 27/10/2020 12:52

Forgot to add the picture.
