If you're having a can of soup...

... do you have a whole can or just half?

I've just noticed that a serving is half a can - Surely that isn't enough? I've been over indulging in soup for years!

I have a whole tin of Baxters lentil and bacon for a quick lunch sometimes, might have a slice of toast too if I fancy. No sugar, low salt I think. Sometimes open two tins of tomato soup for a quick Sunday tea to serve the four of us with cheese toasties. None of us are remotely fat or lazy and yes I make homemade soup every week.

WinnieMac · 26/10/2020 20:50

Eh?

Obviously not everyone who eats a whole tin of soup is a porker.

However, the replies to my comment have proved my point - namely that there is some kind of weird stigma attached to having a small appetite and being built in such a way that means you are tiny and don't eat that much.

Obviously I don't think that anyone who eats a tin of soup is a fatty. However, I do object to the idea that anyone who is tiny and would only eat half a tin of soup and nothing else, because they are half the size of their friends, is weird.

We are not weird. Neither are y ou.

Laufeythejust · 26/10/2020 20:51

I can honestly say I have never in my life eaten half a tin of soup! Clearly my previous unhealthy BMI could have been easily fixed by reducing my soup consumption. It would have saved me a fortune in PT costs! Although I still eat a full tin. Tonight with a sandwich so no doubt will wake up tomorrow obese Grin

shrill · 26/10/2020 20:55

@SoupDragon

You can't even fit a full can in a normal sized bowl!

you can.

Looks at my bowl....yes you can
WinnieMac · 26/10/2020 21:12

@Laufeythejust No, you won't wake up obese. But I'm guessing you're not a very small person overall.

WinnieMac · 26/10/2020 21:17

I see the "anti small person" brigade are still out and proud, btw.

Does nobody see that we are all different?

FWIW, my DC take after rugby-playing 6 foot 4 XH and are over 6 foot tall. They would think a whole tin of soup was a starter. They laugh at me for being so small that they can put my head under their arms.

Their calorific intake is evidently different from mine.

Why do small and slight people have the piss ripped out of them on MN? We are women, too.

StanfordPines · 26/10/2020 21:29

It’s not the small and slight women, it’s the competitive under eaters. Those that say that anyone who is over a size 6 sits there guzzling chips and white bread all day long.

NaughtipussMaximus · 26/10/2020 21:43

@jennie0412 Basically anything savoury will work! Chive and gruyere, tomato and Parmesan, herbs with a little lemon juice, garlic and parsley....

NaughtipussMaximus · 26/10/2020 21:44

I make them for us, I don’t sell them or anything. My husband reckons I could make a fortune at farmers markets but we have cats and I doubt anyone would appreciate the occasional cat hair included for free.

No one is against you having a smaller appetite... You literally said you thought people who ate the whole tin plus bread were greedy and probably overweight. That judgement is very clearly what people are objecting to Hmm To be clear, having a smaller appetite = ok Calling people who have a bigger appetite than you greedy = not ok
Laufeythejust · 26/10/2020 22:03

@WinnieMac out of interest what is your definition of ‘very small overall’?

Mistymonday · 26/10/2020 22:07

Whole tin of soup, whole tin of beans, nom. Half is not enough and I hate having half tins of things cluttering up the fridge.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/10/2020 22:09

I'm short and thin I'm not weird about food though.

WinnieMac · 26/10/2020 22:30

@PattyPan I was just responding to the piss-taking posts saying "I'd have a teaspoon of soup and that's it for the next month" (or similar). I was wondering why it's ok to be rude about people who don't eat much, and not ok to be rude about people who eat a lot.

In fact, I don't think that either should be derided. I was merely making a point, namely that it's ok to thin-shame, but it's not ok to fat-shame.

We are all different, and have differing appetities. The OP asked a resonable question, and people who only want half a tin of soup should be allowed to say to without people taking the piss.

@Laufeythejust My particular definition, based only on me, is 5 foot 1 and six stone, but very, very slightly built (the DC could get their hands round my wrists and ankles twice over - that kind of slightness).

MiddleClassMother · 26/10/2020 22:43

Whole can, they're low calorie and a half can wouldn't be filling enough. I don't have soup very often unless I make it myself as it's high in sugar.

PurpleDaisies · 26/10/2020 22:44

Someone who is 5ft1 and weighs 6 stone is very underweight with a BMI of 15.8. Those are very worrying numbers.

MiddleClassMother · 26/10/2020 22:52

Yes Winnie you do sound very underweight, have you seen your GP?

Feedingthebirds1 · 26/10/2020 22:53

I posted that when I'm hungry I just look at the can of soup in the cupboard and I'm full. It's not thin shaming, it's the legacy of Monty Python and the the Four Yorkshiremen sketch.

But for balance...

Just ONE can of soup? That wouldn't keep my pet ant going for a morning. I have 61 cans of soup, five loaves, two pounds of cheddar, a pound of butter and 92 packets of crisps for me elevenses.

Grin
PattyPan · 26/10/2020 22:54

@WinnieMac they were mocking the competitive/four Yorkshiremen element that usually appears on this type of thread, not the fact that different people have different appetites

MrsAvocet · 26/10/2020 22:58

PattyPan how would you class saying that someone who has a smaller appetite "must have a serious problem" then? Ok or not ok? I can't help noticing that there has been considerably more objection to WinnieMac's comment than to that one, or several other fairly snide posts obviously aimed at me, so is it really clear that having a smaller appetite =ok? Hmm
I actually care very little what anyone thinks about my eating habits - I just gave an honest answer to the OP's question - but there are clearly double standards at play here.

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 26/10/2020 23:08

@xoxogossipgirl2020

Why is nobody pointing out that it’s a tin, do people people call it a can of soup?!?! Where have I been all my life??!?!
They're still calling it a can!! It's a tin! (I'm up north if it makes a difference?) Always a full tin if I'm not having a bread roll with it.
anothergloriusmorning · 26/10/2020 23:17

Whole tin- but partly because if I had half the other half would likely end up in the bin. I guess half would be enough with some bread. Although even with a whole tin I don't find soup keeps me full for very long!

Slightly different but servings of cereal are pretty small too! I once weighed it out because DS went through a phase of eating loads.

WinnieMac · 26/10/2020 23:23

@MiddleClassMother

Oh goodness. I knew there'd be a pile-on about me being underweight. I vary a bit. I don't weigh myself. I just happened to be weighed by the GP recently, when I had a problem unrelated to weight.

The GP was not concerned about my weight. He obviously thought it was ok for someone of my height and very, very small build.

I also managed to give birth to three babies who weighed 10lb plus (as I did when I was a baby, as it happens).

We are all different.

The post by @Feedingthebirds1 made me laugh, though.

Feedingthebirds1 · 26/10/2020 23:27

For the uninitiated - The Four Yorkshiremen

ShortFatandDumpy · 26/10/2020 23:27

Depemdsif it's lunch only half a can. If its my main meal then a whole can.
I was rather surprised how few caloriesnthwre is in Heinz soup whenni looked the other day 98cals for half a can of Oxtail.
