... do you have a whole can or just half?

I've just noticed that a serving is half a can - Surely that isn't enough? I've been over indulging in soup for years!

In the SouthWest, always called it a can of soup.

My DC share a can, but I will have most of a can and throw the last bit if it's too much. When my partner is sharing with me, I like to throw a can of tomatoes in with it and whatever herbs I have lying about. It's then homemade Wink

Don't know the specifics of that poster but a bmi of 17 is far less healthy for most people than a bmi of 27. There is very little scope for underweight but healthy.

Is it though? I've seen GPs on a few occasions due to being far too thin and have always been given Fortisip or sent to the dietician. There is a difference between thin (or fat) shaming and genuine concern for health.

depends. on it's own usually a whole one.
if I make it a family meal I add a few (tinned) veg and garlic bread, then less than a tin per person will do.

OK just to go on a slight tangent - what about when you use soup as an ingredient for other things?

My small slow cooker is perfect for:

2 x chicken breasts
1 tin condensed mushroom soup
1 tub creme fraiche
4 sliced mushrooms
1 slice leek

Makes a great chicken and mushroom casserole for 1 and the other half makes a pie (just add a pastry top the freeze).

Should I be using half the amount? What do you do with a half tin once opened?

It doesn't matter how much of a tincan of soup someone eats or what they eat it with. If they're enjoying it then why the heck not.
It doesn't matter either if someone looks like a spacehopper on legs or a twiglet with tits.
If someone had a whole tincan of soup with half a loaf of bread followed by a roast dinner and a trifle for afters then can understand an eyebrow or two being raised.
The only time I leave some of my soup is when the dog is giving me the side eye and licking his chops.

But you're using the whole can so I don't understand your question.

The can makes one dish for several people, or if it's just you, the casserole and then the pie, which can be frozen or eaten within the next couple of days.

Why would you make it more difficult for yourself by only using half the can? You'd have to then remember to use the soup up, and also cook again the next day, because you'd only made one meal the day before.

I always used to have a whole can. I still do. But I notice at friends' houses they all keep half for another day! However, I am very greedy.

Glutton. I don't even lick the lid, I just sniff vigorously as I open the can. Mmm soup fragrance. Fills me up for at least six hours.

In this completely theoretical (and clearly wrong) situation, I would decant it. I also think I leaving food in the tin can is bad food management although I am not entirely sure why.

Stuff from the tin is supposed to leach into the food.

I do it occasionally though, but I rarely put half a tin of anything in the fridge.

I think it's something to do with the air and the acid in the food reacting with the tin but that's dragged from school lessons 40 years ago. I always decant anything half used. Never soup though...

Half used tins for me are usually corn, beans or tinned fruit. DS doesn't eat veg so mealtimes usually have 2 or 3 portions of fruit, by the end of the week, fresh is usually supplemented with tinned pineapple or apricots etc.

Full tin of soup.

On my own, one piece of bread and full tin of beans mixed with hot sauce.
With DH, two pieces of toast each and half a tin of beans. Often grated cheese.

That looks like a mixing bowl not a normal sized soup bowl. Some Baxter’s soups are one serving per can. If it’s Heinz I stick to portion sizes, half a can per serving. Nothing to do with “competitive undereating” (a sneery phrase that’s very unkind) everything to do with not wanting to wreck my kidneys and pancreas from the ridiculous amounts of salt and sugar in a can of soup. And I’d have it with a slice of bread or garlic bread.
