(Socially distanced of course and in strictest obedience of all localised lockdowns and 3 or 5 tiers and whatever illogic the powers that be can dream up next)

@PinkSparklyPussyCat - the desk will be a good investment. If it helps, dh is on his 2nd home office chair and new desk since lockdown, and as when our work to the loft finishes, he'll have a home office room, is planning out a new built in desk... however, he always worked from home one or two days a month and has been told it suits his company better to have them working remotely, so this is probably how irs going to be for another year, even if covid disappears overnight.

Also once you've finished with it, would the desk be good for dcs homework? No having to clear the dining table of homework at the weekend for meals?

DrDiva · 28/10/2020 07:45

Wow you lot are chatty! I can’t keep up!! Grin

Well it’s probably been longer Coming than for most, but DH developed a raging temp last night so I’d off for a test today - our first! I guess it’s good that it’s half term and we had nothing planned for the next couple of days, and I can easily work from home for the rest of the week.

Still annoyed though. I was quite looking forward to going to work and shutting myself away in the office for some peace and quiet. Whoever said further up the thread about never getting to be home alone, YES in spades! I get very grumpy without some time just to get stuff done without the constant “Muuuuuum” chorus.

Still no Nottinghamshire details...

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/10/2020 07:55

@DisgruntledGuineaPig I'd be happier about it if I had a home office so I could shut the door, I'd feel as though I had a proper set up. I'm still using a dining room chair as I don't have room for an office chair as well, and we had new flooring this year so I don't want to ruin it!

No DCs so unless we move I'll have no use for it if we go back full time.

They're actually going to pay for the desk so it's a company asset so if they do get us back full time I hope they've got somewhere to store it! (Not that I know how to get it to them, I don't think it'll fit in my MX5!)

I'm hoping we get the option to either work remotely or in the the office. We want to move away but I'm worried about giving up my job and not getting another. If they let me work remotely we'd be off as soon as possible but from what's been said I don't think it's likely.

Morning all. Another day in hell. Seems never ending today. Haloween Sad

Is Nottingham meant to be in Tier 3 today?

Morning all.

mightbealittlebitmad · 28/10/2020 08:03

I'm a bit worried about a potential move to tier 2. That means I'll no longer be able to meet my friends in a pub or cafe unless we sit outside and freeze and they are technically banned from being in my house. I'm concerned about my job in a pub, we are very quiet at the minute as it is without banning people from meeting their friends/family, once that comes into place then things will be so much worse and I potentially might not get any hours. No idea how we can pay the bills without my wage.

It's having a huge impact on my mood, I just don't see the point anymore. People think I'm lucky to have a husband and kids to live with but when things are tough between us and I have no escape things will just get even worse.

IheartNiles · 28/10/2020 08:13

Morning. BBC dementoring away about SAGE (you know, the group of self interest driven Covid vulnerable middle aged men in safe jobs) demanding nationwide lockdown for months.

The you’ve got a thread on here with a woman too terrified to send her kids to school because of what sounds like extreme health anxiety.

Then dozens of other threads demanding endless lockdown, villagers policing rule breakers and so on.

Think I might need a break from this site, the people on here are far removed from the people I know in real life who are sick of the whole charade and ready to protest. Maybe because chat sites attract a high proportion of loners/middle class SAHM/preppers?

I understand.

I’m in tier 2, sorry to say the difference in pubs and restaurants when it hit was quite noticeable. I heard this from family; I don’t go to pubs etc because of T&T.

I’m meeting a friend for a lunchtime walk, the weather will be shit but we’re stuck with this for a while. I’m not going to meet people outside when it’s really freezing so I’m hoping for a mild winter.

DominaShantotto · 28/10/2020 08:33

Yep Nottingham and selected parts of the Shire are meant to hit Tier 3 at midnight - apparently one council published details of our specific rules (they seem to have pushed for harder than anywhere else from leaks) at 7.30 last night and were told to take it down 20 minutes later as they're resuming talks this morning with a view to extending the area in Tier 3... so theoretically all those pubs in what they thought were staying in Tier 2 areas could literally be fucked over overnight.

There is no end to how appallingly they'll treat people.

AcornAutumn · 28/10/2020 08:36

Something else about Tier 2

It’s the anniversary of my dads’s passing this week. A couple of mutual friends asked to go to mum’s with food etc. They are in their 80s and genuinely didn’t know that they weren’t allowed.

It’s all right, I have to do care visits so she won’t be alone, but it was interesting that they didn’t know.

Reedwarbler · 28/10/2020 08:38

That's an interesting point by @IheartNiles about people on here being so far removed from people you know. I have not met a single person who is in favour of the lunacy that is so often proposed and looked forward to by some posters on here. Everyone I know, without exception, thinks the whole thing is totally crazy, ill thought out, etc. By the same token, they are abiding by all the rules and taking care of themselves and their families, but now it is all done with added resentment.
So who are these fanatics on mumsnet? I really do think a lot of them are not genuine.

Oh, I see, so midnight tomorrow?

It really is appalling how they will treat people.

Part of the problem is that SAGE themselves said how amazed they were by the compliance, so I know I think there’s a drive to see how far government can control.

I don’t know if this is true but I read that Susan Michie, Communist and purveyor of “zero Covid, lockdown forever” actually inherited millions from her mother.

Pennypie · 28/10/2020 08:44

Apologies if this has already been covered, I have been avoiding a lot of online forums over the last few days as this is all getting me down so much.

But why are the covid deaths, which were around 45k a day or so ago, suddenly today being reported in the media, as currently around 60k?

When I look at the official dashboard, it is now reporting two death numbers: "within 28 days of positive test", and a separate, higher "with COVID-19 on the death certificate".

Deaths within 28 days of positive test:
Total: 45,365

Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate Total: 58,925

When did they suddenly start using this second (much higher) number, and why?

110APiccadilly · 28/10/2020 08:46

I know a few people who are in favour of extended lockdowns. Oddly enough they work in very secure jobs where they can work from home, and were able to have paid time off for childcare in March. (Not that dissimilar to the members of Sage, I suppose.)

Yup and the demographic on here is similar.
Aztectrousers · 28/10/2020 08:50

I agree ladies. Nobody I talk to in real life agrees with what’s going on, although they are following guideline mostly, and there is just such a feeling of apathy about it now.

If they started publishing daily death rates from all causes then I think things would be put into perspective.

AcornAutumn · 28/10/2020 08:53

Penny pie “ Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate Total: 58,925

When did they suddenly start using this second (much higher) number, and why?”

Why, is to ramp up fear.

Sir Patrick Vallance said in an early press conference that many people will have Covid on their death certificate but haven’t been tested. So they may have died of pneumonia with covid not present. When we weren’t testing, we didn’t know.

There was a kerfuffle about over counting earlier in the year but of course now it suits them to pick the higher number.

I’m also not convinced by deaths with 28 days of a test. The cause of death will be listed as Covid either for primary or secondary.

Don’t forget, the rules on signing of death certificates have changed to allow for more flex to put Covid.

Evenstar · 28/10/2020 08:54

Every day seems the same really, it doesn’t seem worth going anywhere now isolation means literally not leaving the house, as the only bright spot most days is taking my dogs for a walk. I can’t wear a mask so unless I really need something I don’t feel like running the risk of coming across people who think they are the mask police.

I used to think Groundhog Day was a funny film. Our council wants us to move into Tier 2 now ☹️. Sorry to be depressing.

IwishIwasyoda · 28/10/2020 08:57

Morning everyone. It's finally stopped raining here which is something to be cheerful about.

110APiccadilly · 28/10/2020 08:59

@Pennypie There are two (well, actually three) sets of deaths data.

There is the "quick and dirty" method used by PHE to get daily deaths figures out. This involves a reasonably straightforward piece of data matching where you just mark anyone who has died after testing positive for Covid within the last 28 days as a Covid death. (I think it doesn't include deaths at home, but don't quote me on that.) (There's also a series available for deaths where there was a positive Covid test within the last 60 days.) This will pick up most Covid deaths, but not all, and will also pick up some non-Covid deaths. This is, I think, where the first number comes from.

Then there is the method used by the ONS which involves looking at actual deaths certificates. Assuming the certificates are accurate, this is a much better method. However, there's a lag of about 2 weeks because obviously they can't do this until death certificates are filed. This is, I think, where the second number comes from.

Although I did see somewhere (Guardian, maybe?) who had taken the ONS data and then added the last two weeks' worth of the previous data to try and bring it up to date. In my opinion, that's not a valid way to treat the data.

110APiccadilly · 28/10/2020 09:01

"... added the last two weeks' worth of the PHE data..." that should say.

Same here. Most people are very concerned about the economy and are eye rolling at all the rules. And I know a lot of people in safe jobs at home.

The elderly I know are saying there is no way they are staying home again and will take their chances as they want to live.

Flowers. I empathise entirely. We all just need to keep on keeping on. And I know the not complying with masking is really hard. Tell you what though, we can be brave together.

Read a reply to zealots that made sense to me which was 'well, if I wear a mask against medical advice, I may be hospitalised and put pressure on the NHS, and you wouldn't want that, would you?'

Looking at @MercyBooth 's link above (and copied here)
Christmas Day Police David Jamieson, the West Midlands police and crime commissioner is uncannily like Inspector Morse to look at. I bet some people do a double take when they see him.
