Does your washing machine go on on a weekly basis??
I'm a single mum to a two year old and it's been on 6 times this week already!
Dread to think how many times it'd be on if I had a husband too!

Family of 3. At least onc wash a day but can be 3. On average I probably do about 9 full washes a week.

Angelina82 · 20/10/2020 05:58

Are you like my sister who bungs the machine on when it’s barely half full or like me (family of 3 adults) who has it rammed full every day though OP?

You all do a lot more than me! Every other day? 2 x bedding washes at the weekend. That's it!

Oblomov20 · 20/10/2020 07:17

I kind of embarrassed. Dh and both my ds's only wear 2 x pairs of work/school trousers per week. Plus school shirts, every day. Plus boxers and socks, every day. That's only 2 loads a week. No school jumpers. Just a blazer for ds's.

Clearly the rest of MN wears and washes a whole school uniform every day!

Two adults and two teens, out washing machine would be one once a day but never more than that.
If you have your machine on two or three times a day are you only putting a few items in or are thry full washes? I don't think I own enough clothes to put a wash on three times a day lol

terriblyangryattimes · 20/10/2020 08:03

Family of four though both parents working from home so we get into 'comfies' when the school run is done. 2 kids in primary.
Machine is on 5x a week. Would be four if my husband didn't run so much but his gear needs washing same day. Its a 9kg machine though.

WomenAndVulvas · 20/10/2020 08:11

7 kg washing machine, 2 adults, 2 young DC
I do a maximum of 5 loads a week.
I squeeze the towels and the bedding in together separated by colour, so one load of whites and one dark.

Apart from socks and underwear, most things are worn at least twice (unless sweaty or stained).

zafferana · 20/10/2020 08:13

Those who are in double figures (health reasons and things like having to wash work uniforms not withstanding) is everything you are washing genuinely dirty or do you just put things in the wash after wearing for a short time regardless?

I wash all our bedding every week. I can see from many of these responses that others don't. We are also a family who does a lot of sport. I run 3 x a week and do a class, so lots of sweating running stuff, DS1 does swimming, basketball and rugby x 3 (one for the local club which has a different kit from school), DS2 does PE, football x 2 and rugby x 1 (again, for our local club). So yeah, I have a 9kg machine and I do 10 loads a week.

WomenAndVulvas · 20/10/2020 08:15

we are a family of 4 and have our washer on several times a day, every fucking day!
Surely the machine is always half empty?

CherryPavlova · 20/10/2020 08:16

Twice a day usually, but we don’t do bedding at home.

To be fair, a lot of schools have suggested that you should now wash all uniform daily, and that might well be practical at primary school level, but no one wants to wash a blazer every day.

Your level of washing is what pretty much everyone I know does. Actually I would say most only have 1 pairs of trousers/skirt a week (well 5 days). That's perfectly hygienic.

In some families it seems to be the norm to not only wash the uniform every day, but change when home from school and to wash the set of clothes worn at home every day as well. If you're washing 2 whole outfits per child each day, I can see how the volume of washing ramps up.

I'm not going to go on about environmental concerns re masses of washing, but I do think it's really good practice to make sure that something is actually dirty before you wash it! Worn once for a couple of hours, or a towel used once is most likely not dirty, you are just dumping it in the washing basket out of habit.

toria658 · 20/10/2020 08:25

2 adults, 2 dogs, 6 washes a week.

1 dog wash
2 bedding washes ( two queen beds to change)
3 clothes washes

For context DH now has a disability which causes extra washing.

Stompythedinosaur · 20/10/2020 08:28

At least 6 times a week here.

AlwaysLatte · 20/10/2020 08:38

Although I do a lot, some of the loads are only half full as I always do whites on their own, I love really white washing and use the whitener in with it. I don't use conditioner for towels so they go on their own as well, as do dark colours.

What about bedding and towels? You can't only be washing clothes every week
Giganticshark · 20/10/2020 08:47

I do have a smart machine so weighs it then changes the time and water amount accordingly. But I do tend to fill the 9kg drum. Several times a day. Ahh

mysticpistachio · 20/10/2020 08:54

Family of 7. The bastard thing is on ALL THE TIME. honestly I would say 3 washes a day.

Depends if your kids do a lot of sport as that adds to it.

EnglishRain · 20/10/2020 08:59

A scary amount. Just myself, DH and our 3 month old. We go through a lot of baby clothes and muslins..! And we use reusable nappies. Must be at least 15 times a week. Maybe 20 😨

WomenAndVulvas · 20/10/2020 09:53

I agree with this. I find these threads really interesting because people seem to make so much work for themselves. I really couldn't be arsed to do three loads a day, quite apart from the fact that I haven't got time. And I shudder to think of all the money that literally goes down the drain!

FallonsTeaRoom · 20/10/2020 09:59

Bedding weekly, towel wash weekly, (hand towels changed daily, bath towels changed twice weekly) plus clothes so machine is on probably 4 times a week.
2 adults.

My children are young and as much as I try to reuse school uniform, it usually is dirty every day. It’s a very outdoorsy school and uniform is often muddy. We’re all quite active and I can’t bring myself to reuse sweaty exercise clothes.
If something is clean I won’t wash it. However we have around 10 loads a week of genuinely dirty clothes. Maybe I should tell my children to stop messing around in mud!

RedskyAtnight · 20/10/2020 10:56

And that's totally fine and understandable. But lots of people don't go to outdoorsy schools (or they have DC that prefer more sedentary activities) and , other than (say) a bit of yogurt that could be sponged off their jumper, their uniform is totally fine the next day. Also, plenty of people can't afford enough uniform to have a clean set every day - and I've never noticed their DC looking particularly grubby (and if you have a DC who attracts dirt, they are likely to look normal grubby after about 5 seconds anyway).

Same as the DC who do sports - if you've got a 12 year old playing rugby who comes back covered in mud from head to toe, then obviously that needs to go in the wash. However if it's a 6 year old in a 30 minute dance class, I doubt their dance clothes really are dirty after one session.

kittykat35 · 20/10/2020 11:55

I agree I think it's crazy to put on a new uniform every day!! And my dc attract dirt, my dd looks like she had a bust up with her yogurt every day! But all I do is boil the kettle and wipe off the bad stains...they come of just fine!! If my dc manage a day with a t shirt, jumper or leggings staying majorly stain free then it's put in the wear again box in the wardrobe (they know what it is for!) they use the clothes from that first before getting new ones! Unless they have to wear something else for a specific occasion.
