Don't want to watch 'Friends' with DD. Any ideas?

DD (9) wants to watch this with me. A couple of her school friends watch it with their mums. I loved Friends and watched it and ER with mum every week. But I was mid teens! We watched a couple of episodes but I felt it was very dated and I didn't enjoy it. Any ideas for a more modern, slightly grown up series for us to watch? We have Netflix and free view. TIA

Modern Family

One Tree Hill - I would have been around her age when it came out. Really good tv show similar to The OC

Your 9 year old wants to bond with you and have something to talk to her friends about.

Suck it up sister.

Poor kid

Aww bless her she is only 9. Can you not just watch it with her? The benefit in this far outweighs your 'I don't want to'

AnotherEmma · 19/10/2020 00:03

Big Bang Theory?

Friends is dated now and very questionable from a feminist POV!

SylvanianFrenemies · 19/10/2020 00:04

Friends is full of porn and sexual references, I'm guessing that's why you dont want to? I'm far from a prude but there's zero chance of me watching it with my 9yo either! If others think episodes about free porn, sex with strippers, thinking about your parents during sex etc are the stuff for 9yos I'm clearly getting too old...

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 19/10/2020 00:04

Gilmore Girls

Viviennemary · 19/10/2020 00:05

Just watch it again if she's asked you to.

Occitane · 19/10/2020 00:12

The Middle

TheGirlWithAPrince · 19/10/2020 00:13

Another one for Gilmore girls

ColleagueFromMars · 19/10/2020 00:14

I hear modern family is the up to date version of friends, so maybe that? Or Outnumbered?

BowowMttt · 19/10/2020 00:20

I also think you should watch it with her. Then she’s got something to talk about with you and her friends. Since you used to enjoy it it’s no hardship to watch it again surely?

decoraters · 19/10/2020 00:20

Friends is full of porn and sexual references, I'm guessing that's why you dont want to?

I never really thought of that. I presume though if that were OP reason they would have said so, rather then saying they don't want to be she it's dated and they didn't enjoy it .

NiceGerbil · 19/10/2020 00:21

Friends is really iffy when you watch it now!

Buffy? Grin

MJMG2015 · 19/10/2020 00:35

The iffy stuff just tends to go over their heads

She wants to chat about it with her friends. Surely it's not so bad you can't watch it again?!

We've been watching g a lot of old stuff like faulty towers & vicar of Dibley. It's lovely to see the kids enjoying them fir the first time.

Chloemol · 19/10/2020 00:59

Poor kid, she wants to do something with you, something her friends also do, so she can bond with you and them

But because you think it’s dated you don’t want to do it,

Suck it up, and be nice to your daughter,

MrsFezziwig · 19/10/2020 01:20

Am I really behind the times to think The Big Bang Theory would be totally unsuitable for a 9 year old?

On the other hand, Young Sheldon would be perfect!

Mistymonday · 19/10/2020 01:22

Gilmore Girls

Oncemorewithfeelin · 19/10/2020 01:25

Modern family
Buffy
Full house
Fuller house.

Dillydallyingthrough · 19/10/2020 01:25

I would say just watch it, I have watched hours and hours of stuff with DD that I cant stand. It's a nice bonding experience and for me and DD tends to open up conversations on all kinds of random things! Surely this is part of being a parent, I'm sure you must have watched crap kids TV when she was younger? This is very similar....

AnneOfTeenFables · 19/10/2020 01:30

It's easy to skip the unsuitable episodes. I agree with PP your DD wants to be able to chat with her friends and to replicate what they have with their mums - a different series won't cut it.

Zhx3 · 19/10/2020 01:30

My dc all loved The Vicar of Dibley!

ArizonaRobbins · 19/10/2020 01:37

Hm I have to watch my little pony with my six year old. Count your blessings!

grandmasterstitch · 19/10/2020 03:00

I love friends but think it's inappropriate for a 9 year old. There's an awful lot of sex references. Modern family is a good alternative

BusterGonad · 19/10/2020 03:09

There's a reason she wants to watch Friends, surely you can put yourself through it for the sake of your daughter?
