Don't want to watch 'Friends' with DD. Any ideas?

DD (9) wants to watch this with me. A couple of her school friends watch it with their mums. I loved Friends and watched it and ER with mum every week. But I was mid teens! We watched a couple of episodes but I felt it was very dated and I didn't enjoy it. Any ideas for a more modern, slightly grown up series for us to watch? We have Netflix and free view. TIA

Gilmore girls (Netflix)

Haven’t rtft so maybe it’s been said already. My dc often want to watch things that I don’t think are suitable and I’m very direct with them about why. But I will talk with them about funny episodes and show them clips to give them something to talk about with their friends. I wouldn’t be watching friends with a 9 year old.

Ghosts on BBC iPlayer is fun.

I'm watching it with DS (11)and we're really enjoying it but they do talk about sex all the time! Modern Family (as others have said above) is brilliant and much more wholesome.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 19/10/2020 11:19

I’m surprised at the resounding chorus of ‘Gilmore Girls’ tbh. The earlier series might be ok but when you get into the whole Rory/Dean thing and then cheating on his wife bit I’d say it wasn’t particularly suitable for a 9 year old

LagneyandCasey · 19/10/2020 11:25

Another vote for The Middle. Dd must gave been about 8/9 when we first started watching it and still loves it at 14.

Young Sheldon is really good too.

Notonthestairs · 19/10/2020 11:26

Midnightstar - yes Heartland is a mammoth series, I think I might have finished it by the end of the year (which will prove once and for all that I watch too much telly Grin)

catsoup · 19/10/2020 11:44

Malcolm in the middle is starting today I think on 4 music channel. The mum used to scare me but now I think she's the best one in it 😂

Yep, it's just restarted again today. We've just watched all of it, and it's just brilliant.

I'm not terribly strict about age limits with my dc, but I'd definitely say Friends is unsuitable for a 9yo. And Buffy, though I'm a big fan, definitely is unsuitable!

Hohohole · 19/10/2020 13:45

The Gilmore girls.

mopphead · 19/10/2020 14:29

@midnightstar66 @Notonthestairs
I'm only on series two of Heartland but I am comforted by the fact that it won't run out aaaaaany time soon! Hate it when you get really into something and it ends after a couple of seasons!

midnightstar66 · 19/10/2020 14:34

@mopphead yes it's quite a large responsibility. I think we're on season 10 now but there was some serious binging over lockdown haha. I'm not sure where we'd have been in normal times of school and work 😆

mocha78 · 19/10/2020 14:47

If it’s still on Amazon Prime, I enjoyed watching Kicks with my daughter when she was 9, it's just one season about a girls’ High School football team-friendship, family, sports and a little romance if I remember but nothing unsuitable.

AzraiL · 19/10/2020 15:03

The Goldbergs. It's like if The wonder Years had been funnier and set in the 80's. We all love watching it.

Ihatesandwiches · 19/10/2020 16:13

Hi everyone. I've really enjoyed reading all your responses and it's great to hear such a variety of opinions. DD and I have a great bond. I'm a single mum and she is an only child. We do LOTS together. She is popular at school and she and her friends are never short of conversation! The more comments I read on this thread, the more I actively don't want to watch Friends with her as she would be one girl talking about it, if you see what I mean, sorry Friends lovers!

Schitt's Creek

UserABCDE12345 · 19/10/2020 16:18

Friends are classified as 12, why is everyone saying she should watch it with her 9 year old? My 9 year old has asked. I said no. I watch it with my 12 year old (and yes I cringe).

As for Buffy, seriously? Much more sex in that. Friends makes reference to it with the odd shot of someone clearly clothed and in bed. Buffy shagging Angel or Spike is not appropriate for a 9 year old.

Lydia777 · 19/10/2020 16:21

No one has mentioned Dawson's Creek?!

It is coming to Netflix-I adored it at that age. She will probably love it, you will probably want to murder every annoying character!! (grin)

OohKittens · 19/10/2020 16:24

My daughter is 10 and I won't allow her to watch friends, it's completely inappropriate for children as far as I'm concerned. Mine is obsessed with only fools and horses though.

Krankie · 19/10/2020 16:56

Think you could argue there’s inappropriate content in a lot of the series being mentioned!

Friends was out when I was in a primary school, I remember the theme tune being played at my leavers disco (when I was 10) and everyone going mad for it. Changed days eh.

Anything inappropriate stayed well over my head until I watched it all again later. I loved it and still do, maybe a generational thing though. Probably quite outdated now, but there are good lessons to be learned from it too (none of the women had conventional pregnancies for example).

Think it depends on the child really, inappropriate content is everywhere now. Doubt watching Friends would cause damage.

ScrambledSmegs · 19/10/2020 17:01

I know some people who watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine with their Year 6 kids. I haven't watched it apart from the first episode as it's just not my kind of humour but they claim it's mostly pretty harmless. Might be worth a look?

hauntedvagina · 19/10/2020 17:52

Modern Family
Malcolm in the Middle
The Simpsons

I've watched all of these with an 8 year old and he loved it.

hellswelshy · 19/10/2020 18:09

Young Sheldon is great, agree Modern Family too!
