Do you have an unfortunate name? Or know someone else that does?

It's been drawn to my attention by DH this week, that because of my habit of trailing the end of the word away to a squiggle when I'm signing my name, I've been signing everything as TWat_ for quite a while. He found this hilarious.

And I can't even blame him for his unfortunate surname beginning as I was another name beginning with Wat...before I married.

My mum was a midwife and a babygirl with the surname Coustard was
named Jelian.
I met an Adrian Mole who would have been a teenager when the books were famous. A colleague who remarked on it got short shrift.

Over the years I've known: Bill Williams, Richard Cox, John Thomas, and Lori Driver.
There's also the lady who married a distant cousin. Her name is Robin. His (and consequently her) surname is Robbins.

I've come across a Christian Wank in a US business.... I can't even begin to think how anyone could do that to a child. But maybe wank isn't American slang like it is here...but surely he knows!

I only know one person with an unfortunate name but I was surprised to find out that they chose it themselves!! Ie they chose to go with their unfortunate second name rather than her very conventional first name.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 10/10/2020 20:53

I know a Mrs Carole carol. I used to work with a guy called Jestar. The worst I have seen was a thread on Mumsnet where a girl from a different country picked an “british” name when she moved here - Fanny Pong Grin

I once had to call and offer a job to someone called Holden Maboobie. I'm afraid when they answered I did ask: "Are you Holden Maboobie?"

I had a client called Mr Muff - I had to shout his name in a crowded waiting room and I had to dig my nails into my palms to stop me giggling 🤭

Nymeriastark1 · 10/10/2020 21:39

A kid in my school was called Peter Peters.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 10/10/2020 21:58

I've taught a William Williams. And went to school with a Robert Roberts. Unimaginative.

Teacher at my dd's school is Richard Head.

A student teacher was called Grocock (stressed that the first o was a short sound, not a long o) whereas DD had a teacher called Cox.

My favourite was my friend telling me that they couldn't use the Welsh name they wanted for their DD as they wanted to call her Haf (Welsh for Summer) but with the surname Price they couldn't.

I know two teenage sisters, Beau and Lexi.
Shorten them and say them together and you've almost got a pair of bollocks.

hazelnutlatte · 10/10/2020 22:29

I was at uni with an S Lapper.
Got loads of funny names from when I worked at a call centre - one memorable day I had to call Dr Death followed by Dr Pepper!
