Teachers know what's happening but can't tell us

As members of the elite teachers are automatically told things by the government and instructed not to tell us little, marginalised folk.

They probably have secret briefings. Either that or elite champagne cocktail parties where they network with each other and exchange information about what the next lockdown rules will be.

The only reason ordinary people don't know exactly what is going to happen with lockdown rules tomorrow, next week, next month is that we are considered too lowly to be told.

I'm going to keep on starting threads until someone spills the beans and admits that they know there's going to be an October lock down.

@Firefin

No, you have got that wrong. School children are the elite. I have had numerous students tell me we will have another national lockdown around half-term, total news to me. So they get it first. Probably from the fairies working for the government.
Haha Mine are the opposite. Yesterday I was asked if we are going into lockdown again. I said how would I know?! I havent even been told what time youre getting released from school today!

What a load of crap! I'm a nanny for a teacher who has 3 kids, she knows nothing and is on edge waiting to hear what she's meant to do with no notice, I only cover for her at some hours and can't do full time...
Ridiculous comment!

Year 10. Staggered end of day release, with no definite time to aim for is stressing me out more than not knowing what the government will do next

Parent Governor here, during the last lockdown schools were told everything at the last minute, sometimes a matter of hour before they had to execute very complex plans, and DfE guidance often changed daily. So frankly the idea of a 'teaching elite' beavering away in secret is utter bollox...ffs....

Badabingbadabum · 09/10/2020 06:50

Ooooh, I know, I know! But OP you're clearly not that clued up or you know that we'we've switched from cocktails to pumpkin lattes served in hollowed out pumpkins. We know it is basic but we are the elite, we can do what we like frankly.

Bentoforthehorde · 09/10/2020 06:59

Well this was a fun read.
Going to have to up my game on the end of year gifts now I know the underpaid/overworked stressed teacher thing is a facade. A bottle of gin probably won't cut it this year 🤔

SionnachRua · 09/10/2020 07:04

This is clearly reeling in a whole lot of people who won't read past first post. Great work Op! See you at the top secret cabal meeting later!

StealthPolarBear · 09/10/2020 07:06

Glad to find out it's not only my dcs' school that are doing staggered end times (fine) but changing them randomly day by day (not fine!)

Shangrilaa · 09/10/2020 07:07

Genuinely worried that people didn’t realise this was a joke!

Lolaloveslemonade · 09/10/2020 07:12

Haha! I’m ALWAYS the last to know anything in my school.
It’s a conspiracy I tell you.

Wimbledon11 · 09/10/2020 07:15

Don't talk rubbish

PhoneAddict · 09/10/2020 07:34

Am I being dense? Are the "You're talking rubbish OP" replies that appear to spectacularly miss the joke, actually joke responses themselves? Double satire??

Lolaloveslemonade · 09/10/2020 07:49

I do think (hope) that people are replying to the OP with their own joke Phone.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 09/10/2020 07:51

This post has made clear how many people are gagging for the chance to have a go at teachers. No surprise there, it's been happening for a while.

nosswith · 09/10/2020 07:54

There is one flaw in the OPs argument above all others- the assumption that the government knows what to do and has agreed amongst themselves.

And I cannot see the man who runs the country (Dominic Cummings) drinking champagne or being at a cocktail party.

Suzi888 · 09/10/2020 07:56

@OhToBeASeahorse

OP we've kept that secret for fucking years until you rocked up tonight. Cheers.
@OhToBeASeahorse 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nomnomarrgh · 09/10/2020 11:35

Ooh ooh. I’ve got it. The teachers are secretly tiered. There are the ones who go to secret champagne hobnobbing sessions who are given advance notice. Then there are the other teachers who don’t. But the ones who do know have to pretend not to, as they are top secret, like the masons.

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/10/2020 11:41

I think all this sarcasm isn’t helping the Stop teacher bashing cause...IMO.!

EvaHoffman · 09/10/2020 22:49

Just to be really clear. My original post was a joke, it was sarcastic! Sorry if it wasn't actually funny for those reading it. But that was my intention.

To be really clear I was fed up with people constantly posting to ask teachers if a lockdown was imminent as if teachers had some secret info. That really, really bothers me because it signifies to me that there is some weird residual belief that teachers are privileged or elite.

For decades now teachers have been trying to convey to people that although there is a Victorian belief that teachers are paid well for doing very little, in fact we are bottom of the heap.

I would like to extend this rant say that I am not a school teacher. I work in further education. I would like to share the following facts with you. I have tried sharing them before, only to be told I am lying or exaggerating. However, it's the truth.

  1. In further education colleges we have had a 30 percent cut in funding. Far, far more than every other education sector
  2. In our department there has been no reduction in students but we have gone from having 8 managers to ONE manager
  3. Every term for the last 5 years or so I have asked colleagues that work out their actual hourly pay. It averages about £7 per hour. All of us are graduates with post graduate certificates or diplomas. I have in addition an MA and a doctorate (PhD) I earn £7 per hour. Have a little think about that
  4. In my college FIVE people have died of covid since March. Not one of them over the age of 55. Four of them no underlying conditions at all.

So. Let that sink in. People with degrees, post graduate diplomas are working for £7 per hour with a high risk of death. On top of that they are not 'heroes' no PPE, very low pay, but invisible.

Next time you are tempted to think teachers as privileged please stop and think. School teachers have huge responsibilities and are not paid much. I have taught in both schools and universities. In comparison, teaching in further education is far, far, far harder. Lower paid and much more risky in terms of catching covid.

Is there anybody out there with a post graduate degree, 15 years experience and working for £7 per hour with a high risk of covid?

Spare a thought for us privileged teachers.

I know that nobody wants to hear this. For most people, teachers are rich and privileged and on top of that very few people understand what further education is. Well FE trains people to understand IT, work in construction, be carpenters and electricians, cut hair, improve everybody's numeracy and literacy skills and countless other essential things vitally needed in our economy.

I wonder if you know that people working my in this field with post graduate degrees earn £7 per hour and have a high risk of dying of covid?
