ADs crave hotel breakfasts garnished with phallic strawberries

Oh for the good old days of a breakfast buffet.

Back when you could make plans and reasonably expect them to happen. When you could turn up spontaneously and browse or linger at your leisure. When you could meet whoever you like and give them a hug

But until those days return, here's some more AD chat about life, the universe and phallic fruits...

And there we have it: per the Sunday Times, Cineworld is drawing up plans to close all of its UK sites this coming week. Around 5,500 staff facing redundancy.

TheOrchidKiller · 04/10/2020 00:41

@helenadove
I don't know how you stick it out on Twitter.
"people literally perform brain surgery wearing them"
I should bloody well hope someone performing brain surgery, literally or actually, is wearing a mask if they're rummaging around in there!

It's the sheer lack of imagination to imagine anything other than their own circimstances.

Exactly this.

That's very sad about the cinemas. What on earth are we doing?

Slowly circling round as we go diwn the plug hole😠

Ibake · 04/10/2020 07:40

This is a lovely story, although many families would struggle to provide the level of care needed.
'We sprang Grandma from the care home' www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-54366336

I read a sentence this morning that I felt summed up many people on the corona boards, and why arguing with them is so utterly pointless.

"Selective empathy is the sign of an emotional manipulator"

Bollss · 04/10/2020 08:17

That's sad about Cineworld.

The tiny independent cinema near us has tried to open but they're not releasing anything and they couldn't balance the books on old films alone. I do think though if they asked for donations a lot would give including me because I love it. I'd be very sad to see it to. Cineworld won't get that though.

Pleasedontdothat · 04/10/2020 08:33

Checking in ... I’ve been nursing my poor dog who’s just had surgery after a freak accident. Poor little thing is feeling very sorry for himself and I feel like my final nerves have been shredded ...

Dh threw in the towel this week and applied for a business loan this week - it’s the only support he’s entitled to and with the cancellation of his latest project he has officially run out of money. The loan came through ridiculously quickly - a larger sum than he’d asked for appeared in his account only hours after he’d submitted the application. He’s very depressed .. he’s spent the last 5 years building up his (very niche) business - last year was the first ‘good’ year and this year was set to be almost too busy ... until everything vanished in a puff of aerosolised virus in mid-March ... I don’t know if the business will ever recover...

JamSarnie · 04/10/2020 08:38

I am really fearful about jobs. I keep saying to DH if we come through this with both our jobs intact we will be doing well.

I can't imagine how upsetting it must be to have your business ripped from under you in this way.

Reedwarbler · 04/10/2020 08:54

This lack of imagination about other peoples circumstances. I get really annoyed when I see the line trotted out -'well, it's only a few months/a year (pick your own length of time) out of your life, surely you can do that without complaining', obviously this is when people complain about various lockdowns and restrictions.
Well, the percentage it is of your life depends on your age. It's very different for a 20 year old to a 70 year old. I/we worked hard all our lives and hoped to spend our retirement travelling, which we have done quite a bit so far, but that is curtailed, and by the time international travel (long haul) becomes a real (and safe) possibility again, we may be too frail to want to do it. Or my poor 93 year old fil, who looks likely to go into a care home, thus will die alone. It's this total lack of empathy I can't understand.

Littlebelina · 04/10/2020 09:24

I think the cineworld plan is for a 6 month mothballing rather than a permanent closure but still will result in 5000 job losses Sad.

TabbyStar · 04/10/2020 09:29

Sorry to hear about your DH Pleasedontdothat, I'm in a similar position (co director?), I have work but everything is taking such a long time to happen from clients with repeated delays that I'm only on about 30% of my normal income since March. I'm going to finally succumb to a loan, I've never wanted to be in debt, but I don't want to put living expenses on a credit card. If I was a sole trader I would have received £12k as many of my competitors have, it's the unfairness that gets me more than the financial problems.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 04/10/2020 09:40

Talking to my cousin in Greece yesterday and they are astounded at the disregard that a lot of people have for the economy. Like its some big monster that kills people.
Greece came under a lot of criticism for opening up to tourism so "early". But much of Greece has, in recent history, only a few years ago in fact, due to debt and austerity experienced the kind of deep recession that most Europeans would not be able to relate to.
Mass unemployment, poverty, homelessness. These things killed many too and its fresh in peoples minds.
Earlier this summer when I told of the young girl at the bakery in Crete. That was this year! This year!
They are pulling themselves out of this hole and this virus, is not going to stop them. If they can manage that risk they will.
The restrictions that are introduced there are well reasoned with the evidence explained and a regular review. Having that openness from their govt has also really helped as people understand why things are being done and for how long. So they have more confidence.
We don't.
They also still find it fucking hilarious (as does most of europe) that we quarantine our post and wash our groceries. That is what makes us a laughing stock.

Taswama · 04/10/2020 09:50

That care home story was lovely. I'm very glad not to have any relatives in a care home right now.

Willow2017 · 04/10/2020 10:38

That's a lovely story IBake.

Sorry about you husband having to go through that Pleased it's so unecessary after all his hard work.

CruCru · 04/10/2020 11:35

Yep, quarantining post and washing groceries is quite weird. It inconveniences the person who chooses to do it though so I’ve sort of mentally filed it under “not my circus, not my monkeys”.

What does irritate me is when people inflect their own, stricter rules on others. It’s not enough to follow the rules that are there and to use some common sense, the rules must be believed in as if they are a religion.

The economy is important and I can’t stand the attitude that doing anything to keep it going is just pure selfishness.

Reedwarbler · 04/10/2020 11:56

Yes, @CruCru I agree with you. It's not enough to abide by the rules, you have got to agree with and endorse them also, which I find a very concering concept, like being seen (and heard) to follow a party line as in North Korea. I also find it worrying that, if you don't agree with the rules you are possibly one or all of the following in some people's eyes; a brexiteer, an anti-vaxxer, a David icke supporter, a conspiracist and/or a flat earther. (There are probably a few more!) People seem to forget we have free speech.
I abide by the rules generally, but I have become a bit of a non consumer as I now avoid a lot of the things I used to do (eg hairdresser) because I hate wearing a mask, so I try and avoid situations where I have to. If I want to natter to a mate we do it over coffee at our homes.
Anyway, I hope everyone is having as happy a Sunday as they can with this b awful weather. I am on to marmalade today (only Mamade stuff) after the chutney yesterday.
Keep your peckers up.

Orangeblossom7777 · 04/10/2020 12:03

I liked reading the story about the care home 'heist' and how it was being reported by the BBC. That was good.

JamSarnie · 04/10/2020 12:04

I am hunkering down now for the long haul of shit times. I can't see how the government can give way on their stance that they need to squash the virus at all costs. But they have changed their mind so many times I can live in hope.

I do hope we don't have a harsh winter weather wise as that really will take the piss.

Curlygirl06 · 04/10/2020 12:10

Dreadful weather here too, bloody hate the English weather (grew up in a hot country) and even though I've been here over 40 years I can't get used to it.
I'm not looking forward to Christmas in retail, it's normally manic but if we still have number restrictions of customers it's gonna be carnage. I can see tempers will fray, mine being one of them!

JamSarnie · 04/10/2020 12:15

Coincidentally DH and I were discussing Christmas shopping this morning. We are going to drop buying presents for us both and only buy a couple online for family. As for food shopping we usually do a mix of delivery and supermarket but starting to wonder which will be less fraught and then you have to factor in any possible isolation if we dare to go out for a meal and end up T&T. Might have to avoid any restaurants 2 weeks prior.

Orangeblossom7777 · 04/10/2020 12:23

More on the app and that weird message people were getting here...
www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-54389083

Willow2017 · 04/10/2020 12:27

Retail will definately be manic if there are queues Curlygirl06 I can hardly wait! They will all spill out to the cafe in bad moods😄 I worked checkout last Xmas it was mind blowing!

I am trying to think of things for my teens for Xmas. So far I have one idea apart from my ds2's smellies. I need to try harder.😄

Taswama · 04/10/2020 12:29

On a lighter note, DS2 has used DS1's Clearasil instead of shower gel in the shower! So he should be spot free for a while!

Worldgonecrazy · 04/10/2020 12:57

The original reason for Yule and celebrating the solstice was to get us through the dark times of winter. It will be good to remember the real reason for having a festival of feasting and light this year. I’m actually looking forward to it .

Willow2017 · 04/10/2020 13:12

Lol at my food delivery. Ordered a chicken for today's dinner and a pork roast for later. Neither available! But i got 2 bags of potatoes I didn't order instead!🤣🤣 I already have pots they will all be off by the time we get through half of them (a couple are soggy now!) Put them in a paper bag fingers crossed they keep a few days. Oh and no baccy substituted so i have to go and get some after all. Arghhh.
But at least I got wine😉
