Curry I hope you do not mind?
I put the last message in, and didn't find a new thread. Which I found disquiting, so to calm my nerves here goes.

The only way I could treat my cat was by creeping up on her while she was eating. Luckily her wormer was spot-on as well; so I didn't have to shove anything down her throat.
@MissConductUS, You seem to have a version of Caputo's there...
www.shopcaputos.com/about-caputos
math - you're spot on, very similar to Uncle G's. My local Uncle G's used to be a single store Italian market called Turco's that was run by an Italian family that immigrated in the 1970's, then was bought out in 2019 by Uncle G's. New York has always had loads of people of Italian heritage and it's contributed greatly to our culture and cuisine.

How did you know about Caputo's?
@Nydj My cold is in the full blown stinker stage, hoping it will start to ease off tomorrow as right now I feel crummy!
So sorry about your cold, Spudlet - hopefully it will see itself out the door soon.

I feel like referring to my cold as my current cold like some people refer to their current husband or wife because I know it will not be the last one of the winter. I get so many colds every year - why hasn’t my body developed a proper immunity to any of them?!

SpeedofaSloth · 01/10/2020 20:12

There was a really red, low moon here tonight.

DH thinks he might be made redundant, we will know more tomorrow. He gets put at risk at least annually and has never has yet actually been selected to go, but we shall see.

Nydj · 01/10/2020 20:15

@MissConductUS

Good news from the States - we had Texmex takeaway last night, so after a lovely walk outside on my lunch break, I'm having a leftover crispy steak taco for lunch. Delicious. On for dinner (tea? supper?) tonight is pasta with Italian meatballs from Uncle Guiseppe's. DD, always a picky eater, will have to have something else.

Can the collective hivemind of MN please explain the difference betwen tea and dinner? Mr Google is unenlightening on this, but he's from California. Grin

This is just asking for trouble. No one can answer because it means different things to different people in different places and different times of the day!
boatyardblues · 01/10/2020 20:15

Afternoon tea is also referred to as high tea, although I think most Brits that kind of high falutin’ fanciness went of fashion round about 1908. Pre-COVID afternoon tea was becoming established as a nice thing to do for e.g. older female relatives’ birthdays, tame hen weekend daytime jollies. I love the basic concept of naice tea in china cups, dainty sandwiches and a smorgasbord of cake, but the timing always scuppers me. If I’m going to last from breakfast until mid afternoon, dainty nosh isn’t going to cut it & then your dinner is spoiled too. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I made my own packed lunch last night, which meant my sandwiches had the correct amount of coleslaw today. DH is too restrained.

I had a failed dinner experiment this evening: chicken breast chunks instead of sausages in a toad in the hole. Chicken is too bland and the pan was too deep and crowded. The batter was slicing consistency in the middle. 😆 Ah well, some you win, some you lose.

boymum9 · 01/10/2020 20:15

I got a new printer today which is exciting me more than it should Grin

Dinner instead of lunch (midday meal) and tea instead of dinner (evening meal) got used in SW London when I was a kid in the 90s. There isn't really a north/south divide on this one. I'd say it probably varies from family to family. One thing I think is certain is that no one says tea instead of lunch (midday meal). Grin

Squirrel26 · 01/10/2020 20:56

I have lunch in the middle of the day, but on the other hand when I was at school I had school dinners at lunch time. Except for the times I had a packed lunch from home. It's basically very confusing.

I need to empty the dishwasher and reply to an email. Don't really want to do either.

MissConductUS · 01/10/2020 21:10

@KoalaandRabbit

Tea is a regional thing - its a name for the evening meal if you live in the North of England / Midlands, Wales and Scotland - in the south of England its called dinner.

Confusingly the first areas call the midday meal dinner and southerners call it lunch.

There's also afternoon tea which is different again, normally taken for special occassions rather than everyday which has sandwiches (traditionally egg and cress, cucumber, smoked salmon etc), tea the drink and cream scones and jam, sometimes other cakes like Victoria sponge. Or champagne if you want it extra special.

Thanks Koala and others who contributed on this question. I think that part of the confusion for us Yanks is we think of afternoon tea that we see in old movies is "tea" for you all, other than the simple hot beverage of course.

The midday meal is universally called lunch in the US and the evening meal is dinner, except on Sunday when dinner can be mid-afternoon and the last meal of the day, at least for some people.

There are a lot of regional linguistic differences in the UK for a relatively small country.

AnneBoleynsHead · 01/10/2020 21:37

I made a crustless quiche/frittata type thing with oven chips & salad. Fish fingers for fussy (small) people (& DH who had bothHmm)

I saw the full moon tonight, beautiful

We have breakfast dinner and tea. We pronounce bath as bath not barth.

KoalaandRabbit · 01/10/2020 23:06

The lunch / dinner thing is confusing. As a child in the Midlands we had breakfast, dinner and tea and school dinners. When I went to university down south no-one knew why I was saying tea and there it was breakfast, lunch and dinner and afternoon tea for special events so I had to change then revert back at my parents. Then worked in London / south East and kids go to school there and its breakfast, lunch and dinner and school lunches.

We also go for cream teas which is tea and scones with cream and strawberry jam, normally 3pm-5pm. They serve those at places like National Trust if you visit and lots in Devon / Cornwall so had lots of holiday this summer in Devon.

Squirrel26 · 02/10/2020 08:18

The dog is being needy. I think he’s displeased that it’s raining so none of the neighbourhood cats are out for him to stare at through the window.

sueelleker · 02/10/2020 08:30

My Mum had a friend who did it with lamb cutlets instead of sausages.(The thin ones, not chops)

BamboozledandBefuddled · 02/10/2020 08:55

Dinner is the main meal of the day whatever time you have it. (Unless the main meal was brunch as you can't have dinner before midday.) Tea is a light meal in the evening, unless it's after 8 pm - then it's supper Grin Posh tea with fancy sandwiches and pretty cakes is always 'afternoon tea'.

It makes life fun Grin

Gives us something to talk about. Grin

Amazon claim to have delivered some pens and some stuff to go in the washing machine to re-waterproof coats. Bloody haven’t. Unless they’re in the shed.

NameAChange · 02/10/2020 14:31

I thought the hedge cutting man was here, but its the leaf blower. There's only about 25 leaves but he is giving a good go of it. It's quite mesmerising. Also incredibly bloody loud.

This is my block of flats btw, I don't have a private hedge cutter or leaf blower. I do want a leaf blower now.

Now there really are no more leaves. Yet he continues to blow. They are really dragging it out. He is going between the hedges. His mate is scratching his head under his cap and looking at his phone. Now he is just looking at him. THERE ARE NO MORE LEAVES.

NameAChange · 02/10/2020 14:32

Ok he has put it in the van now. He has come back with some sort of bright orange dustpan. I think they are going soon.

FawnDrench · 02/10/2020 14:42

Bought some smoked and some unsmoked bacon.

I like smoked, DH likes unsmoked.

The dog likes both.

SallySeven · 02/10/2020 14:47

We had a household debate on breaded ham yesterday. Still not sure what the consensus is.

NameAChange · 02/10/2020 14:48

@BamboozledandBefuddled You could have dinner for breakfast if it was last nights reheated 😋 Grin

Nydj · 02/10/2020 14:57

I made egg fried rice with stir fried veg on Wednesday for our evening meal - had leftovers for lunch and evening meal yesterday and finally finished it for lunch today. It wasn’t very good which may explain the copious amounts of leftovers that no one else wanted.

cheeseychovolate · 02/10/2020 14:58

My husband has got a cold and his moaning is annoying me.

MissConductUS · 02/10/2020 15:07

More rain this morning, so I got to try out the new jacked. I stayed dry but it was a bit too warm for an outer layer (14 degrees).

Homemade pizza is on for dinner/tea/whatever you lot call it again tonight. Grin DH has already defrosted the ingredients.

A bit shocking to hear about Trump getting covid. I lost quite a few patients younger and healthier than him, but there are some treatments now if his case is serious. If they send him to Walter Reed Hospital it's going to be chaos so close to the election.

We have a bird feeding hanging right outside our kitchen window. Daisy, my older girl was on the window sill this morning watching them feed and making strange squeaking noises. I think she was trying to entice them in.

MissConductUS · 02/10/2020 15:13
