So I just tried halloumi for the first time...

It was those chilli halloumi kebabs from M&S.... it was the saltiest thing I’ve ever put in my mouth! I could only manage one but stupidly cooked all 4! Under the grill for 7-11 minutes as instructed, turning regularly.
So what do I do with the other 3? Stick em in the fridge for tomorrow? Can they be eaten cold?
Can’t imagine they’d be very nice cold. Can they be reheated?

I know this is a stupid post but... I’m confused. I just don’t know what to think? Did I like it? Did I not? I just don’t know.
I was expecting some sort of delicious mozzarella type thing... but it was salty and, well, very squeaky.

Try a different brand! Yes, it's salty, but generally not 'as salty as sea water' & definitely not the saltiest thing I've had in my mouth 🤣

Love it grilled.

It's great cold as long as it's been well cooked!

formerbabe · 19/09/2020 20:33

Grate it finely and use on pasta like you would parmesan

Holothane · 19/09/2020 20:33

Oh I love an hallumi salad burger from our local chippy no chips. Wonderful.

I love it! We’ve been known to pretend it’s paneer and curry it. Also nice chopped small and put in tabbouleh.

FippertyGibbett · 19/09/2020 20:36

We dry fry it in the frying pan until brown and crispy.

Crinkledbeetroot · 19/09/2020 20:37

I love it! Currently have four packets in my fridge as I live in fear of running out!

It’s lovely in the Maggie Meat free Halloumi spice bags. Chuck it in with peppers and courgettes and chunky onion 😋

Squiffany · 19/09/2020 20:42

@PonDeReplay

It’s known as squeaky cheese in our house! I’d risk reheating.
Same in ours too.
PhilSwagielka · 19/09/2020 20:44

If the saltiness bothers you, bung some sauce on it.

drspouse · 19/09/2020 20:44

Now I really want some halloumi.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 19/09/2020 20:45

Yep, can definitely be eaten cold - or hot, or with salad or grilled, or you could soak it and re cook it.

It's cheese, it won't hurt you whatever you do with it.

tornadoalley · 19/09/2020 20:46

Don't like it at all. It's weird

1starwars2 · 19/09/2020 20:46

Now I am vegan, halloumi is the only thing I miss....

MintyCedric · 19/09/2020 20:47

This recipe for beetroot and halloumi bulgar wheat salad is gorgeous. The sweetness of the beetroot and pomegranate really offsets the salty halloumi

Peasinthefreezer · 19/09/2020 20:48

Battered from our local Chip shop - yum.

polkadotpjs · 19/09/2020 20:51

As I'm eating a (not halloumi) cheese sandwich for tea I'm sad that I don't gabr halloumi. I'd eat cold or warm up the bits and have in bulgher wheat salad with cucumbers and tomatoes and beetroot

SilverOtter · 19/09/2020 20:57

Mmmmmm halloumi🤤

MrsExpo · 19/09/2020 20:57

.....halloumi ..... ..... Envy (not envy) ....

What should you do with it? Do you have a bin OP?

DonttouchthatLarry · 19/09/2020 20:57

Yep we call it squeaky cheese too.

HaggieMaggie · 19/09/2020 20:59

Much love for haloumi from me 🧀

AuntyPasta · 19/09/2020 21:02

I can’t stand it either. I love salt and salty food but halloumi tastes like a spoonful of table salt to me. My mother hates salt and doesn’t add it to any food but loves halloumi Confused

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 19/09/2020 21:03

There is definitely an art to cooking it. When it's squeaky it's horrid. Only twice have I had it properly cooked and it was lovely. Pan fried.

Blondiney · 19/09/2020 21:03

I've had saltier things in my mouth, many moons ago mind Grin

Sexnotgender · 19/09/2020 21:06

Mmm, I love halloumi, I made halloumi fajitas for dinner tonight.

Mollypolly2610 · 19/09/2020 21:10

Cook it in a frying pan that you’ve fried bacon in. Delicious
