So I just tried halloumi for the first time...

It was those chilli halloumi kebabs from M&S.... it was the saltiest thing I’ve ever put in my mouth! I could only manage one but stupidly cooked all 4! Under the grill for 7-11 minutes as instructed, turning regularly.
So what do I do with the other 3? Stick em in the fridge for tomorrow? Can they be eaten cold?
Can’t imagine they’d be very nice cold. Can they be reheated?

I know this is a stupid post but... I’m confused. I just don’t know what to think? Did I like it? Did I not? I just don’t know.
I was expecting some sort of delicious mozzarella type thing... but it was salty and, well, very squeaky.

This is probably the issue tbh. Try just halloumi and dry fry it. Supermarket prepared stuff is never any good.

What did the cheese say to its reflection in the mirror?

'Halloumi!'

I'd put some chill jam on them, the sweetness should counteract the saltiness

I adore it - had it for lunch today.....soaked and dried first, than flattened and marinaded in harissa. Grilled and put in a lovely soft flat bread with Greek salad and a drizzle of minty dressing. Utterly divine in the sunshine under a gorgeous September sky.

Definitely too salty for my taste, I don’t understand the hype behind it.

I love halloumi, but haven't noticed it being very salty - I rarely eat salt so I would have noticed! I've only had it at one place though, and it wasn't raw.

Sorry it’s in the same category as avocado for me 🤮

If you don’t like it then throw it out.

We have some in the fridge, I won't allow it to be used until we have some more to replace it, like CrinkledBeetroot I have a fear of running out.
Same goes for Feta!

Our local does halloumi bites in panko breadcrumbs 🤤

@BigFart

Ah... perhaps I should’ve pan fried it rather than grilled? I kinda liked it... I think. I adore salt and savoury food... but honest to god, it was saltier than sea water.
Hmm... I shall stick them in the fridge and eye them up suspiciously tomorrow.
The jury is still out atm.

Noooo... pan frying intensifies the saltiness.

Cut up into cubes and add to salad like you would croutons. mmmm

Make Hallouimi fries. Slice into chips, coat in smoky paprika and fry in a bit of olive oil.yum.

Three keys to delicious halloumi:

  1. Fry it on high so it gets a brown crust
  2. Eat it asap from the pan, when it’s still hot and soft and hasn’t gone rubbery
  3. Eat with something a bit sweet and/or fresh - it goes really well with cooked tomatoes or cooked red peppers or roast squash for example. Avocado works also. You need something to contrast with the salt or it’s too salty.

Grate it and have it on macaroni.
Much nicer

There is a brand of halloumi called “Yorkshire Squeaky Cheese”. It’s delicious. Salty in a bacony way? Not sure, I havn’t eaten bacon since about 1987.

So I just tried halloumi for the first time...

Salty and squeaky is what makes halloumi great.

Dry fried. Never squeaky. Turns out fluffy every time.
I have it in a mini whole meal wrap, with avocado, sweetcorn, coriander and lime. And a spoonful of Greek yogurt (with a squeeze of chilli sauce mixed in).
Gorgeous!!

Lovely in a pan of roasted veg too

Put few slices in boiling water for few seconds and try it with bread after. It’s lovely.

I normally love halloumi but one time the pack we usually buy was disgustingly salty. If that was the first time I'd ever tried it I would have thought halloumi was gross! As it is, that bad batch actually has put me off and I've not had halloumi since. Maybe yours was a bad batch too?

Halloumi, bought in a block and made in Cyprus (where it's from) is bloody deliciously. You can grill it, fry it, eat it as it is. It's salty but lovely.
Halloumi bought preprepared anywhere else, m&s included, is just crap plastic. (Yes I'm Cypriot and thus a bit of a snob when it comes to Cypriot food. )

Halloumi is amazing and the squeakiness is the best bit.
