Watch us wreck the mike, watch us wreck the mike, watch us wreck the mike.
Psych.

Now gather nicely in groups of no more than six...
Unless you're outdoors in Wales...

Oh well, come on in whatever the laws where you are. Plenty of space in this bubble of sanity Wink

@AgentCooper I’d meet you happily though my giant ds won’t pass as a toddler 😃

I'm hoping this round of back to school colds settles over the next week or two.
I remember observing last year that they kicked in early, presumably due to already being rundown after a crap summer that wimped out during July (other than a few ridiculous blistering days that weren't nice for outdoors either!)

I ventured up to Decathlon. I now have an amazing winter coat. If I have one legacy from 2020, I may as well have it as the most voluminous, cosy, waterproofed coat with more pockets than I could legally put a person in to Grin I was driven up there by the DCs whinging that they have actually managed to outgrow their swimming trunks. Such a feat has only been accomplished once since they stopped with swim nappies Grin They seem to have needed a lot of stuff replacing since June. I suppose there hasn't been the steady drip of replacement since March. Plus they're coming out of those awkward size jumps like 6-7, so had been a bit snug in the 5-6 while 7-8 was far too big. So they're in for a winter of huge clothes. Grin

The actual trip was fine. I had my visor on, but still I feel awkward, and I just can't look people face on when they're masked. The tills were playing up and it was much better chatting jovially to the back of till guy's head Grin

He warned me that the coat might beep due to scanning issues, and I pointed out that it wouldn't look dodgy at all going off with arms full of a family's worth of stuff Wink

The carpark was quieter than usual. Not as quiet as the day the M1 was shut and it too 2.5 hours to get there and another 3 hours to get home as the region was gridlocked. The incident occured minutes before getting there so I was in trapped traffic behind the roadblock.
Still quiet nonetheless.

I went to the hairdressers just after lockdown was stopped when we didn't need to wear masks (they just wore visors).

Well now it's both for them and a mask for me. That was so hard to talk with a mask on having to raise my voice to be heard. And I could tell cutting hair was harder to gauge when they can't properly see you face as well as the visor and mask.

110APiccadilly · 16/09/2020 13:49

I have collected an work issued face mask with a clear panel in it, to be used when in face to face contact with the public. I'm glad they've thought about lipreading, but it's honestly the most horrible thing - hot, sweaty, and makes my glasses mist up. The clear panel also mists up very quickly, so I'm not sure it will help much.

I've been using the blue paper masks as they're so much lighter and have the nose wire, but I think that will no longer be allowed at work.

Oh are those the things the RCSLT were all raving over a few weeks ago as the solution to everything mask-related? They didn't look the most comfortable to be honest.

I’m afraid I am having a cry. I’m wfh, DS is with my parents. They’ve just taken him to the library where they live and it’s open, the children’s bit is fucking open. He was running around the lovely big children’s area and getting DM to read him piles of books. I am just so, so glad that this library is letting wee ones in to play and read, unlike my local. It feels like such a massive thing.

That is wonderful to hear especially as I just got a Dementory email from one of my local libraries.
110APiccadilly · 16/09/2020 16:22

@DominaShantotto They might be. It's just a cloth mask with a clear plastic bit in it more or less where your mouth is. I doubt it will solve much tbh.

Supermarketworker06 · 16/09/2020 17:02

Down by the seaside for a few days, several groups of people numbering over 6 on the beach, some old fart moaning about it but he didn't march over to break them up. (Mostly young lads, probably students, making the most of it before uni starts, probably thought better of it).
Loads of people wearing masks outside (why?) Lots of people riding bikes, sweating like a fat girl in a cake shop and wearing masks. Again, why?
On the bright side, the restaurant we had dinner in last night, none of the staff were wearing masks or visors. Lovely to actually TALK to the waitress without having to ask her to repeat herself 10 times.

wanderings · 16/09/2020 17:28

Headline on BBC news website is "Covid marshall unlikely, say councils".

Yep.

What I suspected all along. That's the problem, when they it is promised that they will arrive riding on unicorns.

BogRollBOGOF · 16/09/2020 17:41

I've not seen the masks with windows in action, but they are super-freaky. Are you supposed to read the mouth or the eyes, and you're still missing the visual information in between.

When I had hearing tests in my late teens, they identified my issues as auditory processing. I must need information from the cheeks joining up the mouth movements and the eyes because I'm really struggling with it. Then again I always found people like John Redwood whose mouths move and eyes do nothing to be very hard work to follow.

I'm really struggling with following the DCs' speech at present. I had thought that it was just mental fatigue from the constant company, but it's not improving from a couple of weeks in school. I know DS1 can rattle on and be a bit monotone if he's engrossed in a topic, but I'm the same with DS2 who is very expressive.

It's occurred to me today that if I have to isolate because of work DS will miss 2 weeks of school because there's no other adult to take/collect him and its made me feel really sad. I'm dreading having to isolate us and feel like it's only a matter of time.

A little old lady with COPD cried over me at work earlier because I was 'kind' and told her to take her mask off if it was causing her a problem. I told her she should just say she's exempt (because she is) and in most places it won't be a problem. I feel really sorry for those who haven't the confidence to say they can't wear one.

StareyCat · 16/09/2020 18:54

@Reedwarbler china appear to have nailed mass testing. There was a small number of cases in Wuhan a few months back and the entire city got tested in days. It apparently really helped boost confidence. China have also rolled out their prototype vaccine to the military and some key workers.

That's if you believe the line from China - I suspect the truth is somewhere in between what our government is saying and what theirs is in terms of how long it takes to get a large scale safe trial, but who knows!?

dingit · 16/09/2020 19:21

My dm has been to the dentist today to have impressions to have her front teeth remodelled as her blood cancer has changed the shape of her jaw. She was terrified, had to phone them before going in wasn't allowed a handbag ( not sure what they made of her wheelchair. ) They were lovely to her and extremely apologetic of the situation and she saw her regular dentist, who is also lovely.
She asked when they would resume regular work and check ups and was told in the new year.
I may be barking up the wrong tree but the cynic in me says that this is a good way to save the nhs a wad of cash, particularly as private dentists have gone back to practice as normal Angry

BogRollBOGOF · 16/09/2020 19:28

I'm so glad I managed to get an emergency appointment for a massive broken filling sorted on March 20th litterally the last day of near normality. I had a check-up around Easter so he did it there and then as I was there anyway. I booked me and the DCs in for October thinking this should have blown over, and predictably their April appointment was cancelled.

I’ve just heard the news about a local lockdown where I live, I’ve just sobbed and had a swear. Also just realised that if either of my children are ill. We will have to pay for a test so DH will be able to go to work.
My Mam who is now on antidepressants is just starting to get her mojo back, in part running after her GC.
I’m done. Good luck everyone.

PickAChew · 16/09/2020 19:41

Part of the point of mask wearing (so its claimed) is to protect the vulnerable. Yet its this group being bullied or at best feeling pressured to wear masks,

So well done @bakingcupcakes Flowers

DIL and all her friend mums have agreed they are DONE!! they will not be locked down again and see no-one for months, they are just not doing this to their children. Now they were compliant last time.

Angela Rayner to Boris Johnson

"I guess the next time someone with Covid symptoms drives from London to Durham it will be to get a test"

HeIenaDove · 16/09/2020 20:17

@justasking111 I was compliant last time but i wouldnt be with a second lockdown.

I complied last time but I won’t again. DS is so much more at ease with people when he’s not with only me all day. He’s really thrived since being at my mum and dad’s while I’ve been working from home and it’s given me a tiny bit of headspace to be a better mum. My parents would definitely not stop taking him and they’ve said so.
justasking111 · 16/09/2020 20:22

I was tidying up today ready for grandkids, so saw Angela Rayner in action with Boris. She was very good I thought, Boris looked beaten to be honest and sounded it. Being close to TV I saw him close up, his nose looked so odd full of cracks and peeling was most odd. In fact he looked pretty rough all round.
