On a positive note, BBC radio coverage is losing its "let's toe the party line" vibe. There was an interesting interview with the founder of Itsu on World at One, who basically tore a strip off the "six more months" line and said it was criminal to expect people to stay shut up and pause their lives for the next six months on someone's arbitrary say-so. He said they should be reviewing the data day by day and reconsidering restrictions on a weekly basis, as is their job.
I also recommend Newscast, as I like Adam Fleming. He was quite critical of the Whitty/Valance press conference, as they only shared one model and didn't give details of any alternatives (or, indeed, advise that there could be alternatives). They had an interview with an epidemiologist who said that the actual rate of doubling could be as long as 20 days rather than 7, which would obviously result in very different data. There was also no info given as to whether improved treatments and so on will have an impact on the death rate.
I actually think that the doom fest scientific briefing was intended to freak out the public so that they'd be more likely to comply with the new restrictions. It's classic behavioural psychology...
Notice that BJ was actually quite vague in his "six more months" wording and I suspect that it is expectation management. He didn't say "this is it for six months", it was more like "and it may be that these restrictions will continue in some form for six more months". That could mean anything from masks and full social distancing till March, or it could just mean no full football stadiums and huge rock concerts until next summer. I very much doubt that the government intend to keep the rule of 6, work from home, etc. in place for six months. But BJ's advisors have obviously told him not to be too optimistic, because people get pissed off when it doesn't work out.
I'm hopeful that they will have issues with the Emergency Powers renewal next week. The parliamentary party are far from on board and Labour surely can't be seen to vote to give the government total control without scrutiny.
HMO are not helped by having the likes of Angela Rayner and Jon Ashworth trotting out "only a 0 death rate is acceptable". Perhaps they'd like to extend that to all illnesses - we could achieve total immortality!
