@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath

I've been listening to radio 4 this morning and kept hearing figures 70% of people with covid-19 have no symptoms - but even in a winter with no covid I think it was half a million people per day have symptoms that match covid symptoms.

There was also a head of labs saying they can't just pick up the pace.

I think they must be hoping those spit tests that they keep talking about being tested on the news come on line soon or other quick tests.

I thnk pertty much everyone we know at the minute had a cold - it's that time of year and everyone is finger crossing hoping there no temp or cough developing or loss of taste.

When I get a cold, about day 2 or 3 I ALWAYS completely lose my sense of taste. Once I get to that stage I know I've got about 3 days of cold left. I can't smell either because my nose is blocked with snot, so does that mean I get a test? Buggered if I'm traveling 100's of miles for one.
LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 16/09/2020 08:57

I don't see how those figures they kept using stack up at the minute - and I don't see how the interviewers well eveyone with symptoms and their households should be isolating for 14 days will work long term as most adults have 2-4 colds per year and children between 8 and 12.

We're all on vitamin D tablets - and other vitamins, eating healthly mixing less than usual washing hands much more - I can't see we can do more. My parents have colds - they haven't been anywhere they do have District nurses come in to treat one of them and they wear masks but they've still picked a cold up.

Vintagelovingmum · 16/09/2020 09:01

So dh has finally heard about redundancies and he's not losing his job thankfully, but he's having to reduce down to a 50% contract taking our earnings below our outgoings so we're not sure how we're going to cope over the next few weeks, the trip to see my grandparents is off as we can't afford to pay for a hotel so I'm not sure I'll see my gran again. All because of this bloody virus and boris refusing to set up testing at airports although looking at all the mess of testing now I'm wondering if it's because they just don't have the capacity.
Basically I'm just amazed there hasn't been more protesting on the streets against the inept government and their handling of it all!
@AgentCooper I'm so sorry to hear about your baby group, I keep hearing people say about online groups but for me it's not the same, it's the getting out of the house that really made a difference with dd1 and what I'm missing out on with dd2

I have child with asthma - one with suspected asthma I can't get diagnosed as GP still on really limited services - and developing coughs with colds is very common for them and for me.

Cough-variant asthma is also common especially this time of year - though I think most schools are aware and taking that into account.

During our cycle last night we went through a country park. it was a lovely evening, warm, dry, still light enough for a picnic after work/school with your neighbours/family and their children!! We saw at least 6 groups of picnickers containing 4+ adults plus many children and, judging by the clothes, all these groups were Indian/Pakistani in an area of supposedly high infections particularly for this group. No we didn't report them and the logical part of me knows that they were out in the fresh air so probably as low risk as we were cycling but the illogical and yes, selfish side of me wants to stamp my foot and say Its Not Fair! You're breaking the Roolz and making all of us suffer.

RobinHobb · 16/09/2020 09:52

Year 5 has a positive case with sibling in year 6 and year 6 have been sent home to isolate. Year 3 already isolating and year 5 too. They are playing a game of whackamole here; it's only a matter of time before it gets to dds year. I have no idea how bad covid would be for me (ecv) but I just want her to be able to go to school!
I am not feeling positive about winter. Couldn't sleep all night so got up early and went for a run very early in the morning (left the baby monitor parked one inch from DHs ear on its loudest setting)
It was nice and helped but then back on the school run and school was half empty
Cases are going up even though no testing is available
I don't know what will happen now
Lockdown seems unavoidable but it also inaffordable

Worldgonecrazy · 16/09/2020 10:04

Hugs to everyone feeling the strain.

Re colds this is something tha I have found seems to work but is a lot to do with timing so you get the sucker at the right time. For me it’s about half a day after the first tell tale soreness building in my nose and throat.

Boil kettle. Fill bowl with boiling water. Get a big towel and make a tent over your head and the very hot water. It will be hot!! Keep breathing through your nose and then some through your mouth. Blink t get the steam in your eyes. Try and stay under the towel for at least five minutes and as close as you can to the water. This works as the cold virus can’t survive much above human body temperature so raising the temperature in your mucus membranes kills the fucker. Meanwhile your body has received enough of the original virus to mount it’s response and you e given it a helping hand by killing off a load of virus.

Then take two Boots flu capsules. These ones and (really important) no other because this seems to be the one that works best. ‘Maximum strength cold and flu relief for sore throat, chesty cough, headache, fever, blocked nose.
Active Ingredients: Paracetamol 500mg, Guaifenesin 100mg, Phenylephrine Hydrochloride 6.1mg‘

Take the tablets every four hours during the day for four days even if you think you’re winning. Don’t buy the caffeine ones and the branded ones don’t seem to worry as well despite showing the same ingredients.

This treatment has minimised every cold I’ve had for the last 15 years. It also minimises the symptoms which, in this crazy world where sniffles make you outcast, is a positive thing.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 16/09/2020 10:29

My Y9 year group already been sent home now this morning they are sending home my Y11 year group as they've had a postive test in the year as well.

One thing I didn't want to happen.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 16/09/2020 10:32

These are our well children - youngest still in school has a sore throat and sniffles and it was her that we were crossing our fingers hoping she doesn't develop a cough.

Ours fecking aren't - spoke to the Head the other day about the exact possibility that's now happened and she was adamant that as it was a cough that wasn't there previously it was off until we get a test.

Now have a test slot for lunchtime today for DD1 - who has been kicking and screaming in terror at the idea of having to have this done - it's going to be a massively traumatic restraining her by force job and then me being kicked to shit deal going on here.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 16/09/2020 10:58

I’m fecking cross. My eldest is ASD and had a rough day at school yesterday (home in tears), so I said he could stay home today to “decompress”. I didn’t realise this meant he was going to perch next to me jibbering stuff like “can we go to California for a water fight?”.

I’m feeling stressed and need to work and I can’t concentrate. I don’t think I can cope with another lockdown -
If I do I’ll have to drop all pretence of funding myself and I’ll be off to the food bank. 😔

chocolatesweets · 16/09/2020 10:59

@AgentCooper what can you do huh? I'd tell her though if I wanted the place to open. I don't care if someone calls me a granny killer anymore. My answer is that I would rather take the chance if I was a granny, than see my kids suffer. It's what loving parents do. I would die for my kids. It's true.

chocolatesweets · 16/09/2020 11:00

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane big hugs to you. I'd make you a cup of tea if you were here.

Very seriously thank you though. Always a kind and sympathetic ear here from women who “get” it.

GROUP HUG!

CruCru · 16/09/2020 11:10

Ah, there you are. I am on the train to see my parents - first time I’ll have seen them since March.

Willow2017 · 16/09/2020 11:17

I am still wondering how these masks are effective? Do they differentiate between covid virus, flu virus and cold virus? It seems they don't work against colds nor flu. Is there a scientific explanation for this that hasnt been mentioned anywhere?

Thankfully my ds2s school hasn't shut down any year groups yet so keeping everything crossed. It's just crazy that 200 kids are all walking the same way to school everyday yet they are expected to stay 2m apart! It's not going to happen. Then they are in school all day together in groups in and out classrooms, together at breaks and out and about for lunchtime. What kid is going to stop going for lunch with thier best friends or walk 2m apart and tell 1 or 2 other friends they can't go with them?

Ds2 has asthma. Rarely effects him apart from the odd time they are doing outside p.e. if its cold and windy. He carries his inhaler then just in case (which is a good thing because another friend had an attack during a long run and didn't have his inhaler so ds2 gave him his while another friend ran for the teacher.) Or if he gets a proper cold which will then make him cough too.
But he does have this unerring ability to get a chest infection every year usually when we go away for October holidays! So he will not be wearing a mask if its going to affect his breathing in any way. Anyone who has an issue due with that will get thier arse handed them on a plate.

I followed an ambulance to hosp too many times with ds1 when he had asthma and was kept in being nebulized every few hours to give two what anyone else thinks. (Thankfully he grew out of it)

albazavi · 16/09/2020 11:22

We're in this sorry mess of school/ colds/ no tests here as well. Ds1 has had 2 half days in reception. Had a snotty nose after day 1. His lung condition means we have to up his saline nebullisers when he gets a cold so it doesn't go on his chest. The whole point of it is to make him cough up the mucus. So now he has a cough- because he was on it 3 times yesterday. We all have the cold- all 5 of us. It is just a cold!!

So off school today, waiting call back from his teacher so I can explain its acoldand his condition/ treatment. Absokutlry zero tests (drive thru/ walk thru/ postal) in my area.

If we have to isolate every time he has a cough, theres no point him starting school at all. He would be off half of every week. We survived settling at pre school last year because they accepted that if he was showing signs of being poorly, I'd pick him up, take him to doctors/ hospital and bring him straight back

Pinkflipflop85 · 16/09/2020 11:32

Just seen on news that the 6 person rule will be reviewed in 2 weeks and if it hasn't helped then further measures are coming.

The cynic in me thinks that they've conveniently made tests hard to get this week so numbers stay low. Then in 2 weeks, testing will be ok but lo and behold numbers will go up. Then draconian measures can be brought in and the public will be blamed for mingling.

Willow2017 · 16/09/2020 11:35

AgentCooper
Maybe point out that other groups have stared again and you don't see why yours can't. Probably others are all feeling the same as you but don't want to be the first to.point out the obvious and will join you? Fingers crossed.
Vintagelovingmum
That's crap i am sorry to hear that. Do they think they will get back to.normal at some point? Will you be able to get benefits to.help you out? Take everything you can get.

Reedwarbler · 16/09/2020 11:51

I saw on the news last week (or so) a section about Wuhan. It showed a music concert being watched by hundreds of people crowded into a swimming pool in rubber rings (did any one else see this? I said to my dh that I expect the water was largely piss, but I am digressing here!) They now have no virus and life has gone back to normal. How have they done this? Does anyone know? It also means that they have (allegedly) had less than a year of pandemic from start to finish, which is heartening. Does this mean that it just runs its course and goes away?
I have been feeling so fed up I am on a mission now to see/entertain as many friends as possible. Already organised a lunch for next week. However I spoke to one who lives in (owns) one of those flats in an over 60's complex. I could not persuade him to come here and he doesn't want me to go there because he is 'too frightened'. On speaking to him further, it transpired that he hasn't been out of his one bed flat - not even over the threshold, since February. I find that totally shocking.

@Willow2017 I have done already, I’m afraid. I’ve been the relentless Pollyanna voice on the group chat for months suggesting how we might open up safely but the chief dementor is not having it. It’s like banging my head on a brick wall. I’ve been asking on local Facebook groups about other playgroups but all you get is people trying to sell you classes I know DS will hate. With the restrictions in Glasgow people aren’t wanting to meet up outside in a group of parents and wee ones either. Unless anyone on here is? Wink

I have robust discussions with my sister about this, she isn't full on dementor but is more cautious than me and does like evidence.

A piece in the Times relating to cruise ships
A ship with no masks found that, of those infected, 20% were asymptomatic. Whereas another boat where masks were issued (N95s to staff and ordinary surgical ones to passengers) of those infected 80% were asymptomatic.

It's a bit flakey evidence to me as it doesn't give absolute numbers but I guess it shows that surgical masks, help to reduce the viral load at least. I doubt it applies to cotton masks or chin hammocks though.

PickAChew · 16/09/2020 13:03

I normally get my first autumn cold around my birthday, in October. I can't take oral decongestants. They devongezt the other end, too🤢 Otrivine or similar nasal sprays usually keep me functioning, though.

DominaShantotto · 16/09/2020 13:15

Back from our trip down to Leicester - the test station was pretty damned quiet with lots of people standing around not doing anything. Just the waiting game now - the staff there had no clue about results turnarounds anymore either since it's all going tits up.
