what music did your parents listen to?

I'm working my way through the Eurythmics, The Beatles and Paul Simon atm.

What else might my dad have listened to when I was young???

Loving the Neil Diamond mentions here... big in our house/car and I still love him now!

Pretty much on a loop: Shitloads of Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon Gracelands and other solo stuff, Wings, Dolly Parton, Erasure, Simply Red, George Michael ❤️ and Wham!, Sam Cooke, some Genesis, some Johnny Cash and Kenny Rogers. A lot of Classical music on some amazing Classical Gold LPs with illustrations on the back of the great composers all looking a bit stern 😂

My dad has a bit of a penchant for making mix tapes off the radio, so I randomly know a few Billy Ocean songs word for word, likewise I Don’t Wanna Dance by Eddie Grant 😂 and 99 Red Balloons. A load of other one-offs I’ve forgotten and a few terrible ‘Highway Hits’ style soft rock compos, Boston, Free, ZZ Top etc. I loved them all!

WorryWartOne · 11/09/2020 23:07

Oh and a fair amount of Barbra Streisand!

Rebelwithallthecause · 11/09/2020 23:08

@EggyPegg

I'd forgotten about Boney M. We had one record with an album cover that really freaked me out as a child. I was telling DH about it the other day as it somehow came up, and had to google it to show him.

I HATED it!

That’s an amazing LP cover @EggyPegg

I actually love Boney M now I’m older, they’re great songwriters and very original - they have some pretty ‘interesting‘ videos on YouTube so I’m not as shocked by that insane picture as I might once have been! Check out Mr Boney’s hilarious homemade cape jobby in the Rasputin vid 😂 and his mad dancing.

I don't think a lot of that is 80s music though... And sorry op, this got quite long and it could have been longer, I'm now mentally going through all my dad's records and he has so many!

Kisforkaylied · 12/09/2020 01:59

My mum liked country music. Also Simon & Garfunkel, Beach Boys, The Kinks, Abba, Elton John, Slade, Bowie & 70s disco.

My dad is much older and has niche interests, so mainly classical music, Irish freedom fighting songs, Ewan Maccoll / Peggy Seeger, stuff like the Threepenny Opera.

beautifulmonument · 12/09/2020 02:16

Prince & George Michael

Born early 80s. My Mum listened to David Bowie, ABBA, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, T-Rex and Bruce Springsteen. Dad was into Queen, Meatloaf, Jean-Michel Jarre, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Genesis and The Police.

I still love Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, Queen and Bruce.

EggyPegg · 12/09/2020 08:37

I messaged my dad to ask him and this was his reply...

A true mish mash Neil Diamond, Elton John, John Lennon, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and of course the Beatles, as you quite rightly observed Queen but for headphones Kraftwerk and Jarre Autobahn and Oxygene.

Cattenberg · 12/09/2020 08:39

Dad - Paul Simon, Cat Stevens and the Beatles
Mum - The Carpenters

Cattenberg · 12/09/2020 08:43

Dad also liked Sky, a band who played classical music on electric guitars. They were good IMO.

GreenPlum · 12/09/2020 08:48

It's funny how our kids won't get this as people rarely listen to one album over and over these days

BarbedBloom · 12/09/2020 11:29

Rock music. Bon Jovi, Blue Oyster Cult etc

EggyPegg · 12/09/2020 11:38

Inspired by this thread, I've just told Alexa to play Elton John. It's lovely having it on in the background. So many songs remind me of my childhood.

pandamoniummm · 12/09/2020 11:58

My dad liked dire straits
