what music did your parents listen to?

I'm working my way through the Eurythmics, The Beatles and Paul Simon atm.

What else might my dad have listened to when I was young???

My dad listened to the moody blues. I quite liked them. He was about 30 in the early 80s. He also listened to the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and a lot of folk music (I think that was just him rather than reflective of his generation though)

Inspired by this thread, I've just told Alexa to play Elton John. It's lovely having it on in the background. So many songs remind me of my childhood.

It's funny how our kids won't get this as people rarely listen to one album over and over these days

I still listen to Eurythmics and Queen now and I'll never stop. My kids love Queen. (Yay! Parenting win!)

I messaged my dad to ask him and this was his reply...

A true mish mash Neil Diamond, Elton John, John Lennon, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and of course the Beatles, as you quite rightly observed Queen but for headphones Kraftwerk and Jarre Autobahn and Oxygene.

My mum liked country music. Also Simon & Garfunkel, Beach Boys, The Kinks, Abba, Elton John, Slade, Bowie & 70s disco.

My dad is much older and has niche interests, so mainly classical music, Irish freedom fighting songs, Ewan Maccoll / Peggy Seeger, stuff like the Threepenny Opera.

I don't think a lot of that is 80s music though... And sorry op, this got quite long and it could have been longer, I'm now mentally going through all my dad's records and he has so many!

@EggyPegg

I'd forgotten about Boney M. We had one record with an album cover that really freaked me out as a child. I was telling DH about it the other day as it somehow came up, and had to google it to show him.

I HATED it!

That’s an amazing LP cover @EggyPegg

I actually love Boney M now I’m older, they’re great songwriters and very original - they have some pretty ‘interesting‘ videos on YouTube so I’m not as shocked by that insane picture as I might once have been! Check out Mr Boney’s hilarious homemade cape jobby in the Rasputin vid 😂 and his mad dancing.
