I'm just about young enough not to remember those. I spent my childhood being terrified by Charlie and I Grin

I wasn't a fan of adverts featuring kids in parkas being fried as they flew their kites under pylons or getting splatted on the railways either Grin

TheOrchidKiller · 02/09/2020 14:29

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito
Oh hang on, that's from the Protect & Survive leaflet about what to do in the event of a nuclear attack.
Which was also a load of useless crap, as I recall.

Plus ca change.

Worldgonecrazy · 02/09/2020 14:55

The COVID-19 announcements over the tannoy on our local Aldi sounded exactly like the bloke who did the 3 minute warning.

Willow2017 · 02/09/2020 15:10

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 at the 'Protect and Survive and those adverts.

Well Fuck fuck fuckity fuck is all I can say about work now. 😠😠🖕🖕🖕

That would freak me out. Still can't hear Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood without getting a shiver because of that voice of doom.

Have noticed the GP practice & our hospitals' switchboards have the same Corona Man saying in a very slow voice, "If you think you have a high temperature....." every time you ring up.

Hospitals also have an automated voice telling you to, "Stay AT home if YOU have aNY sympTOMS of CORona viRUS."

So tempted to ask if putting the stress on the wrong syllable is a symptom.

TheOrchidKiller · 02/09/2020 15:33

@Willow2017 are you still doing EOTHO at your work, or is it something else that has brought on the triple-middle fingered salute? (I find doing that for real but behind a closed door very therapeutic).

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 02/09/2020 15:35

@BogRollBOGOF I’m not expecting much from the council pools, but my gym has one and the kids are allowed in if I pay. Or not. Depending on who’s in reception. 😁

Thought it might do for winter entertainment.

Pixel7777 · 02/09/2020 15:41

FIL in hospital very poorly and the care has been dire - missing discharge letters, just told we can pick him up even though his oxygen is low...just awful. Hospital usually pretty rubbish but this is terrible. It;s not even busy.

Think putting the stress on the wrong syllable is my intonation exam usually.

Kids back at school tomorrow - I'll believe it when it happens - I don't dare to dream anymore at the moment!

Masks ordered. Goes against my principles but as DS is unlikely to agree to wear the clumsily-fashioned efforts I made myself out of scarves & hair bobbles, Amazon it is.

Disposible masks wash. I don't know what happens if you put them loose in the machine, but left in a pocket they come out quite nice.

That's good to know, given how much havoc a used tissue can cause if it infiltrates the laundry!

Also washing surprisingly well are 5 pound notes, pen torches (they last about 5 washes before water breaches the sealed unit) & corkscrews Shock
Lipsil also washes well, provided the lid stays on & you refrigerate it after use. (Just in case anyone fancies trying a little experiment).[/quote]

But don't try it with your bank card! Particularly if you use a tumbler dryer Grin

TheOrchidKiller · 02/09/2020 16:11

I'm sorry @Pixel7777 that sounds very tough, & even harder when you can't go in to visit & see the situation with your own eyes, & speak to staff directly.

@DominaShantotto Knew you would get the intonation reference!
Can't believe DS is back tomorrow either.

Oh no!

Unbelievably there's another thread about this and some people seem to think that it's ok. Wow.
SomewhereEast · 02/09/2020 16:16

@ISaySteadyOn

Quite. Take people's coping mechanisms away and their mental health gets shot to hell which means their choices may not be as good.

I was genuinely recovered from depression before lockdown. It only took 10 years. Now I am not back to square one exactly but more like between square 2 and 3 and I am quite angry about it. I worked really hard to recover on my own and it's as though that doesn't matter cos Covid.

I'm in much the same boat. I'd even come off anti-depressants. Lockdown really freaked me out (for various reasons related to growing up around people with awful MH, being at the mercy of others' anxieties is a bit of a trigger) & took away all the little positive things I'd put in place to boost my mood. I'm feeling much more even now, but a winter lockdown can fuck right off.
Ibake · 02/09/2020 16:16

And sorry to hear about your FIL @Pixel7777

No just absolutely fed up. Expected to do far too much before we open yet once we opened only 3 staff in! I may be awesome but my ability to splitting myself in 3 needs practise! All you get is you should have done xyand z by now ermmm you keep asking me to do
A b and c!!! I haven't a list of what I am supposed to do/get every morning and as i don't do early mornings frequently it all changes every time! Yet the only time i get spoken to is to have orders barked at me or questions. Sick as a chip.when some of the younger ones hide through the back doing everything at a snails pace or chatting while I am going at 100mph. Its not like they can't get moving when told it's just they need telling!
At least I heard them getting told to get doing x and stop standing around doing sfa before I left so at least someone else noticed. And one of the lads thinks he is boss...No matter if someone else has said something to me he will come and repeat it very slowly. Gonna deck him before I leave! Job hunting yet again.

Just a grumpy knackered and aching old bisum today😄.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 02/09/2020 16:24

Apparently they will need masks tommorow.

Though they'll have disposable ones to hand out as first year groups back may not have time to get any - have to be three ply will be worn in public area and kids have option on keeping them on in class if they chose and they'll need a plactic bag to keep them in.

If there's a genuine reason the chidlren can't wear them school need to be informed as soon as possible.

The kids do have some but I've ordered more as washing and drying can get problematic in winter. I "like" the washable ones with adjustable ear elastic with the carbon inserts - they were more tolerable than I thought and haven't yet set DS asthma off.

That's shit.

DDad got lucky and while tests results done in hopsital went missing Hmm- and delayed some aspects of home treatment they've had them re-done at home now. They've had much more support since hospital admission- though first few days they were trying to get then to agree it wasn't needed Angry but since then a lots happened for them and things are looking better.

Have you tried the hospial's PALS - they might be able to offer some help or assistance or help you get more information.

Anyone got tips for cleaning a burned pan. It was a Covid related work call that caused me to forget to turn it down.

shinynewapple2020 · 02/09/2020 17:19

@Ibake

This is an absolute disgrace. Wonder just how many schools are doing this. All those baying bitches on all the other threads, is this what you wanted? Are you happy now? You pop it on for a 30min supermarket shop but you've just condemned your kids to wearing one all day, every day. I don't even have kids at school anymore and I am so fucking angry about this.

I can just see the AIBU's in a few weeks time: I campaigned for masks in schools and now my teen hates me/has started self harming/is skipping school.

Here's a thought - actually likelihood of healthy teen dying from covid in schools so far is zero. In 2019 10 suicide deaths were recorded for people prescribed roaccutane, the drug used to treat teens with acne. Ok, it's a dramatic example but the extrapolation is no more far fetched than some of the other histrionics going on right now.

I don't think that the students have to wear the masks all day. I think it's just in corridors when moving between lessons. So just 5 or 10 mins at a time

Coca Cola, the real stuff, simmer it over a low heat and it should come off no problem.

Back to school tomorrow, our school seems very keen to get them back in, had an email 2 days ago confirming it all so not expecting any changes unless something drastic happens. Smallest is starting nursery tomorrow and again they are very laid back about it all and have had no issues since they opened in June. Dreading leaving him though, it's only for 2 hours tomorrow but he's left so rarely these days that he will kick up a fuss and he's never been before apart from the drop offs and pick ups for his brother last year. He will be fine but I hate having to leave him screaming for me even if it has to be done.

Ibake · 02/09/2020 17:27

@shinynewapple2020 for a lot of schools that's true but schools with over zealous heads writing letters such as the one I posted earlier are mandating all day, including classrooms. Twitter today full of similar letters from other schools. Because the UK government (spineless) left it up to HT's to decide some kids are now going to pay the price.

@countrygirl99 fairy liquid and water in the pan and then simmer. Usually does the trick unless it's really bad.
