Leeds did track and trace. DS and girlfriend had all the symptoms at the end of February as did others in their halls building. Come March they (whoever they were )were taking away students wearing hazmat suits. Then all the students got the nod to go home now!!! Was bizarre, we were racing to collect DS whilst we waited for him to collect stuff a coachful of chinese students were arriving. Surreal...

@profpoopsnagle not a dementory partner- which must be hard to live with- but several dementors around me. I know it comes out of their anxiety. But sometimes it feels like my opinion & feelings don't count. I empathise with their anxiety about being around people from other households, but what about my need to have social contact & to talk about something other than how we're all doomed for once?

@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath the train journey sounds great. Might give that a go soon.

Just done the food shop. Thought I'd buy DS some washable masks for school. Big Sainsbury's don't stock them (they checked for me). They were selling disposables but I'm not buying those.

He'll have to make do with the two he's got for the start of term. I'm not trailing round the shops to get some, & I know there aren't that many shops that sell them because DD was after some new ones the other day.

Will have to try online now. Buffs aren't allowed, & we bought those when the masks in shops thing started. Grrr.

Pixel7777 · 30/08/2020 15:06

The Co-op has some kids masks by the till which seemed pretty good. £3 I think for three?

Pixel7777 · 30/08/2020 15:08

Yesterday I met my friend, she was not dementory which was nice but is in a wheelchair because of MS and was told to shield.

We are going to keep meeting to get through the madness; she is off to the city on the train today.

Thanks, but he is 17. Am trying to picture his stubble poking out from under them! (But I'll have a look).

According to elsewhere on here, students are going to be wandering around their neighbourhoods infecting the whole local population. Because students haven't spent the last 6 months in their parents' neighbourhoods, & certainly haven't been hanging out with their old school friends, and even (shock horror) been going out to work.

Students are the new disease-ridden vectors. It was primary school kids before today. I wonder who will get that label next?

WouldBeGood · 30/08/2020 15:29

@TheOrchidKiller amazon for masks. I’ve just ordered DS a pack of black ones for his giant head (like mother like son😃)

SomewhereEast · 30/08/2020 15:32

The uni thing is interesting for us as DH & I both have backgrounds in the university sector. DH worked in admin in various Oxford colleges & finished up as a college registrar before changing careers. Unis are a potential issue for all sorts of reasons - much more than schools actually, for all the drama there's been about that - but the emotional / social impact of pushing everything online would be huge, especially for less advantaged or confident young people. This is the generation who've already had their last year of secondary school & their A-levels fucked up. I just don't personally have the appetite to screw them over any more.

amicissimma · 30/08/2020 15:33

Stop press:

Disposible masks wash. I don't know what happens if you put them loose in the machine, but left in a pocket Blush they come out quite nice.

I'm not sure if HMG would approve.

Do you care what HMG think?

I understand that it is recommended they can be washed a couple of times (they're kind of like J cloth aren't they?) but it is best to put them in a wash bag - and a pocket it kind of a wash bag isn't it?

@Wouldbegood
Masks ordered. Goes against my principles but as DS is unlikely to agree to wear the clumsily-fashioned efforts I made myself out of scarves & hair bobbles, Amazon it is.

That's good to know, given how much havoc a used tissue can cause if it infiltrates the laundry!

Also washing surprisingly well are 5 pound notes, pen torches (they last about 5 washes before water breaches the sealed unit) & corkscrews Shock
Lipsil also washes well, provided the lid stays on & you refrigerate it after use. (Just in case anyone fancies trying a little experiment).

Justgivemewine · 30/08/2020 16:14

@profpoopsnagle

You are not alone. Examples of my dh’s dementoring are

  • complaining about the shopping delivery bags in the hall because he kept brushing past them and “had to wash my leg twice now!”
I also had to put a stop to him calling them covid-bags ffs🤦🏼‍♀️
  • constantly commenting “they’re not SD!” at the telly if people aren’t far enough apart

He’s getting a bit better but I’m suprised my eyes don’t hurt from all the 🙄

Willow2017 · 30/08/2020 16:20

Been in town with ds2. Pretty busy and 'normal' except for the masks in shops. Everyone ignoring the 'pedestrians please walk in the left signs'😀 Had to get masks for ds2 for school. Hilarious as they quite clearly state on them they are 'fashion masks not medical masks' when did wearing a mask become fashionable? (Before now i mean) And what use are they if not proven to stop germs?
Had coffee and pastry in non dementory cafe. Not even a t&t form pushed at me. Obvioysly they have stopped doing half price food and drink too wish to feck ours would. Not looking forward to tomorrow!

Did food shop and got some violas for pots. And the sun is shining! All in all a good day.

I noticed at work yesterday a few t&t forms were left blank on tables.🤔 Maybe everyone is Sick of filling them in over and over when they can't keep up with them anyway.

Uni stuff is uninformed hysterical nonsense. Cant believe so called higher education providers cant see it for themselves.

Willow2017 · 30/08/2020 16:23

- complaining about the shopping delivery bags in the hall because he kept brushing past them and “had to wash my leg twice now!”

Holy crap that's uber dementoring!
Glad he has calmed down a bit.

TheOrchidKiller · 30/08/2020 16:28

@Justgivemewine Wine no wonder that's your username if your DH is worrying about brushing up against a bag!

tell him to wash the bags in bleach & dry them before reusing, which is what a relative of mine is doing.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 30/08/2020 16:30

DS is off to uni soon
He was told months ago what their track and trace set up was and how they would support any students isolating
Sick of this bollocks now

WouldBeGood · 30/08/2020 16:33

My hairdresser (mobile, total AD) told me yesterday she’s scunnered of it all as is everyone she knows. Particularly the masks in schools here.

dingit · 30/08/2020 16:37

I'm taking comfort from the fact that there are only 3 active cv threads in active conversations at the moment. Surely this is a sign that everyone has had enough?

Willow2017 · 30/08/2020 16:40

God I hope so. If i see yet another 'mask thread' i will implode!

BogRollBOGOF · 30/08/2020 16:42

DH is alright really. A bit more cautious than me but he is male and a decade older Wink I'm secretly proud every time he uses my terminology "face rag" Grin I just wish he'd leave the house more (laziness and loss of habit not Covidphobia)

I have had a face rag incident today. You'd think that just buying an ice cream would be easy enough wouldn't you. It seems that 45 seconds is enough in a busy place with lots of noise and hot from just finishing a long walk Confused The girl at the counter was lovely, "panic attack or asthma?" sat me down and held my hand. She's had plenty too and was just calm and utterly lovely. It's like some kind of physical tripping of my fuse without much warning. Previously I've gone years in between them.

The ice cream was bloody delicious though, toffee, with sauce drizzling through and fudge bits.

Willow2017 · 30/08/2020 16:52

She sounds fab BogRollBOGOF Glad she helped you out. Now stop putting yourself into that situation and don't wear one again. That's an order. And pass some ice cream. 😉

justasking111 · 30/08/2020 16:52

Just been over to Conwy to drop something off for DS. Mother it is rammed, queues outside every shop, cafes full, quay full, so I decided to count masks. How many do you think I saw??

BogRollBOGOF · 30/08/2020 17:20

I did brave the supermarket without last night. If somewhere is fairly quiet like the 30s to sit down in McDonalds, that is in my coping zone. At least I'm understanding the combination of triggers and knowing what's a problem rather than it being purely my instinct that I can't stand the things IYSWIM. It's definitely the combination of other factors in the surroundings at play. I think also just being detached from the busyness of life for so long is exacerbating it, and that's from someone who has been out regularly through the last 5 months. I never was great in crowded places (would rather sit in a gently humming country pub than shoulder to shoulder in a city bar type thing) and my general tolerance to that has probably decreased through social distancing and reduced capacities.

It shouldn't matter why I'm not wearing one, but if a twunt did challenge me, I want to be sure of myself that my reasons are solid.

When we were travelling down on holiday, we stopped at an NT property for a couple of hours break. There was a sign at the toilets to wear one, but they were empty, so I thought "fuck that", went in, pissed a load of DEATH (or not Wink ) into the sewerage system, washed hands and came out. On exiting a lady at the door called out "You should put your mask on" I walked past and said "I don't want a panic attack thanks". It turned out she was calling over to her husband at the gents Blush She appologised saying she wouldn't be so rude to say it to a random person, and I appologised back for taking it personally and we parted amicably in a very civilised way Grin
Such an unMumsNetty ending!

Willow2017 · 30/08/2020 17:27

Good for her. Glad she spoke to you and clarified it.

SpnBaby1967 · 30/08/2020 19:34

My Sensei's daughter is heading off to Winchester Uni next week. Given he is one of the hero front line NHS workers he is very infused and confident that she will be just fine and uni is no more a risk than anywhere else.

That BBC article is disgusting, why cant people rationalise the difference between an 18-50 year old getting it & a 100 year old getting it?? I'm so sick of reading about cases going up and threats of local lockdowns every 5 bloody minutes.

Why does it matter if 1700 people caught it, if 1650 of them are low risk, and the other 50 may be high risk but unlikely to die unless very old.

Honestly, I'm losing the will to live now.

SpnBaby1967 · 30/08/2020 19:35
