Just that really, I would like it to be in a nice area as well.
Is it even possible?

Both Oldham and Bradford have consistently been voted as some of the worst places to live btw.

countdowntonap · 23/08/2020 09:34

Staffordshire Moorlands.

Thank you, I have been having a look at some of the properties available in some of the areas that have been suggested and it’s amazing what you can get for £200,000. We are definitely living in the wrong area for value of properties, our house is a 3 bed terrace but the 3rd bedroom is small, no drive, it is valued at £365,000 and that is one of the cheapest 3 bed houses around here.
My DC are currently happy to move but my 11 year old is just about to start senior school so might not want to after being there a little while.
I definitely don’t want to live in the “ghetto” or high crime area but I also don’t want to live in the middle of nowhere as I want my DC to have some independence so probably a town rather than a city.

West Midlands.

Not the "posh" areas outside of Birmingham. Look at some parts of Halesowen and Stourbridge.

This is the strength of the house I linked. 10 minutes onto town on a bus that runs every 10 minutes for just £1 for a teen with proof of age. Or it's walkable in just over half an hour as it's such a small city. Plenty of amenities closer to home, anyhow. Lots of safe open green space.

East Yorkshire? Hull has its issues, but there's a ring of quite decent towns & villages round it (Cottingham, Beverley etc). The western side of the East Riding of Yorkshire is within striking distance of York & quite pleasant, although I think more expensive?

morosetinkler · 23/08/2020 11:08

I wouldn't live in Oldham or Bradford if you paid me, not even in Tong. It's OK but there are much nicer places to live.

Thank you for this.

Completely agree.

Can't wait to get out of here. I hate it.

CrazyHorse · 23/08/2020 12:44

slightly over budget but one hour from London by train and in the catchment of outstanding schools.

Beebopbad · 23/08/2020 12:54

Folkestone. Or near Salisbury.

Bluesheep8 · 23/08/2020 16:15

West Yorkshire as a county cannot be categorised as "rough as fuck" just because there some not so nice areas. The same goes for pretty much everywhere.
Bit of a sweeping statement Hmm

Bluesheep8 · 23/08/2020 16:16

Someone will come along and say "Oh no not Salisbury - they poison people there!" at this rate Grin

AppleKatie · 23/08/2020 16:32

That might have helped the house prices mind Hmm

Quite right! And there's far more terrorist attacks in London than elsewhere as well, not to mention the knife crime. How can anyone raise a child there, no wonder the house prices are so low...!

These people have e clearly never been to N Leeds/Wetherby area the Golden Triangle, or Ilkley/Otley/Menston.
redeyetonowheregood · 24/08/2020 04:03

West Norfolk. Downham Market/King's Lynn on trainline to kings cross and close to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.

Bluesheep8 · 24/08/2020 06:22

bikerunski the part of West Yorkshire I live in is absolutely stunning. Property always sold incredibly quickly but at the moment, sold signs are going up before a For Sale sign.
Amazes me that people can make such ridiculous statements about somewhere they've never even been.

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2020 06:35

@Bluesheep8, my part of W Yorks is pretty stunning too. Gorgeous scenery, Outstanding schools, pretty average house prices, certainly able to get 3 beds for £200K. Good transport links. But I’m happy for people who’ve never visited to think it’s grim here, so we can keep it to ourselves. A d we are nowhere near The Golden Triangle.

MrsJBaptiste · 24/08/2020 06:48

God yes, West Yorkshire is just the roughest place ever!

So that will be why North Leeds, Horsforth, Chapel Allerton get mentioned on every single property thread when a poster is querying a move and West Yorkshire is mentioned...

Good point!

LilyLongJohn · 24/08/2020 06:56

North Nottinghamshire, some of the small villages around that area can be nice. Some are ex pit villages, some up and coming, some rough as arseholes tho. Have a look around the Sherwood Forest center parcs bit.

Bluesheep8 · 24/08/2020 07:05

Hull has its issues

As I've already said, parts of EVERYWHERE has it's issues. People need to go and actually look.

HigherFurtherFasterBaby · 24/08/2020 07:06

Another vote for Nottingham. Mapperly, Sherwood, Wollaton, Beeston, Gamston.

Probably other areas too but these are the ones I'm familiar with. Those are areas I would buy in, once I'm not a student Grin

Berry Hill has just had a mud slide on that Quarry estate, wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Avoid any ex pit towns in Nottingham, the one I grew up in is a total shit hole

Timpani · 24/08/2020 07:09

North East Coast. 5 bed. Large house. Decent garden. 2 reception rooms. Garage. 1 ensuite. 1 large bathroom. 1 downstairs loo. Less than 200k here. In a lovely, rural small town, walking distance to a beautiful beach.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2020 08:10

No, the person who thinks all of West Yorkshire is 'rough as fuck' actually lives here.

I'm wondering whether she's never actually left inner city Bradford, where she lives so isn't aware of the diversity of the county, or even more bizarrely, holds such high standards that she genuinely considers places like Ilkley, Adel, all the nice villages and small towns across the county etc to not be acceptably nice places to live.
