Just that really, I would like it to be in a nice area as well.
Is it even possible?

@Immigrantsong

OP where you can afford and where you would like to live are two very different things, so exercise caution.

Some of the places suggested are rough as fuck.

I can’t see any place listed on this thread that is universally 'rough as fuck'.
Immigrantsong · 23/08/2020 08:08

@BarbaraofSeville I don't want to offend people.

But some of the places suggested have a history of grooming, high antisocial behaviour incidents and are deprived areas. Some are also hubs of past racial issues around integration.

Northamptonshire and many areas have good rail links to London - Wellingborough, Corby, Kettering and surrounding villages

What do the teenagers think about making such a big move away from their friends and schools? I think you’d need a huge amount of buy in from them to make it work out well as it’s a tricky time in a child’s social development to make such a big move.

Yes, but those things have happened in isolated areas of the cities that are completely inconsequential to 99.9% of the people living in those cities, apart from something awful on the news. It doesn't make an entire city or county 'rough as fuck'.

No-one would say that all of London is rough as fuck just because there are some areas that do have gang and knife crime problems and exactly the same applies to other UK cities.

Cumbria (outside of the National Park)

@BarbaraofSeville I respectfully disagree. It's good to have different opinions, so that people do their research.

I live in one of the areas suggested here (named as a whole county) and it is truly rough as fuck.

I hope you are happy where you are, but I am not and wouldn't wish this in anyone.

OP avoid deprived areas or areas with issues named above.

East or West Midlands and in desirable areas

Jennygentle · 23/08/2020 08:39

Peterborough isn’t terribly appealing but its surrounding ‘rural’ suburbs and villages are lovely. It has fabulous transport links, too. You’d also be near Stamford, Cambridge and London.

morosetinkler · 23/08/2020 08:47

The midlands, Wales, east Anglia

Ok, which county in England is truly rough as fuck in its entirety?

Because even the counties that have well known social problems in some areas like West Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lancashire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Greater Manchester still have plenty of nice areas where a 3 bed house still costs around £200k.

The OP specified 'not a ghetto', she did not say she would only live in the most desirable post code in any particular area, as it is not necessary to do so to avoid 'rough as fuck'. There is a huge middle ground of perfectly pleasant available.

Jeremyironsnothing · 23/08/2020 08:59

Yes, tell us more of what the teens think about a move.

Vix20678 · 23/08/2020 08:59

Northamptonshire. Still only an hour by train into London as well!

I see from another thread that you live in West Yorkshire and so do I, in fact I live less than 10 miles from you and can categorically state that the entirety of West Yorkshire is not 'rough as fuck' or like inner city Bradford and there are many areas that are not rough at all and still have houses to suit the OPs budget.

You are missing the point.

Oldham has been suggested. It's been consistently voted as one of the worst towns in the UK.

West Yorkshire too has Bradford, home of the Bradford Riots...

A lot of the areas are cheap for a reason. Instead of trying to pick apart everything I say why not accept the fact that it is good for the OP to be cautious and do her research.

I didn't as an immigrant. I came over and chose to live in a cheap area as that is all I could afford. So what I am saying is from personal experience, so that others don't make my mistake. Deprived areas come with so many issues and are best avoided.

Where do you live btw? Where would you suggest? What do you have to offer as guidance to the OP, other than picking apart a stranger's posts.

@Shizzlestix

Notts, but I wouldn’t call it safe. My dh refused to transfer there due to the crime stats.
Eh? Huge rural parts of the county are very safe. Is he getting mixed up between the city and the county?
BarbaraofSeville · 23/08/2020 09:21

But not all of Oldham is rough and not all of Bradford is rough. You said the entire county of West Yorkshire was rough, when it's simply not.

Oldham includes Saddleworth and Greenfield which are nice rural villages with a good community feel. The OP isn't going to randomly buy the worst house in the poorest area of anywhere without doing some research and visiting the places she's looking at and with a healthy budget for the areas in question, she's going to find somewhere lovely without the risk of getting shot or abused the second she steps out of her front door.

Slightly over budget but she could get a small mortgage:

Lots of choice in Saddleworth, Oldham

Rural, nice village property on outskirts of Bradford.

Ah see I think both Oldham and Bradford are rough as fuck.
