Anyone fancy a bit of an overhaul before Christmas thread?

Helgathehairy · 20/08/2020 12:46

Please don’t throw me in the stocks for mentioning Christmas!!

During Covid everything has gone to pot a bit - I’ve put on weight, none of my clothes fit right, hair (and eyebrows) desperately need doing and I’m still a bit hesitant to go somewhere to do something so non-essential. Kids have been home constantly and Self-care & housework has become sporadic (at best!). I have elderly family members who are high risk that I’m helping and I’m wondering about exposure and contact and sometimes my mental health takes a bit of a battering due to demands from them. DH is working and we cut back spending well at the start (mostly due to me not going to the shops)but I’ve stated doing a bit more impulse shopping as shops opened and DHs job is connected to the travel industry and isn’t secure so I really need to stop. Next week my kids are back in school and I really want to get things more organised. I like a deadline to keep me on track.

Here’s my thinking - on Sunday it’s 100 days to 1st December. I really want to arrive at the start of December feeling more organised and less sluggish, calmer and just feeling more ME.

Previously Princessing threads have run on the Style & Beauty board but as this is more of a comprehensive overhaul I thought chat might be a better fit??

This is a previous PrIncessing thread for an idea, there have been lots more, including a pandemic one, but this one was started by me. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2458842-Countdown-to-Christmas-princessing

So anyone interested?

(I’m on my phone, which isn’t great for long threads so apologies if it’s a bit disjointed, I just wanted to just get it down.)

Good morning everyone! Well done on all your progress so far.

Got a busy day today. The hardest thing is being up before 11! Doing 12:8 is easy when you only get up at half 11.

My goal for day 99 is to begin clearing the spare (junk) room so that I can transport some clothes into there while I take down the wardrobe and paint the wall behind it. The rest of the day is tied up so as long as I can make a start on the spare room I'll be happy.

Also getting my haircut today!!! Never been this excited before but there's never been a 10 month gap in between appointments before.

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/08/2020 12:15

Sounds like everyone’s doing fab 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Hello all!

Everyone seems to be doing great!

Haven't actually done much myself today...but yesterday was quite productive.

I got rid of loads of clothes and shoes went through my wardrobe, storage bag of clothes, sock drawer etc. I've ordered some bamboo socks to see me through winter. My wardrobe is almost exactly as I want it now, which is exciting.

I also went through a huge box of paperwork and my toiletries drawer, binning things which are past it or used up.

We are hunting for bookshelves at the moment, to house all my books. This means I can move them out of DH's and my room, where they are stacked up against a wall at present. We do live like students sometimes Blush, but I have to say, it's only in our room. The kids have lovely rooms!

We are on staycation at the moment, so food maybe hasn't been what it should be, but I haven't pigged out. Yes, I may have had a yumyum, but that will be my 'lunch'. Haven't had any alcohol since last Thursday and feel quite good for it. Definitely getting more sleep.

I've treated myself to some fancy underwear as well, to cheer myself up a bit. That's quite exciting.

Going for a walk with family now and later, I'm going to do some strength training. Maybe with weights, or something else. Will peruse youtube.

Greatness21 · 24/08/2020 15:32

I'm in! Not in any particular order:

  1. Drink more water.
  2. Get hair styled.
  3. Organise A/W capsule wardrobe.
  4. Limit social media to once/twice a day for the rest of the year.
  5. Finish my book. One chapter a week. (Reading has really taken the back foot).
  6. Focus on my main goal daily.
  7. Eat more salad, fruit and vegetables with dinner.
  8. Paint living room wall.
  9. Sort out storage situation.
10. Cleanse and moisturise. 11. Make an effort to socialise - difficult to do in current situation. 12. Regular swimming. 13. Nuture core friendships. 14. Declutter home to essentials and things that 'spark joy'. 15. Plan holidays and days out for next year. 16. Do the stuff I've been putting off!!
MondeoFan · 24/08/2020 15:42
  1. Paint the lounge
  2. Sort the bathroom out properly including storage, maybe buy an under sink cupboard.
  3. Buy a nice rug
  4. Stock up on Winter Candles
  5. Overhaul clothes
  6. Get car serviced.
  7. Start buying presents and hiding them

So, I've taken the toddler out for a walk in the pushchair with stop off for a quick go on the swings. Did about 4 km. It's quite humid where we are, so I'm actually a bit sweaty after that! Shouldn't have worn jeans!

Also, we emptied the toy drawers in the playroom today, put bags of toys away to take to the tip for recycling. We can't just rock up to the tip at the moment though, due to covid, so we have booked for next weekend as it was the first available slot. Also did an under the sofa vacuum and floor wipe down. DH has gone to collect a bookcase, which we can have fun building this evening! So excited to be able to have a bookcase in my living room.

I love the look of all the lists on the thread. Might do one of those myself, as I think my goals are quite vague.

Rowgtfc72 · 24/08/2020 17:50

So today. Up at 330am for work ,half hour bike ride in, 8 hrs on my feet, half hour bike ride home.
I'm knackered. My arthritis in my collarbone is killing me. So I've had two pieces of garlic bread and a bag of fudge with my tea. Tiredness is my food trigger.
However, I've got off my fat bum and cut the grass and weeded the garden even though I'm not feeling the love.
I'm winning today.

LittleDoritt · 24/08/2020 18:01

Not having the best day today tbh but have taken my vitamin, ticked one thing off my anti-procrastination list and had some lovely one on one time with my daughter.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/08/2020 18:20

Quite proud of myself today because I went out for lunch to celebrate a family birthday and managed not to break my diet.
Also made a start on clearing out ds' room for some essential repair work that needs to be done asap.
Am keeping on top of housework, so all good here today

Helgathehairy · 24/08/2020 18:55

I'm on the wine already which isn't a good thing!

Today was really hard. DD3 went off to pre-school really happy and I got to spend some nice one-on-one time with DD7. But after I picked up DD3 it all went wrong, they were both really tired and DD7 was really rude and cheeky all day. DD3 is really shouty and has big tantrums when she doesn't get her own way so she spent a lot of the day screaming at me and DD7. Poor DH was shut in the bedroom trying to work.

It all culminated in DD7 losing a treat I'd told her she could have tomorrow resulting in an hour long meltdown. We've had a good chat now and she's calmed down but I'm dreading tomorrow when she discovers I'm sticking to my word and she's not getting her treat.

Anyway - anyone else watching the new series of Lucifer on Netflix? DH even admitted he's a very good looking man!

I’m off to an iffy start, didn’t even manage to read messages till now. Goals are, in no specific order:

Loose 1 stone by not eating junk during the week (I find this method works for me loosely followIng 16:8)
Maintain nails/feet/lashes and brows
Do my hair (ie don’t leave house with slept in scraped up hair)
Add in short daily abs workout, I’ve got into routine of 2 cardio sessions a week which is ok for now exercise wise
When at target weight buy and wear nice clothes not scruffy gym gear
Read the magazines I buy
Do Christmas shopping early
Get back to the organised mum method of housework

That’s it for now, plenty to get me started.

Cherrypi · 24/08/2020 19:29

I've done my 30 mins of tomm. Learnt some Welsh this morning. Had lots of fruit and veg today but did just stress eat some cake after doing daily homework with ds. Next for my run with my new sports bra and some reading.

WhistlersandJugglers · 24/08/2020 19:55

Day 99. House: Went to the glass recycling centre. Dusted and sorted out the high bookshelves in my living room that I can't reach so always miss in my weekly(ish) run around with a duster. Me: Ordered a nice sweatshirt and jogging bottoms online. Am job hunting so don't have much call for my nice clothes at the moment but all my very casual clothes are ancient and miserable looking.

didireallysaythat · 24/08/2020 20:12

I pulled out all the clothes to eBay later this week and took three things to the reclying bin in the village, getting my 10k steps in the mix.

Capsulate · 24/08/2020 20:29

@Helgathehairy that sounds like a challenging day! Hope you are having a stress free evening.

Here is my list

  1. declutter and organise the house - one 'extra' task per day, or more if I feel like it
  2. start gradual tanner body lotion
  3. more exercise; walking as much as possible, 2+ abs and strength training sessions per week
  4. no more than 10 units alcohol per week - aim for 5 most weeks, with 10 as an absolute maximum
  5. more water, fruit and veg and more 'proper' family meals. Less snacking instead of meals! More whole foods
  6. less internet and tv, more reading and board games with DH
  7. get started with new degree course
  8. sort out wardrobe - it isn't a capsule, but it isn't that far off. A few items in storage each season and then out again, could make it into a seasonal capsule..?
  9. daily tasks board for dcs and me - we did this in lockdown and it really helped us get through the day and feel as if we had achieved something
  10. brush up on language skills
RunningKatie · 24/08/2020 20:42

10k steps done.
Logged all food on mfp, gone over on calories but if I'd not logged it then it would have got worse!
Read my book.
Also did a couple of jobs off my list,
Kitchen is clean - a pp said they were doing that every night and I like the idea.
Kids and DH are in bed so I need to water the veggies, make a plan for tomorrow and sew a couple of name labels in uniform.

gassylady · 24/08/2020 21:22

Did my exercise, read my book, planned my food for work later in the week. @Cherrypi dw i’n dysgu Cymraeg hefyd! Noswaith dda

Cherrypi · 24/08/2020 21:38

@gassylady ha thanks. I think you're ahead of me. I had to look up the second sentence.

Monstermuncher · 24/08/2020 22:13

Hi everyone - here's my day 99. Got rid of some garden rubbish to the tip, there's still a lot of work to be done out there but it's looking better already. I found some Liz Earle hot cloth cleanser and used that this eve, the challenge will be to keep remembering to use it! Work was horrible today but I resisted the urge to drink wine tonight, I'm not going to try to be alcohol free but will aim for only drinking at the weekends for now.

Solongtoshort · 24/08/2020 22:47

Day 99 - Here l am again at 10.34 in bed wide awake but l suppose it might take a while and l suppose l can take this time to wind down.

Today l have cleared my garage, went to the tip and done a 5 k run, done 10200 steps.l am already for work tomorrow including my lunch.

I sold my travel system pram for £100, got £72 back in refunds on holiday clothes that didn’t get worn and now won’t as the kids go back next week.

I am in work tomorrow so l can’t do anything in regards to my house but l have taken pictures of things l can put on eBay. I am also going to have a pamper tomorrow night.

I feel so much better already, is it just me, well not better but pleased l have an aim.

Night all

Carriemac · 24/08/2020 22:58

7000 steps ( up a steep hill) and a swim in the sea!

Shallow07 · 24/08/2020 23:44

Hi, joining as in desperate need of an overhaul. Had DD in January and as much as I adore her am feeling like a neglected blobby mess. My body aches all the time, I'm about 4 stone overweight and I feel old and tired at only 31 Sad

So am going to start small:

  1. Meal plan (this week and next week sorted), around 1600 calories a day. Be realistic and don't do any mad crash diets
  2. Drink more water
  3. Charge the bloody Fitbit and try to do 10k steps a day (while trying not to feel bad that this is now hard but I used to do 25k and barely break a sweat...)
  4. Neat and tidy nails
  5. Pluck eyebrows weekly
  6. Cleanse and moisturise more often
  7. Go to bed when the baby does 1-2 nights a week
  8. Don't drink too often anyway but knock it on the head other than special occasions

Will check in once a week Smile. If I could lose a stone by Christmas and feel a bit less tired and achy that would be great.

Weepingwillows12 · 25/08/2020 06:21

I would like to join too please. I need to lose 3 to 4 stone. I put on a stone in lockdown and 2 stone in the previous year and it needs to do. I also want to;

Have a dry September and possibly dry rest of 2020,
Get my hair cut,
Clean all the windows and window sills.

Walkley18 · 25/08/2020 06:47

Well done @Solongtoshort. Have you tried listening to a podcast to get to sleep? I recommend BBC In Our Time. They are actually interesting but if you have it on just audible, the tone of three speakers talking together inevitably causes me to drift off. I did ok yesterday, nothing major as working and celebration meal out in evening but I didn't snack or have starters or pudding, so feel pleased about that. I actually go into the office today for first day in months so v excited!

IpanemaSunshine · 25/08/2020 07:17

Day 99, I tidied, cleaned and sorted out cupboards in the utility room and dusted off my bread maker which is going on today.

I finished a book and read one of the books on the yr6 reading list with ds.

Diet was better but I did have a glass of wine with dinner which is odd because I don’t usually drink in the week. Anyway, no wine rest of week!
