Anyone fancy a bit of an overhaul before Christmas thread?

Helgathehairy · 20/08/2020 12:46

Please don’t throw me in the stocks for mentioning Christmas!!

During Covid everything has gone to pot a bit - I’ve put on weight, none of my clothes fit right, hair (and eyebrows) desperately need doing and I’m still a bit hesitant to go somewhere to do something so non-essential. Kids have been home constantly and Self-care & housework has become sporadic (at best!). I have elderly family members who are high risk that I’m helping and I’m wondering about exposure and contact and sometimes my mental health takes a bit of a battering due to demands from them. DH is working and we cut back spending well at the start (mostly due to me not going to the shops)but I’ve stated doing a bit more impulse shopping as shops opened and DHs job is connected to the travel industry and isn’t secure so I really need to stop. Next week my kids are back in school and I really want to get things more organised. I like a deadline to keep me on track.

Here’s my thinking - on Sunday it’s 100 days to 1st December. I really want to arrive at the start of December feeling more organised and less sluggish, calmer and just feeling more ME.

Previously Princessing threads have run on the Style & Beauty board but as this is more of a comprehensive overhaul I thought chat might be a better fit??

This is a previous PrIncessing thread for an idea, there have been lots more, including a pandemic one, but this one was started by me. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2458842-Countdown-to-Christmas-princessing

So anyone interested?

(I’m on my phone, which isn’t great for long threads so apologies if it’s a bit disjointed, I just wanted to just get it down.)

Feeling excited day three to our christmas countdown. Yesterday was a success and realising now I need to take smaller goals that are achievable! The whole house will not be decluttered in a single day.

Today my aim is to play with my children a lot because they are going back to school soon so to lay out all of the games ready.

My own (smaller goals)
Jug of water with lemon and ice - to have finished the whole thing by the end of the day
Salads prepared already for the day already now in fridge
Pedicure is booked for this morning
Exercise for half an hour at least
Continue with no alcohol - this is my most important goal

I think I can do this!

Sportycustard · 25/08/2020 08:22

Day 99 was mixed. Everything went to plan until I found a bag of sweets and a zoom meeting overran and I ran out of time for a walk. Usually I would think 'stuff it' and go off the rails for days eating wise. Coming onto this thread is keeping me accountable though. Today is a new day so I will start afresh. Fasting breakfast works well for me and I managed to drink 2 litres of water yesterday. I roasted some cauliflower and baked some beetroot last night so that's lunch with goats cheese and salad. Healthy dinner tonight and there are no treats in the house. Meditation done this morning and yesterday so that's going well. Planning to empty the spare room this weekend and relocate my office in there temporarily so I can paint the office next week. Also going to book into the gym for next week. There's big Monday, Wednesday, Friday gang so I am planning to go Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday instead to avoid the peaks. Really nervous about going back but it's a small ladies only gym so I should be ok I hope.

TurnOffTheTv · 25/08/2020 08:43

Morning all.

10st 2 this morning so 1lb off

B- omelette
L- spinach and gruyere tart (going out for lunch)
D - lentil and halloumi salad that I didn’t have last night.

Going to the cinema this afternoon so will take an eat natural bar with me to have with a cuppa so o don’t buy snacks!

Just spent an hour clearing up my phone, old apps deleted/Facebook cull/emails sorted/ old Facebook and WhatsApp messages deleted and groups left that I don’t need anymore

Have a great day everyone!

IamShark · 25/08/2020 09:25

Day 99 was a fail.

I am nursing a bad hangover.

SquirrelFan · 25/08/2020 09:40

@Friendsoftheearth--Well done on the salad prep-got any recipes/tips?
@Helgathehairy--It was the second-least-expensive niacinamide at Boots! I haven't received it yet.

Trying to figure out how often to post-I think twice a week.
So far I've succeeded at:
Facial Masks
Mani/Pedi (I don't paint them, too high-maintenance. Just shaping and buffing. Also smooth feet.)
Taking vitamins
Exercise
Drinking more water/teas
Reading (Unnatural Causes by Shepherd-non-fiction by a forensic pathologist) Looking for recommendations!

Need to work on:
Wardrobe
More fruit and veg
Sleep (although by 11 not bad)
Making lists
Drinking!--But I have got a tip. DH likes a drink, and sucks me in with him. To avoid an outright refusal (which annoys him, I can tell) I have wine with dinner but only drink a few sips. Then I ask him if he wants the rest (always). This way I get the taste, but already am feeling better in the mornings.
Snacking--the crisps, the crisps...

Will try on work clothes today and attempt to repair some perfectly good except for buttons/hems/etc items.

Bonus: Did much-put-off gardening and feel better for it.

Two questions:
How do you get enough energy (mental, really) to do more than one thing a day? I'm looking at you, @IpanemaSunshine @Solongtoshort, among others!
How do you move from page to page on a Mumsnet thread without losing your comment-in-progress? I've lost mine twice now as I tried to check on who posted what.

Thanks again, @Helgathehairy-hope the rest of the week goes more smoothly!
Have a great week everybody!

IpanemaSunshine · 25/08/2020 10:31

@SquirrelFan the utility room was my one thing Smile I sat down for the rest of the day and read or closed my eyes. I’ve been diagnosed with post-viral fatigue and I’m not supposed do that much. I’m not exercising at the moment, hoping to get back to it in the autumn.

Today I’ve tidied the playroom and hoovered it, my teen dc helped. That’s it for me now, I’m resting until I make the dinner later.

IpanemaSunshine · 25/08/2020 10:33

Also I’m reading easier/shorter books as I have brain fog.

Hope everyone has a good day.

EastofEdna · 25/08/2020 12:21

I'm in. Day 98

We have not had a kitchen for 9 months - the builders were due back in March and the C-word scuppered that. We are now just finishing off so ready meals be gone. So now is the time to get house and me in some shape for that other C-word.

My goals are:

1 All the kitchen and bedroom stuff that has been decanted elsewhere to be back in there rightful places.
2 Pray that the gym/yoga studio stays open so I can continue with good exercise habits that have started over the past 3 weeks - 2 x gym sessions a week, 1 x yoga, 1 x spin, 1 x swimming.
3 Write/translate for 15 minutes every day

Progress
1: should be completed by this weekend. Then I will be able to have another decluttering goal.

  1. On track for this week, 1 x spin, 1 x gym - all done. Tomorrow is yoga, Thursday, gym again, Friday swim.
  2. Done for today; I am enjoying that 15 mins most out of my day, so it will be a pleasure to continue. (and it makes me feel the degree I never used was actually quite useful!)

Have a good day everyone.

DAY 98

OP posts:
Allthebubbles · 25/08/2020 12:28

I'm in, started 16:8 two weeks ago and am exercising but would like to feel more generally on tops of things.

beautifulshoes · 25/08/2020 12:33

Hope I'm not too late to join, great idea for a thread OP!

This is DC's first proper week at childminder after limited childcare since lockdown. Then next week DS starts school and DD preschool so I will have a few hours to myself every week (something I've been looking forward to since the end of my maternity leave two years ago!) I'm determined not to waste it!

So far today I've been for a walk, and labelled some of DS's schools things, I can't find his colouring pencils though so that's the impetus to sort out the shelf of doom in my walk in wardrobe. Lunch out with DH first though!

LittleDoritt · 25/08/2020 15:35

Have made the medical appointments I've been putting off for weeks, although they can't actually fit me in until October. Feel very virtuous now Grin

Solongtoshort · 25/08/2020 15:52

@SquirrelFan l only have 2 days off a week and l like instant gratification so I know if l aiming to do something l will get it done if l am thinking positively about it or want to achieve it. If l Had cleaning the oven on my list and that l was doing it l wouldn’t l would sit down all day and complain and find useless things to do. Plus l have to kids so if l am busy the leave me alone and go to dh instead. I am someone who needs to be busy otherwise my mental health suffers.

No help l know.

Deelish75 · 25/08/2020 16:06

I’m easing myself in slowly. DP is still on leave (we should have been on holiday this week) and the DS doesn’t go back to school until next week and it’s the week after next for DD.

Both DC had their haircuts ready for school, so glad that out of the way and next appt booked. We’ve started to declutter DS’s bedroom.

The rest of the week is carry decluttering and to bake a banana bread (Mary Berry’s) and freeze it for the McMillan Coffee morning end of Sept - school PTA have ran a successful one for the last few years.

Harpingon · 25/08/2020 16:21

I'm joining late..
Hope that's ok : )
My goals are,
16:8
Declutter, beginning with the draws full of paperwork.
Organize the office so that's it's not just a dumping ground. Then move on to the rest of the house.
Learn how to cook simple Mediterranean meals / cut back on ready meals.
No alcohol during the week.
Build a capsule wardrobe.
Fix leaking roof.

IamShark · 25/08/2020 16:50

Trying to get over my poor day yesterday.

I've done a bit of everything from my list, apart from weigh myself!

Roll on tomorrow.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 25/08/2020 18:35

Did yet another trip to the tip. Am happy today because I've been on my diet for nearly 3 weeks, my keto sticks finally arrived and I'm in ketosis.

Helgathehairy · 25/08/2020 19:13

Doing slightly better today but to be honest I can't wait for tomorrow. My 7 year old is going back to school. I am nervous about it but I she (and I) needs it. My youngest has settled back brilliantly to pre-school.

I have lunch done for both girls and they have their clothes out for the morning. Oldest has a uniform so that's easy but youngest has very definite ideas about what she wants to wear - and, as long as it's weather appropriate and not torn, I'm pretty easy going.

OP posts:
beautifulshoes · 25/08/2020 19:18

Well done @MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously!

Got my shelf of doom tidied up, turned out it wasn't too much work at all once I did it. Made a yummy lasagne for dinner with lots left over for Thursday (busy evening).

Rowgtfc72 · 25/08/2020 19:30

Day 98
Cleared the spare room floor, put stuff in the loft.
Not snacked and am drinking water.
Small thingsSmile

To all those who like me had a little stutter yesterday, tomorrow is a new day.

OverTheRainbow88 · 25/08/2020 20:28

Had quite a good declutter of the attic today... then had 2 ice creams on the beach, oops! ... resisted a Mac Donald’s drive thru on the way home though!!!

mum2jakie · 25/08/2020 20:53

Day 98:
Working day. Took a packed lunch to work and prepped a lunch for tomorrow. Vitamins taken.
House - bedroom windows cleaned.

WhistlersandJugglers · 25/08/2020 20:56

Day 98: Helped DS clean his room. That doesn't sound like much but he's been hibernating in there all lockdown so it was a major task. Got out for a walk and going to do 15 minute workout soon. I'm majorly failing at 16:8 at the moment but think it'll be easier when school is fully back.

Allmyfavouritepeople · 25/08/2020 20:58

I didn't have anything specific on my list to do today. Done well on my intermittent fasting. Woke up at 10am and didnt eat until past 12. Tomorrow I have to wake up at half 9. Easing myself back into early mornings before work next week!

Tomorrow my dad is coming over to he a handy man so that'll tick off lots of house things.
