Words that rhyme in your accent

Just said to DS

Count down from 10
Then count back up again

Which rhymed. Then I said it again and it didn't. Which made me think about the nightmare of writing rhyming books for children and the whole giraffe/scarf thing which defiantly doesn't work in my accent.

Also ftr I'm team:
My scone
Is alone
He likes to moan
But it lets his hone
His sculpting of bone.

God I hate teaching my kid phonics
Roll on September

We have the ‘Duck in a Truck’ book and I can’t make ‘strain’ rhyme with ‘again’ (uh-gehn).

I’m in Ireland, Dublin, and I say ‘nyooze’ but the radio announcers say ‘and now for the 6 o’clock noooze.’

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2020 23:13

strain’ rhyme with ‘again’ (uh-gehn).
Str ay n
A gay n

When we teach phonics, we would segment both finger and singer the same e.g. s-i-ng-er and f-i-ng-er. I think that's why I can't separate them.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/08/2020 08:55

If I go traditional,
don't and won't rhymes with go
aren't rhymes with stay
Going rhymes with brewing

I reckon it's :
S i ng - er
F i ng - g er

So they rhyme, but only on the last sound, not from the i.

I wonder if there are any accents where girrafe doesn't rhyme with laugh.

I can just about work out going/brewing (if you say goo-ing) but not the others.

@CaptainMyCaptain
I think that OP is Black Country so in Black Country 'spake'
Won't is said as 'woh'
Don't as 'doh'
And aren't as 'ay'

I live west mids but a bit outside of the Birmingham or Black Country areas so my accent not so pronounced

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/08/2020 12:14

Thank you I'm not very familiar with that accent.

daisychain1620 · 19/08/2020 14:21

Here a shower or power rhymes with car and a mirror rhymes with a fur.

catzrulz · 19/08/2020 14:30

Heartofglass12345 · 19/08/2020 15:22

Heulog I was coming to say the same
Here, year and ear are all pronounced yer in South Wales lol. We say tuth instead of tooth too.
My husband is from the valleys and he says road, and boat the same way as board whereas I say road the same as rode and boat like bote and I only grew up 40 minutes away from him lol
He also pronounces hall and hole the same which confused my son for a while as he kept calling the hall the hole lol

Louisainlockdown · 19/08/2020 15:24

CAR rhymes with SHOWER and POWER
Anyone guess where I'm from? Lol

Louisainlockdown · 19/08/2020 15:25

@daisychain1620
Lol cross post!

DDemelza · 19/08/2020 15:27

This is why poets from New Zealand have such an unfair advantage. We have no distinct vowels and everything rhymes.

frustrationcentral · 19/08/2020 15:41

I have a weird accent as I grew up in the north but have been very south for my adult life so I think it's quite mixed

Scone - Gone
Giraffe- Laugh- bath - all short a sounds
Tongue - Lung

I drop a lot of letters so half is haff, isn't it is int it.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/08/2020 17:16

N Ireland?? My friend says mirror like that. First time she asked for a mirror it genuinely took us 10 minutes of total confusion.

@SleepingStandingUp yes how did you guess lol! I was in Liverpool visiting some friends last year and was telling them that I loved watching Power on Netflix, they'd never heard of it and I took a while for me to realise to them it sounded like Par!

SleepingStandingUp · 19/08/2020 20:45
