Words that rhyme in your accent

Just said to DS

Count down from 10
Then count back up again

Which rhymed. Then I said it again and it didn't. Which made me think about the nightmare of writing rhyming books for children and the whole giraffe/scarf thing which defiantly doesn't work in my accent.

Also ftr I'm team:
My scone
Is alone
He likes to moan
But it lets his hone
His sculpting of bone.

God I hate teaching my kid phonics
Roll on September

That's just blown my Midlands brain.

Grin I love the English language and its regional variations.

FreezerBird · 18/08/2020 13:29

Also, tongues rhymes with songs (I blame Isaac Watts)

I think it's quite possible that when Watts was writing they did rhyme.

FreezerBird · 18/08/2020 13:30

(I mean, at that time they rhymed for most English speakers, whereas now it's an accent thing.)

Yesyoudoknowme · 18/08/2020 13:31

I have moved around a lot - but always the south of England (furthest north was near Bedford) and this has caused me no end of issues! I used to write slogans for competitions, and I write humorous verse. Difficult. Finger and singer definitely don't rhyme - as a PP said, you don't pronounce the g in singer. Giraffe - ji-rarf with scarf, Barth, parth, larf not bath- path- laff. Book and look - difficult to describe but more of a uk sound than an oooh sound. Battery - battery, but (and this is very outing) how about garage? Everyone seems to call it a garij. I call it a ga-rahj. (Not a ga raaaahj though) drives me nuts...

NannyR · 18/08/2020 13:33

I'm from Yorkshire and singer and finger don't rhyme to me. Finger and linger have a hard G in the middle, singer has a much softer, hardly even there G sound, same in hanger.

CarlottaValdez · 18/08/2020 13:33

Do you say you’re putting the car in for a service at the ga-rahj?

picklemewalnuts · 18/08/2020 13:34

Sing uh
Fing guh

Does that help?

In sing and thing and wing the g is a swallowed sound on the end.

In Finger you get the swallowed g on the end of fing (Like fling) and then a guh sound on the end as well.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2020 13:34

Also, tongues rhymes with songs
Tongue rhymes with sung or song. That's just pleased me no end. Did I mention I'm home alone with lots of kids 🤣🤣

Book and look don't they rhyme in most places? Even say Stoke when it's b uh k not b u k is l uh k not l u k

What a great thread.

I pronounce tennis “court” and I “caught” the ball exactly the same.

And exH reckons the way I say “Mars Bar” sounds like “Muzzbuh”.

He’s probably right Grin My accent doesn’t do rhotic ‘r’s.

Towel, owl, Cowell, all rhyme. And foul and fowl sound the same. Scone rhymes with on.

Palavah · 18/08/2020 13:41

Garage, damage, (Nigel) Farage.

Who doesn't rhyme Owl and Towel??

Inthebleakmidwinteriwouldsing · 18/08/2020 13:41

Yy to calf laugh half. And barf.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2020 13:43

Garage, damage, (Nigel) Farage.
Gar ij
Dam ij
fa rah j

I might call him Nigel Farij from now on

To me owl and towel don't rhyme

Owl = Owwwl (1 syllable)
Towel = Toww-ull (2 syllables)

I'm in Leicester

Palavah · 18/08/2020 13:46

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/08/2020 13:50

@LovelyWeekAway

Carl And Barrel

( the Scottish pronunciation of the mans name Carl sounds like Carol Grin)
All those rolling R’s

That reminds me of almost all of the cast of TWD taking the mick out of Andrew Lincoln every time he shouts for Carl. Corrrral, Cooooorrrraaaaallll! Corrrraaaalll!
Watercoloursky · 18/08/2020 13:53

My other half rhymes when he says 'fairly' and 'early'...

JemIsMyNameNooneElseIsTheSame · 18/08/2020 13:55

Sorry I meant 'hare' and 'hear/here'!
