I didn't even know they did tinned burgers! So that's another thing I've never bought. Tinned hotdogs I have, for the beavers 'campfire'.

HaudMaDug · 17/08/2020 12:22

Potatoes and Beef.
Live next to potato fields and farmer gives me a big bag a couple of times of year for looking after this gates. He also butchers his own beef cattle which are delicious. Eyeing up my Xmas dinner wandering around the field outside just now.

bookmum08 · 17/08/2020 12:22

Ok I looked at the tinned burger pictures.
They don't look nice at all. But I eat Pot Noodles so what do I know??

Tinned burgers look like dog food and taste like I would imagine dog food does too. I haven't had them since I was a nipper but have to say I'm partial to a tin of all day breakfast every now and again, unidentifiable meat products and all.

ChavvySexPond · 17/08/2020 12:29

Anything with palm oil in it, or artificial sweeteners.

Microwave burgers. Confused

Livpool · 17/08/2020 12:46

What is wrong with Iceland?!

We get loads of frozen veg and fruit. And pizza

HepzibahGreen · 17/08/2020 12:49

Lard - whyyyy
Basting chicken to make crispy skin?
Also, pie crust. Lots of things. It's very versatile and useful for some things.

I want to know, all those people who don't buy biscuits or cake...what do you do if you get visitors and you can't offer them a biscuit or a bit of cake with their tea??
My mother would disown me!

user1471523870 · 17/08/2020 12:53

Tinned food in general.
Frozen chips.

boltzmannbrains · 17/08/2020 13:00

^ I keep a well-stocked biscuit/snack cupboard, but I'm the only one who ever eats them. I very rarely have visitors because I live in London where 'drop ins' tend to be less common (villages and smaller suburbs tend to have more of a drop-in culture than major cities, because of the distances involved).

The majority of my friends are either vegan or gluten-free, so wouldn't eat most of what I keep in the house. When they visit (which is rare since usually we'd meet in a bar or coffee shop somewhere central) I buy in special food to accommodate them.

I don't think I've ever had anyone drop in for tea.

therhubarbbrothers · 17/08/2020 13:04

Basting chicken to make crispy skin?

I do that with a bit of sesame or chilli oil, it's lovely.

florascotia2 · 17/08/2020 13:09

Iceland frozen raspberries are cheap and very good; they do lots of other frozen fruits and veg also, often at bargain prices. Also - at least, the one I know in Glasgow - big packs of good potatoes, apples etc.

As previous posters have said, frozen fruit/fish/veg are much fresher and of better nutritional quality than many supermarket-counter fruit and veg.

LeSquigh · 17/08/2020 13:10

No fabric conditioner here either, its completely pointless (and I live in a very hard water area).

No ready meals or ready made pasta sauces. I am LAZY, but even I draw the line at those.

therhubarbbrothers · 17/08/2020 13:12

'Superiority signalling', yes it's exactly that. Made even more ridiculous that it's obvious that half the replies are from people who've never been anywhere near Iceland etc.

How is it superiority signalling? You presumably shop at an Iceland and think it is inferior to other food shops or you wouldn't be claiming that those of us who have never been there are signalling that we are superior as how would we know if it was inferior? We only know it's seen as inferior because people who shop there are telling us we are being superior by saying we don't shop there. As people who do shop there clearly think it's inferior then why would I decide to try shopping there?

As for Spain, no I haven't been there on holiday. I prefer off the beaten track kind of places. Like rural Iceland Grin

Megan2018 · 17/08/2020 13:14

I love fabric softener-clothes without it are horrible even when line dried. I don’t use it on baby DD’s clothes and they are markedly harder and more creased and I refuse to iron clothes.

Jeremyironsnothing · 17/08/2020 13:16

No other brands of ketchup, beans and salad cream. Must be Heinz.

AuntyPasta · 17/08/2020 13:18

Milk
Meat
Soup
Cereal (Except for porridge oats)
Jarred sauces

AuntyPasta · 17/08/2020 13:18

And fabric softener. Vile, stinky stuff.

boltzmannbrains · 17/08/2020 13:19

Have you ever been to Aldi? Doesn't sound like it based on that comment.

My comment and the comments I was responding to were primarily about Iceland.

Like I said, I haven't shopped in those supermarkets because there are none where I live. The nearest Aldi that I know of is about an hour away. I've been into an Iceland once during the initial lockdown shortage (again, this is simply due to not having one nearby) but I do semi-regularly shop in Lidl - Lidl is fine and there are some great bargains, but it doesn't sell everything I need.

There's a difference between what a supermarket actually sells, and the media image of what that supermarket sells. My comment was about Iceland, Iceland's TV commercials (or at least their most well-known TV commercials) emphasise their pre-prepared frozen goods over their fresh produce because frozen food is Iceland's USP. I buy frozen veg, but personally I don't tend to buy ready meals or pre-prepared food because I enjoy cooking from scratch, so there's simply no reason why I would search out an Iceland. Considering the advertising and locations, it's not surprising that a forum like Mumsnet (which tends to skew middle class/upper middle class) is full of people who have never been inside one and thus have an inaccurate perception of what those supermarkets sell.

alula · 17/08/2020 13:21

Alcohol
Tinned meat
Tinned veg
Frozen meat

HarrietM87 · 17/08/2020 13:22

The frozen fruit and vegetables in Iceland are excellent. I wouldn’t buy eg frozen ready meals but people writing off an entire shop (Id guess based on misconceptions) are losing out!

We try to avoid buying anything processed, and don’t really buy much meat these days.

ChocAuVin · 17/08/2020 13:23

Kitchen roll
Squashes, cordials, juices

MrDarcysMa · 17/08/2020 13:25

Ready meals (don't have a microwave)
Sugary cereal
Biscuits (would eat the lot immediately)
Alcohol (but as and when needed from corner shop)
