I’m watching Four Weddings and a Funeral for the first time

I know it’s a classic but somehow I’ve never watched it.
So I’m about an hour in and I just wanna get this straight ..

Carrie meets Charles. They sleep together. Charles finds out she’s in fact engaged and meets her fiancé. They sleep together again. And then she takes him with her to pick out a wedding dress .. that’s as far as I’m up to

What is happening here Confused I thought these two were one of the most iconic and popular couples in romcom history I had no idea this is how the relationship started 😂😂

She’s not engaged the first time they meet if that makes it any better.

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/08/2020 21:19

She’s single when they meet.

It’s a corker. Apart from the notorious rain line at the end Grin

Dunno where you got that idea, she's an absolute knob end Grin

katy1213 · 14/08/2020 21:24

For a romantic heroine, she's a real slapper - and I even thought that back in the day! I only hope he didn't pick up a dose of something nasty!

CodenameVillanelle · 14/08/2020 21:25

I think they are meant to be star crossed lovers or something...always just missing their moment...but she is a right cow!

Ohh I must have gotten distracted (I admit I’m not enjoying it as much as I thought so I’m not paying full attention) What’s the timeline between when they first met and when she tells him they’re engaged?? Is it meant to be a few months I hadn’t registered it was so long

Have you hankies ready?

june2007 · 14/08/2020 21:27

Unfortunately Charlotte the actress who plyed Charles sister passed away not that long after. Aged 28. (Whats, bonking? well it,s a bit like tennis but the balls are smaller.")

Yeah and I completely understand that. One of my fav romcoms is Imagine Me and You (not very well known but extremely underrated imo !!) a lady who just got married falls completely in love with someone else and they do ultimately end up together. You feel for the husband but it’s also very sweet and genuine and I don’t know, just a totally different vibe. Fully appreciate we can’t chose who we fall in love with and when but this just feels totally off. Was she written as an awful character?! I mean was that writers intention for her to be incredibly unlikeable because I am baffled as to how she could be seen as anything else

Yes I remember hearing this! really tragic

They’re not an iconic couple. Nobody likes her. Everybody loves scarlet and duckface and the John hanna character. It’s much more about friendship than about the romance. That’s kind of the point.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/08/2020 21:31

I found it very over rated, personally.
It was one of those films and still is by the replies that you had to say ‘you liked it’

GlummyMcGlummerson · 14/08/2020 21:32

It's aged very badly. And Andi MacDowall was woefully miscast, no chemistry with Hugh Grant, wooden performance and comes across as a total bitch

I clearly see now I got completely the wrong end of the stick. I’ve seen the “is it raining” scene so many times and just assumed they were a really loved couple. Going into watching this what that idea in mind has certainly made the experience interesting

Enjoy Four Weddings it is about 100 times better than any other Richard Curtis offering.

It also has one of my most favourite ever movie moments in it. Kristen Scott Thomas is sitting next to an older woman at a wedding. Older woman asks her a question. Look on KST's face and the acerbic comment she makes in reply are absolutely priceless.

Yes this is what I can’t figure out. Is she meant to be totally unlikeable? I can’t imagine the writers had that intention. There’s some lovely films/ books about couples who are in a way destined to be together but are with someone else. And the audience ends up rooting for them to somehow ge together. But this is definitely not that. But I wonder if someone else had played her if the vibe would be completely different

Meganplays · 14/08/2020 21:36

She certainly isn’t a typical female lead, but I liked her for it. She was independent, sexually confident and free. Unapologetic for her behaviour.

Goyle · 14/08/2020 21:36

I loved it back in the 90s but watching it now makes me cringe a bit. Duckface is the best character in it.

I didn't know that, just googled it, so sad she was brilliant.
Meganplays · 14/08/2020 21:41

There’s so many brilliant bits in it. Vomiting Veronica and Miss Piggy. It’s my favourite Hugh Grant film.

frugalkitty · 14/08/2020 21:41

I watched it in the cinema when it first came out....it was the first film I watched where the whole cinema was actually laughing out loud. It's a classic. End of.

SummerNamechangeHappened · 14/08/2020 21:41

Yeah @BlueThursday so 😢😢😢

frugalkitty · 14/08/2020 21:42

"Scarlett, you're blind.....she looks like a big meringue"

I agree it has some very funny bits but I think I might have built it up a bit too much in my head. I’ve had a couple of laugh out loud moments but have to say I remember crying with laughter the first time I watched Bridget Jones. Perhaps this says something unflattering about my sense of humour 😅
