Lose a stone in 21 days - is anyone watching?

It just seems like a shameless plug to make Michael Mosley money.

Lots of chat without science "this is good for your erm mental and physical health". Weird comments including that how long you can stand on 1 leg with your eyes shut is reflective of your life expectancy. Showing off how many push ups he can do. And getting his whole family in on it. I usually enjoy programmes like this but not sure about this one.

Anyone else?

he didn't answer many questions and told people to buy his book

Don't forget the £100 membership to his 800 club. And then the further cost of buying the meal repalacement shakes. And the special diary to write your meals down in. And the special cup to prepare your shakes in. ker-ching Grin

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 13/08/2020 08:58

Oh blimey! I didn't realise he was branding as much as that Hmm

showmethegin · 13/08/2020 09:03

I'm doing this diet at the moment, about 2 weeks in and I've lost nearly 9 pounds so it does work. I have fallen off the wagon a couple of times during that time (and got right back on again) so I'm sure without that I'd have lost more.

I also intermittent fast. I only eat now between 12 and 8 and I feel great. Had a few headaches the first week but honestly I feel better already (and I still have over a stone to lose)

showmethegin · 13/08/2020 09:04

And you don't have to buy all that stuff. I have the recipe book because I like recipe books and there are some great things in there but that's it. No membership, mercy etc!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 13/08/2020 09:06

Does the recipe book have pictures?

diddl · 13/08/2020 09:10

@Cheeseandlobster

If that's indicative of life expectancy then I am screwed Shock
Me too!
Leflic · 13/08/2020 09:13

@goingtotown

The programme needs a health warning, 800 calories a day is not healthy. The group will lose weight but put it back on quickly.
Well anyone going back to eating 3000 calories a day would. But actually once you get used to eating less it tends to make you more mindful long term. I found it much slower to put weight on with this one and I certainly haven’t hone back to my fat weight from 7 years ago.
hungrypenguin · 13/08/2020 09:13

Did you see the size of his house? It's a palatial mansion. I agree he seems to be all about making money. He piggy-backed off others' research ( I seem to remember) to create the 5:2 diet. And rushed out hastily written books on that and the Blood Sugar Diet. By involving his family in the way he does in this program, it feels like he's trying to create high profiles/future jobs on TV for his son who features prominently . He's already rushed out a book on Corona virus! Ker-ching! And now he's cashing in on people's fears about Covid and being overweight ! Ker-ching! This thread should really be on AIBU. He's shameless. And who eats a banana with a fork? Hmm

CoatTails · 13/08/2020 09:15

I bought the mushrooms but forgot how to make the pizzas! 😂What was the recipe, please?

Longtalljosie · 13/08/2020 09:15

As a total sugar addict I don’t think he’s saying bananas aren’t excellent for you - rather that in order to reset the body from big sugar highs you need very low sugar food, especially at first.

I’m a fan of his. He has more science on his side these days than the NHS’s high-carb, low-fat approach. And if you read his books the stats on rapid weight loss aren’t what you’d think.

RaggieDolls · 13/08/2020 09:22

I'm going to try it from September. I was doing really well on weight watchers until lockdown hit. I'd gone from a BMI of 30 to 26 albeit it was very slow losing.

I've put on 10lb and I know it will take me until end October / beginning of November to lose that and get back where I started. It's sole destroying even if it is my own fault so I'm thinking if it can get close to blitzing the 10lb in 21 days I can go back to the 1lb a week I was happy with on WW.

AnotherEnigma · 13/08/2020 09:24

@MsWoodentop

Bananas are really sugary

It really isn't as simple as that. Banana contain vitamins, minerals (particularly potassium) and fibre. There's nothing wrong with eating bananas, it's very different from eating a spoonful of sugar.

It really isn't any different to eating a spoonful of sugar, or 6 teaspoons of sugar, which is the approximate equivalent in every banana.

All nutrition that a banana contains can be found in other foods.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 13/08/2020 09:24

I'm currently on weight watchers and calculated that I'm given 800 calories for the day with fruit, veg, eggs and fish in top. I've lost a stone so far but it took over 2 months. Nothing else was working for me especially in lockdown. If be interested to watch this show

lborgia · 13/08/2020 09:37

Omg, the whinging!

1st, he will have a bank of people presenting him with ideas. The publisher will be wanting a book on covid, and who better to write it than a medical journalist already in their stable of authors?

Second, he's been doing this for 20 odd years, and his wife is a doctor, so why on earth should they live in a suburban semi (unless that's their highest aspiration), and he had been selling books globally. It adds up to a decent amount of money.

He will have a marketing or branding director at the very least, telling him what can be sold as spin offs, and for some people having a shake to drink will be the best way to wean themselves off the crap that most of us eat. I've no idea what they taste like, but why the hell shouldn't he make the most of his name?

I have never really warmed to him, but he has brought Roy Taylor's work to the masses, and for that I'm grateful.

If you take time read his papers, there are strong links between the 800 calorie approach, and lowering markers in chronic disease.

Yes he's become ubiquitous, but that happens to all sorts on the TV. There are loads of people who seem to be in every drama etc. for a few years, and frankly I don't blame them for making hay. They might irritate, but they're working full time, and making the most of it. He's not actually a doctor, so he's not even guilty of cashing in when he should be healing the sick for a salary of sixpence...

I would find the programme much more useful if they had a vegetarian or vegan in the group. It would be great to have some ideas for high protein/low carb vegetarian (or preferably vegan) meals, rather than all the eggs and salmon!

DishingOutDone · 13/08/2020 10:04

I want a programme dedicated to the Baileys and Galaxy diet mentioned above by @MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously.

Mind you, are evil bananas the new Galaxy?

Leflic · 13/08/2020 10:27

The diet is meant for obese and overweight people who need to lose fat from their core. It’s quite specific.

No one is saying bananas are evil. They are incompatible with a low sugar diet for chubbsters who are likely to get diabetes and other serious health conditions.

I don’t think it works for vegans or vegetarians although I do know some low carbing vegetarians. There’s a lot of cheese, cauliflower and coconut flour involved. I’ve never seen a vegan that looked anything approaching fat.

theneverendinglaundry · 13/08/2020 10:30

Yes, more vegetarian and vegan ideas would be great. Mind you i feel that way about most programmes on tv that involve food! It's all meat, meat, meat.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/08/2020 11:15

CoatTails for 4 mushrooms I used 4 tablespoons of tomato puree, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, some dried oregano, a clove of crushed garlic mixed and put on top, then topped with grated mozzarella and baked for 15 mins.
I think you could add whatever you liked and change it according to what you prefer, so long as it's low carb.

outwest · 13/08/2020 11:20

Have been eating this way since early May 2020. Started by buying the recipe book only - many free resources available online. Key issue is that food has been filling and tasty, so has been easy to stick to the plan. Is not a vegetarian diet, but includes quite a few veg dishes, which have enjoyed more than I expected.

As of 13 August have lost 19kg (3 stone) and am pretty much at goal weight. First "commercial" diet I've ever done, has been a revelation. Obviously will be hard to maintain weight unless this experience results in longer term change in my approach to eating, but quietly optimistic. Don't plan to return to the way I ate previously; let's see how it goes.

Mosley is opinionated, but hard not to have strong views if you have confidence in your conclusions. Think he genuinely believes this approach can effect massive positive change, so naturally wants to convert people to it. If he were diffident and sounded like he lacked confidence he would convince fewer listeners.

Hammer12 · 13/08/2020 11:24

What I found frustrating is that he showed what normal overweight people eat in a day which included biscuits and cake and said they were unhealthy - I am overweight and do not eat biscuits and cake and know to avoid these types of food. It annoys me that overweight people are portrayed as eating junk food when most of the overweight people I know don't.

One person drank half a bottle of wine a day and had takeaways regularly - of course he is going to lose weight by simply cutting these things out so I'm not sure why he is doing 800kcals and being so restrictive.

My worry is that these diets which say don't eat bananas etc are what is causing rising obesity levels. I do not eat 'unhealthy' food but I am still overweight so I am doing something wrong but all the contradictive information is so confusing. I am currently doing low carb but my friend is doing SW and they literally say to do the complete opposites of each other.

Leflic · 13/08/2020 11:30

It’s not a diet to lose pounds to look better though. The point of this diet is that your core fat levels ( fat around your organs), your blood sugar and the fat in your blood improves.

Reedwarbler · 13/08/2020 11:31

I turned off shortly into the first episode. I may be heartless, but I find it really irritating when women are interviewed and they get tearful. He (or his wife) was talking to one of the group and she just started blubbing. Why? Fgs, get a bloody grip. It's just so pathetic. You're overweight, not dying or bloody bereaved.
Also, the whole thing is just a massive advertisement for his diet books and his wife's (800 calorie) diet recipe books. They must be coining it in.
Not a fan.

gassylady · 13/08/2020 11:32

There is a lot of good science behind it try reading “Life without Diabetes” by Dr Roy Taylor. Dr Taylor is a practising specialist in diabetes in the North East and has a strong research background in this field. NHS is now starting to adopt this approach. All profits from Dr Taylor’s book he is donating to the charity Diabetes UK.
Now I actually need to reread it myself and actually do it!Blush

Yes I understand this but if his current diet is 3000kcals and he cut this to 2000/1500Kcals by cutting out junk and eating healthily, would that not be improving all those things and be more of a long term solution?
