Stonehaven train derailment

Anyone else watching? We live about 40 miles north . Can’t quite believe it . My parents used to live in the fields directly above Carmont signal station about 35 years ago and remember the weather causing problems for the line even back then . Very, very steep hills on both sides .

Looks very bad from what’s being said online/on rolling news . Fields are just packed with emergency vehicles/choppers . Just horrific .

@LoveLastMinutesAndLostEvenings

Terrible. Is this the stretch where Network Rail posted the video of the flooding? Why on earth were trains still running?

The train ran down the line, the problem was discovered and the train was sent back up towards Aberdeen and onto the opposite track, the incident took place on the way back up.

@blacktop

Can you have the title edited? This didn't happen in Aberdeen. It was south of Stonehaven which is a good 20 miles away from Aberdeen.
I’ll ask MN yes - thought if I wrote Carmont signal station/Drumlithie/Stonehaven most people would have zero idea where I meant ! Will report and ask though Flowers

No worries - me too . I get that Glasgow QS train a lot ... We know people involved (on NHS/police side) . Just one of these things you never imagine happening . When NHSG announced respite centre at the church for relatives - it just doesn’t bear thinking about . Can’t believe it . FlowersFlowersFlowers

The fact that we have had no reassurance or otherwise after all these hours is terrifying Sad

I fee for everyone involved, and the emergency services, what a horrific day

itsgettingweird · 12/08/2020 16:05

I've recently read that pre pandemic 1300 people would normally be on that train Shock

PerkingFaintly · 12/08/2020 16:08

One of the ghastly things with a train accident is there's usually no definitive list of people on board.

Given everything known so far about the nature of the accident, the difficult location, and the fire, it's likely to be grim establishing that they've found everyone.

Flowers to all those with family involved one way or another.

blacktop · 12/08/2020 16:09

Vast over estimate there

RJnomore1 · 12/08/2020 16:11

I lived in Stonehaven for a few years and regularly travelled that line, plus DH now works on the trains, what an awful thing to happen.

RJnomore1 · 12/08/2020 16:12

1300 might be per day not train.

lyralalala · 12/08/2020 16:15

It'll be extra difficult to work out how many are on board, and who they are, because there's much less ticket checking atm. Quite a few stations just have their barriers open to top people touching them (I don't even know how easy it is to calculate from that anyway)

lyralalala · 12/08/2020 16:16

1300 is massively over the number of people. It's a 6 car train so 4 or 5 passenger cars. Even with 5 that would be 260 people per carriage. there's no way it would be that many.

Nicolastuffedone · 12/08/2020 16:17

3 dead 1 missing the last time I looked.......horrible tragedy

Ghislainedefeligonde · 12/08/2020 16:18

Yes hopefully trains lot quieter esp with local lockdown in Aberdeen just now. My friends dh would normally be on that train but is working from home thank god

lyralalala · 12/08/2020 16:20

BTP have just confirmed three deaths, including the driver, and six people are in hospital on the news.

The six people in hospital are said to be not life threatening.

lyralalala · 12/08/2020 16:20

They've also said they believe from CCTV that all passengers have been accounted for, but once the area is made safe a full search will be carried out to make sure.

Quite. 4 carriages, one of those being first/buffet so with much lower capacity - 260 seated is a much more realistic figure. Even with standing it would have been nowhere near half of that 1300 figure!

blacktop · 12/08/2020 16:27

No sorry that's not right, I misread you. It wouldn't be 260 per carriage it would be 260 per train

It was only 4 coaches, so assuming full (say 100 per carriage incl some standers), that's only 400 - nowhere near 1300.
lyralalala · 12/08/2020 16:37

There are pictures being shown on the news now and it's shocking.

If that train had been busy there would have been a lot of deaths.

Awful.

itsgettingweird · 12/08/2020 17:04

Even 250 odd is loads but that did seem like a lot!

Well one was too many today Sad

PearPickingPorky · 12/08/2020 17:05

It's just so awful. I can't even look at the photos.

lyralalala · 12/08/2020 17:08

It's just so awful.

Thankfully the combination of pandemic, lockdown and weather made it such an empty train. It doesn't bare thinking about how bad it would have been if it was full of the normal number commuters, rig workers, holiday makers etc.

Ghislainedefeligonde · 12/08/2020 17:14

Yes esp the local lockdown which I’m sure will have saved many more injuries and loss of lives. Absolutely tragic for those who were involved nevertheless

Horehound · 12/08/2020 17:19

I've only seems tiny snippet on FB so I need to go look. I used to go to school in Aberdeen and lived in Montrose so past it twice a day everyday for 5 years. I know exactly the bit you mean just from your op. Not good at all
