Dog owners/walkers-how do you feel about picking up poo?

HillyJilly · 10/08/2020 09:08

I mean just that. To clarify I've only maybe once or twice failed to pick up after mine, in decades of dog owning. I always do it unless I really can't*. I hear other people who own dogs saying they really don't mind, It's nothing doesn't bother them. I have to admit I really dislike doing it although I do it. It grosses me out. I breathe in and hold my breath while I do it Grin
My ex who co owns the dog with me doesn't mind one bit.
Does it bother you doing it?
*once she did it on a very busy road. I almost got run over. I hung about waiting for a gap in the traffic that didn't happen or at least not before the poo had more or less disappeared.
Another time she was off leash and I'm sure she did it but it was dark and in a very overgrown area. Couldn't find it. I picked up someone else's that was on the path on the way home as I felt that was making up for it somewhat (& it was in a place much more likely to be stood in).

Doesn't bother me anymore but my little chihuahuas do very very small poos! I do however pick up other dogs poos as well. I think I probably miss the odd one on a rare occasion so picking up one someone else has missed is good all round. The worst times are the early morning before work walkers I can easily pick up 7 or 8 extra poos in my local park at 8.30 am. Lots of my doggy friends pick up their own plus any others they see. It's only poo 2 children and 5 grandchildren harden you up. My dogs also only have dried food organic, expensive so do nice neat solid little poops.

Illuyanka · 10/08/2020 09:22

I don't have one anymore, but used to. I never even thought about it like that, it's something you do as a dog owner. I don't think there are people who loves doing it, but most do it without thinking too much I assume.
I'm kind of curious that you still strongly dislike it after a decade. It's similar to changing nappies for your children. It's smelly, but you do it and doesn't make me feel like it grosses me out. My dog's poo is no different from my child's poo.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 10/08/2020 09:24

I don’t mind. My dog is fed on top quality natural food so produces small firm poos that are very easy to pick up.

On the occasion he’s helped himself to cheap kibble then the results have been much more unpleasant to deal with. I still remember when round at a friends he was just able to reach the box of Bakers kibble. The next 2 days were
horrible to clear up after.

I certainly don't enjoy it but I always pick up after my dog, even it means searching around for ages in long grass... what really grosses me out is when I've picked up the wrong dog's poo. For some reason, that makes me heave - strange, I was the same with changing nappies of babies who weren't my own (friend's babies!)..

IrmaFayLear · 10/08/2020 09:26

It becomes a bit like your own dcs' poo - you develop immunity to the grossness!

If the dog poo smells awful, then I suggest a change of food - some claim to produce low-odour poos.

belvoirbeaver · 10/08/2020 09:28

It's not my favourite task but it's just part and parcel of dog ownership.

The worst part is when there's no bin and you have to carry the bag for a couple of miles.

rottiemum88 · 10/08/2020 09:31

Don't mind it, but DH does most of the dog walking since DS was born. I tend to clean up in the garden. I do admit to holding my nose, but that's just instinct!

BlueSlice · 10/08/2020 09:36

What do you feed your dog @HillyJilly ?

Mine is raw fed and his poos are tiny, solid and don’t smell.

I don’t mind picking up after mine but am grossed out by picking up after others for some reason (still do it occasionally).

TheFaerieQueene · 10/08/2020 09:36

I don’t mind picking up my dog’s poo as she is part of my family and I love her. When I pick up another dog’s poo because their lazy bastard owner didn’t, I gag a bit.

TeddyBeans · 10/08/2020 09:45

I don't mind picking up my dogs poo, it's part and parcel! The only poos I don't pick up are the super runny ones when he's scavenged something dodgy but if it's in our garden we'll wash it away with the hose.

HillyJilly · 10/08/2020 09:49

Fab thanks for replies. I'd love her poo to be firmer, and I find it is when I buy her bones. I used to get bones recommended by the vet because I'm too scared after horror stories to feed her the ones you can buy, but lockdown has stopped this.
Unfortunately my dog is hand reared and has always had a dicky tummy as a result or at least I think that's the reason. Her poo is usually okay but sometimes not. Ive tried her on just about every type of food going (including the mega expensive stuff my 'dog food snob' family member recommended) and it all seems to upset her somewhat even with persistence. She's currently on the organic stuff from Tesco (i forget brand name and I'm not at home) but still not great although better than some. Maybe I need to do some more experimentation.

What do you use @WitchQueenofDarkness? I wonder if it is something I haven't tried yet.
Bakers I've beeen told is the McDonalds of dog food! If my dog ever gets hold of any sort of food she shouldn't she's ill straight off. Even a tiny bit. And she's huge.

Picking up poo is the reason I won’t get a dog. I even feel sick when I drive past people doing it. Grin Kudos to all you owners that pick up, and a plague upon those who don’t.

42daystogo · 10/08/2020 10:03

I used to have a dog and hated it, i also didn't realise before getting a dog just how much they bloody poohed! Changing nappies doesn't really bother me unless it's really smelly. Also i think theres an end in sight with children as its only a few year whereas dogs it's forever which could be 15 years

Chasingsquirrels · 10/08/2020 10:08

It's not something I'd do for pleasure, but the pleasure and joy of sharing my life with a dog far outweighs the inconvenience of having to clear up after him.

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/08/2020 10:09

I don’t suppose it’s anyone’s fave bit of being a dog parent! But it is part of the job, and a key one at that. I don’t mind doing it as he is an integral part of my family and I love him to bits

daisychain1620 · 10/08/2020 10:20

It doesn't really bother me but I don't pick up other dog's poos (feel like this is a done thing now and so a little guilty!)
She mostly does her business on grass but there have been times over the years when it's been so funny on a path, it's impossible to clean up. I try my best but I feel so guilty for leave any mess

SaintWilfred · 10/08/2020 10:24

This. I am not sure I can even smell them any more Grin

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 10/08/2020 10:26

My first job was working in a dog kennels so I've picked up tonnes of poo in my lifetime, but the soft smelly ones still make me gag.
DDog is raw fed though, so nice hard small ones, which is good.
I pick up poos in most places - always in the park, beach, paths etc - but if I'm in some rural woodland I will stick-and-flick off the path instead.

VinylDetective · 10/08/2020 10:32

The only thing that bothers me is the warmth. I’m not bothered by the smell or the texture but a warm turd makes me feel a touch queasy. I know I’m weird!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 10/08/2020 10:37

Nice on a winter's day though vinyl...

IrmaFayLear · 10/08/2020 10:47

Ha ha, yes, the heat oozing through a poo bag...

Deardonkey · 10/08/2020 10:54

I don’t mind my own dogs poo at all. A couple of times I’ve felt queasy when picking up the wrong poo for example when hunting through the long grass and picking up a cold poo which I known doesn’t belong to my dog as it should be warm.

Janus · 10/08/2020 10:54

I’ve become immune but early on I would take kitchen roll with me and put that in the bag and then pick it up as I couldn’t stand the ‘warmth’ either!!
Always pick up in parks and populated areas, if in the forest I will pick up if on a path but stick and flick properly out the way if it’s not near the path as it’s one less bag (even though I buy ones that break down) in the environment.

This! I HATE the warmth! I love my dog but picking up his (little, he's only a mini poodle) poos turns my stomach.
