Dog owners/walkers-how do you feel about picking up poo?

I mean just that. To clarify I've only maybe once or twice failed to pick up after mine, in decades of dog owning. I always do it unless I really can't*. I hear other people who own dogs saying they really don't mind, It's nothing doesn't bother them. I have to admit I really dislike doing it although I do it. It grosses me out. I breathe in and hold my breath while I do it Grin
My ex who co owns the dog with me doesn't mind one bit.
Does it bother you doing it?
*once she did it on a very busy road. I almost got run over. I hung about waiting for a gap in the traffic that didn't happen or at least not before the poo had more or less disappeared.
Another time she was off leash and I'm sure she did it but it was dark and in a very overgrown area. Couldn't find it. I picked up someone else's that was on the path on the way home as I felt that was making up for it somewhat (& it was in a place much more likely to be stood in).

Brown slugs should be made illegal

Finally, someone else who feels the same as me about slugs! I think I have an actual phobia of them, they utterly repulse me and make me feel all panicky. I'd rather pick up dog poo, and that's saying something as the dog poo is the main reason we don't have a dog! I can't bear the smell of it and whilst I loved our previous dog, I don't miss that bit of dog ownership one bit. It smells far, far worse to me than other animal's poo.

StillMedusa · 10/08/2020 15:09

I don't even think about it! Then again I've been working with children who have severe disabilities (in nappies for life) for years and a quick dog poo pick up is easier than a poonami that goes from nappy to nape of neck any day :D

I prefer raw fed poos but mine is fussy and so eats a mix of raw some days and dried/cooked others. And in a really cold frosty morning a nice warm solid poo seems quite comforting!

Syrrup · 10/08/2020 15:10

I thought I'd hate it but actually I don't mind - it's just what you do and there are much more disgusting aspects of owning a dog. He's on a high quality food so they're nice and firm and easy to pick up. Although the other day he pooed on another dogs poo and I didn't realise; I definitely gagged when I felt the cold, sloppy poo through the bag contrasted with the warm one.

Worse than picking up poo: ticks, drool on pillows, putting his face right into mine and burping, spitting his half-chewed food out, rolling in horse shit, dried animal parts, and smegma. At least the poo is outside.

Can't say I Iike doing it but its part of having a pet. Don't like playing catch in the pissing down rain either but I knew when I got a dog from a working line, what their energy levels would be like so I liken it to that. You do the shit bits(see what I did there 😁) in exchange for the good bits like days out walking and hilarious mischief and when they sneak into your bed when it's cold.

snowone · 10/08/2020 15:14

My dog is raw fed so his 💩 is solid, like little pellets. I don't mind picking it up.

I absolutely hate and despise people who don't pick up after their dog. There is literally zero excuse out there that is acceptable.

If you don't want to pick up dog 💩 then don't get a dog.....SIMPLES!

Branleuse · 10/08/2020 15:18

it doesnt particularly bother me, but it is annoying having to carry it ages sometimes when there are very few poo bins

longtompot · 10/08/2020 15:32

It doesn't bother me, but I do hold my breath when opening the poo bins to put the bag in. Esp on a warm day.
Mine is on Millie's Wolfheart and her poos are quite small and firm and don't really smell. They usually smell when she has eaten something she has found.
My dh will not pick up after her, unless he has to walk her alone and then he will. But he won't clean up in the garden.

Bodgedboxdye · 10/08/2020 15:37

I don’t have a dog, but when I’ve dog sat, Ive had to pick up poop, and it’s gross - but has to be done.

Once my MIL’s pooch did a poop whilst on the way back from the school run and I’d run out of bags, I had to ask someone if I could borrow one. It was really embarrassing as it was on the footpath and there was loads of people around. /:

LightDrizzle · 10/08/2020 15:38

I don't love it but it's not a big deal. The worst is if it is soft and in long grass so you are sort of straining it off! I feel bad if I can't get it cleanly off the pavement too.
I'm an absolute zealot about it though, dog shit on pavements in particular is foul and makes me very angry. Dog owners who don't pick-up do us all a huge disservice.

mogtheexcellent · 10/08/2020 15:40

Ddog trained herself to do it right next to the poo bin in the park so it's not so bad... Wink

Hyperion100 · 10/08/2020 15:40

People who dont pick up their dogs poo or do pick it up but then throw it in a hedge or bush should be summarily executed.

LockdownQ · 10/08/2020 16:43

@Hyperion100

People who dont pick up their dogs poo or do pick it up but then throw it in a hedge or bush should be summarily executed.
But that's what the forestry commission recommend?
MovinOnUp · 10/08/2020 16:51

I think hyperion means pick it up in a bag and then chuck it in a hedge.

I can deal with my own dogs poo fine, Other dog's not so much.

Since lockdown has eased I am finding other dog's poo in my front garden...I have to leave it a couple of days to dry out before I can deal with it Envy boak!

WitchQueenofDarkness · 10/08/2020 16:55

@HillyJilly

He's on a mix of Butternut Box and Different Dog. Both are "home cooked" style real food delivered frozen and are actually human grade.

He loves them. He often gets a raw chicken wing for his teeth at the moment as we are furloughed from Pets as Therapy. That will have to stop when we are allowed to visit and is one of the reasons we don't feed raw.

Dollyparton3 · 10/08/2020 17:06

I couldn't bear a poo pick before we got our own dog now it doesn't bother me in the slightest. That said, he has a small bowl of raw with his tea in the evening and the rest is kibble. It's definitely the bit of raw that keeps their insides pretty clean. Every now and then if I forget to take his raw out of the freezer in time (he has the natures menu raw nuggets) I give him butchers tripe and he whiffs a bit

HerondaleDucks · 10/08/2020 17:08

I always pick up after my dog whether it's convenient or not. I bag it and I put said bag in my pocket until I reach a bin or the bin at home. People who do not pick up are gross and irresponsible. Those that bag and leave on the side are downright criminals.

TrufflePioneer · 10/08/2020 17:25

My puppy has only just learnt to poo on walks instead of only in the garden - and I swear he poos 4 times a day now. He's only 5.7kg, where does it all come from!? He's on Burns puppy dry food only (border terrier, prone to getting porky).

I do tend to hold my breath as the smell of dog shit does nothing for me, but I don't mind - all part of owning a dog. Anyone who doesn't pick up is going to hell.

This week we are away and were wandering around a northern seaside town. Pup had already done 2 poos so I didn't think he'd do another, but popped a single bag in my pocket just in case. Went into a shop leaving DH with puppy and...he (the dog, not DH) dropped a perfect torpedo turd, on pretty much the busiest corner of the street. He had to guard it with his feet from the foot traffic (in flip-flops), with everyone glaring in disgust, and frantically phone me to come back with the bag. Hahahaha, hilarious 😂

Juiceey · 10/08/2020 17:45

Aw Truffle poor DH!

TheoneandObi · 10/08/2020 17:47

i really don't mind picking up my own dog's poo. But I accidentally picked up another dog's poo the other day and nearly chundered. My dog squatted and i thought he'd performed, so i went to the spot, saw some poo and picked it up. It was cold, signifying it wasn't his. He'd done a dummy. i shuddered!

KeeOe · 10/08/2020 20:05

With 3 greyhound that have turned shitting into an Olympic sport, I'm completely immune. I pick up about 12 a day (3 short walks and free access to garden). I don't even wince anymore. My friend gags when she comes out of me - I have picking it up to a fine art. She calls me the 'dog shit ninja'.

KeeOe · 10/08/2020 20:08

God, that should read out WITH me. Out OF me conjures up a whole other sordid world I don't want to think about!

midnightstar66 · 10/08/2020 20:09

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, bit I do have a jrt who is small for the breed and is fed on good quality dry food, id have an issue with a Great Dane on canned pedigree chum

TokyoSushi · 10/08/2020 20:14

Totally fine, I think it's like your own child. No problem at all picking up my own dogs poo, no way I'd ever pick up another dogs!

SimonJT · 10/08/2020 20:16

I don’t really think about it to be honest, it might be nice in winter when its lovely and warm!

VetOnCall · 10/08/2020 21:28

I've experienced more dog poo incidents than I care to remember at work, so dealing with my own dogs' small, solid raw-fed poos is practically a treat after some of the biohazard-grade stuff we regularly see. That said I do get a slight boke feeling if I inadvertently pick up a cold one out on a walk because it's in the same spot where one of mine has just gone 🤢
