Dog owners/walkers-how do you feel about picking up poo?

I mean just that. To clarify I've only maybe once or twice failed to pick up after mine, in decades of dog owning. I always do it unless I really can't*. I hear other people who own dogs saying they really don't mind, It's nothing doesn't bother them. I have to admit I really dislike doing it although I do it. It grosses me out. I breathe in and hold my breath while I do it Grin
My ex who co owns the dog with me doesn't mind one bit.
Does it bother you doing it?
*once she did it on a very busy road. I almost got run over. I hung about waiting for a gap in the traffic that didn't happen or at least not before the poo had more or less disappeared.
Another time she was off leash and I'm sure she did it but it was dark and in a very overgrown area. Couldn't find it. I picked up someone else's that was on the path on the way home as I felt that was making up for it somewhat (& it was in a place much more likely to be stood in).

I do pick up other dogs/cats poos too though if they're hard and cold and for some reason it knocks sick into my mouth. Why is it better with my own dog?! No idea.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 10/08/2020 11:54

Large breed, big poo.

It used to bother me but I’m not bothered anymore. It takes seconds and cleaning up after them is just part and parcel of pet ownership.

VinylDetective · 10/08/2020 11:57

If nothing else, this thread’s reassured me that I’m not as weird as I thought. I’d rather pick up another dog’s cold turd than my dog’s warm one.

It's an integral part of owning a dog and it doesn't bother me at all.

My fantasy secret power would be the ability to wave a wand and have all the unpicked up poo delivered into the beds of the miscreants

fourquenelles · 10/08/2020 12:07

Oh and there's almost nothing better on a cold and frosty morning than picking up a warm poo Grin

LockdownQ · 10/08/2020 12:09

Mines excellent and going off the path into the woods to do it bless her, to save me the job! Or at least near the woods so I can flick it in.

Wish I could claim to have trained her to do that!

But yes agree with others that raw feeing makes there poos much more ok!

Spidey66 · 10/08/2020 12:12

It’s not my favourite bit of being a dog owner but it comes with the territory. Like dirty nappies and broken sleep is part and parcel of being a parent.

The worse thing for me is not actually the poo. I have OA in my knees and find bending difficult. I know there are scoops but when I go to the park I’m already bringing ball thrower, balls, a bubble wand (my dog loves chasing bubbles) bottle of water if it’s warm, poo bags, hand gel, keys, phone ....a scoop is one more thing, plus they don’t always scoop it all up.

LillianBland · 10/08/2020 12:13

It doesn’t bother me one bit, but I’m a dog sitter. I’m an expert at using one bag to pick up multiple poos. Pick up first, twist bag and pick up next and so on, until you have to tie it. I can’t stand it when I’ve spotted a poo, assumed I’ve missed one of my charges doing it, only to discover it’s freezing cold, when I’ve felt it through the bag. 🤢 I can pick up after a dozen of ‘my’ dogs throughout the day but a strange dogs poo and I’m disgusted. Weird, I know.

Spidey66 · 10/08/2020 12:13

Oh add dog biscuits to the list.

A man I would meet regularly on walks, used to put the bag of poo in his pocket to keep his hand warm. 🤣
Gwynfluff · 10/08/2020 12:19

I’m the same as others. Fine with my own dogs but couldn’t pick up random poos.

Agree good quality kibble is the way to go - with a good balance of protein and carbs. Easy to pick up pop.

Raw is too protein rich, so tended to get a small hard poo and later loose stool build up.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 10/08/2020 13:56

I don't like it, but I always do pick it up as it's disgusting and unfair to leave it there.

I have had all sorts of animals for all my life and never minded shoveling horse or sheep manure, cleaning chook poo out of the chicken coop etc. but there is something about dog poo - it just stinks.

ekidmxcl · 10/08/2020 14:03

I think dog poo is gross but I always pick up after mine because it’s filthy and criminal not to. As I know he’s properly wormed etc I just get on with it.

I put rubber gloves on when I have to clean up do poo that’s been left by randoms on my street. And I hope those doing this outside my house burn in hell.

Springersrock · 10/08/2020 14:06

It’s not my favourite activity, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do

Other dog’s poo makes me gag though

I’ve only ever not picked up once. She did a poo in a load of fallen leaves and not could not find it for love nor money. Eventually spied a poo, picked it up and it was stone cold so must have been another dogs. I couldn’t stop gagging

SidesteppinTheRona · 10/08/2020 14:08

Well, I could think of better things to do than pick up my large dog's huge poos, but it's just something I have to do so I've got used to it.

A PP was right: your own dog's poos are a lot less smelly than other dog's poos. I reckon I could identify mine from their smell if I had to do a blindfold test!

And yes to the warmth... yuck! Gross even on a cold day!

diddl · 10/08/2020 14:09

Small price to pay I think.

Well, depending on the size of the dog!

Have recently had a big dog staying & couldn't actually get my hand around all the poo to pick it up!

Sometimes you have to use the blutac technique to get the last bits! Grin
Sertchgi123 · 10/08/2020 14:13

I pick up happily. If anyone doesn't they shouldn't own a dog. I always think to myself, what would I rather? Pick up or have a child with dog poo all over their shoes?

diddl · 10/08/2020 14:15

"Sometimes you have to use the blutac technique to get the last bits! "

Or make sure that the person who wanted the dog to stay does the picking upWink

Deadringer · 10/08/2020 14:15

It's the highlight of my day.

vanillandhoney · 10/08/2020 14:17

Well, it's not my favourite thing in the world....

But of course, I do it anyway. The only times I don't is if it's in a nettle or bramble bush or something like that.

FastFood · 10/08/2020 14:20

I absolutely don't mind my dog's poo.
But when I happen to pick up another dog's poo by accident and it's cold, I'm totally grossed out.

I remember one dark night, I picked up a poo and realised it was a slug. I dropped everything (including the dog) and ran away, like any responsible grown up person would do.
Brown slugs should be made illegal.

Takingabreakagain · 10/08/2020 14:20

Mine are raw fed so there's barely anything to pick up - little nuggets that don't smell are no problem to scoop.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 10/08/2020 14:25

I've started walking a neighbour's dog. Its revolting. I now keep a handful of dried leaves in the bag. She poops, I drop the leaves over it, and scoop it all up together. You cant feel the poo.

ThatLibraryMiss · 10/08/2020 14:31

So many people are recommending raw feeding here (me too!) I thought I'd put a couple of links to good raw feeds I've found: Paleo Ridge and Durham Animal Feeds. Both produce minces (not slurries) of balanced raw foods. Small Dog usually gets the ones without fruit, veg and herbs and is thriving. He produces firm teeny tiny turds with very little smell.
