Dog owners/walkers-how do you feel about picking up poo?

I mean just that. To clarify I've only maybe once or twice failed to pick up after mine, in decades of dog owning. I always do it unless I really can't*. I hear other people who own dogs saying they really don't mind, It's nothing doesn't bother them. I have to admit I really dislike doing it although I do it. It grosses me out. I breathe in and hold my breath while I do it Grin
My ex who co owns the dog with me doesn't mind one bit.
Does it bother you doing it?
*once she did it on a very busy road. I almost got run over. I hung about waiting for a gap in the traffic that didn't happen or at least not before the poo had more or less disappeared.
Another time she was off leash and I'm sure she did it but it was dark and in a very overgrown area. Couldn't find it. I picked up someone else's that was on the path on the way home as I felt that was making up for it somewhat (& it was in a place much more likely to be stood in).

I really really struggle with it. I really have to try hard not to vom! 🤢

Cakeorchocolate · 10/08/2020 21:49

Not a dog owner but that's my main reason why I don't want one.

DH would like one, his parents and sibling have always had dogs. I know it's a simple thing and I have dd so not inexperienced with poo. My logic is that she would eventually (and pretty much has cracked) being able to wipe her own bum and not need cleaning by us. Dogs always need picking up after. For much longer than it took dd to manage her own toileting needs.

We occasionally walk the in-laws dogs, on the rare occasion they're away without them, i pick it up (would never leave it), but really dislike it.

@SimonJT

I don’t really think about it to be honest, it might be nice in winter when its lovely and warm!
It’s not.

I must say I was worried that people would think I meant I don't do it! And I do! But I've never got to the I don't mind stage.
Yes a dog handler once told me that its nice when you put it in your pocket on a winter's night and it keeps your hand warm GrinEnvy

Can I put out a plea for people not to put their bagged-up dog poo in other peoples' wheelie bins?
After ours had been emptied last week someone deposited a really smelly bag of poo in it. Every time I go to the bin I can smell it (the warm weather doesn't help!) - I'ts over a week yet til the bin is emptied.
Take it home and put it in your own bloody bin!

@midnightstar66

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, bit I do have a jrt who is small for the breed and is fed on good quality dry food, id have an issue with a Great Dane on canned pedigree chum
This made me laugh, I've got a cocker spaniel but the bloke I'm seeing has a great dane - used to be fed on tins of Chappie, and now on dried food. I was staggered at how much poo they produce.
WitchQueenofDarkness · 11/08/2020 12:54

Mine produced the most incredible amount of poo the one time I gave him Chappie.

i swear more came out than went in.

Trashtara · 11/08/2020 14:25

It becomes a bit like your own dcs' poo - you develop immunity to the grossness!

Please tell me when this kicks in! 4 years in to parenting and still really hate poo.

As for dogs, it's a well known part of dog ownership and anyone not happy to do it shouldn't have a dog (or kids).

HaudMaDug · 11/08/2020 15:47

I live on a farm surrounded by livestock so whether I'm on the farm track or in the woods I always pick up HaudMaPups poos but I notice that lots of not so conciencious dog walkers leave their dog shit all over the place as if it does not matter here. Does my head in as I don't want the farmer to blame me. Mind my pups poos are instantly recognisable with the bits of sweetcorn he has from my leftovers.
I had a Great Dane years ago and her poos from dry food were huge, had to use shopping bags as poo bags were too small. Smile

HRHQueenMortificado · 11/08/2020 16:43

Always pick it up unless she's got a poorly tummy then I try and go back and swil it away but once or twice it just wasn't possible.

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 11/08/2020 17:24

I don't have a dog but just wanted to say thank you so much to the people who say they pick up other dogs' poo - you are wonderful and appreciated.
A local beauty spot is a literal dogshit minefield for us despite there being about 6 dog poo bins available.
I'm glad nice people exist to help mitigate the ones who just, well, it's not that they 'don't give a shit' but they do leave one!

caramac04 · 11/08/2020 17:28

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest, part and parcel of having a dog.
However if she’s scavenged something and her poo is overly soft, (runny), I find it really difficult to actually clear up.
It might help that I have no sense of smell.

AmigoDog · 11/08/2020 19:12

I’m extremely new to dog ownership and it was something I was dreading (it’s actually what put me off getting one earlier). I actually don’t mind it at all - but I do have a very small dog with very small poos. I’m certain I’d struggle with big warm ones Grin Envy

HillyJilly · 12/08/2020 15:34

My dog's poo is the size of a large human's.

ZigZagPlant · 12/08/2020 15:35

Doesn’t bother me at all. Until I get a cold one and realise it’s another dogs. Weirdly other people’s dogs poo really offends me!

ZigZagPlant · 12/08/2020 15:36

My dog's poo is the size of a large human's.

A large human’s poo or a large poo similar to a human’s? The thought of the former made me smile!

Helenluvsrob · 12/08/2020 15:37

It’s fine.
Husband ( who didn’t want a dog ....) even said “ well it’s quicker and easier than changing a stinky nappy”😂

HaudMaDug · 12/08/2020 15:42

@HillyJilly

My dog's poo is the size of a large human's.
My Great Dane's poo felt like it was the size of a large human. (Certainly too bloody heavy to fit in a pocket)Grin
SilverOtter · 12/08/2020 15:46

Doesn't bother me, it's just part and parcel of having a dog.

MrsVeryTired · 12/08/2020 15:55

This thread made me laugh a bit, the big dog owners Grin

We've mostly had small-ish female dogs and theirs was usually small (but frequent) so quite easy, we know have a larger male and his are whoppers, although less frequent. I sometimes need two bags Grin

And yes, I really dislike picking up other dogs poo (on my grass eg)

4cats2kids · 12/08/2020 15:58

Good thing about this heatwave is it dries out the turds in the garden so i don’t get that squelchy feeling when I pick them up. I hate it when they feel squishy.

ThePug · 12/08/2020 16:01

I don’t mind picking up our dog’s poo one bit, but this morning I had to pick up someone else’s that was at the end of our drive Hmm and I was seriously grossed out, bleuughhhhh!

Chasingsquirrels · 12/08/2020 16:41

We use empty bread bags for the Great Dane. Thick plastic & would be throwing away anyway.
Also use cereal bags and the bags they put frozen food in for online shopping for both dogs.
Only at home though, poo bags out & about.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 12/08/2020 18:42

Like other posters, it’s the only thing putting me off getting a dog.

When I was pregnant with DD1, I had horrendous all day, all pregnancy sickness. I would frequently vomit in the park whilst out with toddler DS - so I say this as a caveat that I was very EnvyEnvyEnvy anyway and always on the verge of being sick. Anything could set me off, really.

One day whilst walking past a dog doing a poo in the park, the smell hit me like a freight train and I just turned and threw up into a bush immediately. DD is now five and that sensation has never really left me - if I allow myself to focus on a dog doing a poo, I feel like I might be sick. It’s like a Pavlovian response. So kudos to all the dog owners it doesn’t bother! It’s like a super power.

We had some on our drive once. Woman just carried on walkingHmm.

I bagged it & sent the kids running after her with it shouting "your dog poo, we bagged it for you. Here's your dog poo..."
