Yorkshire people, is it bits or scraps?

If you are from Yorkshire, where are you from and what do you call the crumbs that fall off fried fish?

Asking for a friend...

Scraps, and my best friend from Huddersfield also says scraps

CorianderLord · 10/08/2020 07:26

Scraps

sashh · 10/08/2020 07:27

Jesus... he is right! We just had a massive argument over this (I know how silly this is). But I had always know them as “bits” (Huddersfield) while he says this is absolutely wrong!

I would dsay bits, born in Dewsbury, lived until I was 9 near Huddersfield, maybe it's a town thing.

*And that potato and fish thing is a Yorkshire fishcake"

Not to be mistaken with a potato scone

So it would appear that there's a small area in the Huddersfield/Halifax/Holmfirth/Dewsbury way that calls them bits, but everywhere else in Yorkshire calls them scraps.

Just don't ever get into a discussion about breadcakes. Or ginnels vs snickets.

Or in most parts of Yorkshire 'a fishcake'. No fish and chip shop operator in their right mind would attempt to pass off the other kind as a fishcake in these parts. There's a lot of ex miners around and some of them still have their pickaxes and shovels handy.

Reminds me of the time I was in a fish shop in Wetwang (the point here being that I get to write about Wetwang and we can all say what a great name for a place it is. WW is east of York and has completely different nomenclature for it's fish shop wares).

I went in and asked for a fishcake, and the person behind the counter said that they had run out. This was a lie as I could see one through the glass in the warming cupboard. I pointed to said fishcake 'but there's one right there' to which the server told me that it wasn't a fishcake but was a patty (or something, I can't remember). But anyway, I bought the patty fishcake and very nice it was too.

It’s a ginnel 🤣🤣🤣

scraps - east yorkshire

dancinfeet · 10/08/2020 07:53

@BarbaraofSeville in East Yorks a fishcake is covered in breadcrumbs. Battered potato with or without fish in with it is called a patty. On holiday in Blackpool as a teenager, my friend went into a chippy and asked for a patty butty in a breadcake- they looked at her like she had two heads.

GetThatHelmetOn · 10/08/2020 07:54

He started the breadcakes one last night.... I’m so not getting into that... from now on I would point to what I want and keep my mouth shut Grin

Anyone know if the Hull chip spice craze was started because of Yankee Burger who have been selling their chips with it on for years and years? I remember getting spiced chips as a child nearly 40 years ago. Why is chip spice such a thing in Hull, any ideas?

doublethecuddlestwinmum · 10/08/2020 08:10

I'm in East Yorkshire and it's scraps. Hi @OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea 👋👋

God a party butty at 3am outside Spiders. Manna from heaven.

Pretty sure chip spice originated at Yankee Burger, yes.

Spiders isn't reopening is it?
Personally I liked a dirty burger at 3am from bun in the oven

dancinfeet · 10/08/2020 08:43

@ladymuck111 Yankee Burger chilli garlic sauce is the best thing ever, nowhere else on earth make this sauce like they do. With chip spice chips dipped in it of course. I'm no longer in Hull, but if I do go back for a visit, YB is a must for a junk food lunch stop.

@LunaNorth

Magpiefeather · 10/08/2020 08:47

God I miss scraps (West Yorkshire lass now living in the midlands)

AH happy happy days! Fond memories of Spiders here! Grin

Bluesheep8 · 10/08/2020 08:52

And the chip spice thing, I remember that too. I think it did start at Yankee Burger. Lots of places went on to do it though, particularly pizza takeaways.
I used to ask what was in it but it was a closely guarded secret. I did manage to clean that it involved celery salt though.

LunaNorth · 10/08/2020 09:19

Spiders isn’t reopening?

That’s very sad Sad

LunaNorth · 10/08/2020 09:22

Party butty??

GlassMarble · 10/08/2020 09:24

Mirfield, Dewsbury way - “bits” when I was little.

Don’t live there no though so not sure if it’s changed.
