@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath

I ws surprise how many people were dying of flu in the summer - couldn't work out of it was more than usual.

Though if you can't get past temp checks to get seen at GP or hospital I suspect that wouldn't be helping.

Apparently it’s actually slightly fewer than usual, which shows how many people die of flu normally.

I bought a cheap face shield today, it was a huge improvement for me mentally over a mask. I then ordered several good quality ones for the whole family. It made a difference when out and about - people were looking at me and smiling (with their eyes Hmm) for the first time in weeks. Some friendly words were exchanged. When I got home, DH whispered to me that DS had put my mask in the bin as soon as I went out. So he prefers me in a shield too.

DH has spent a lot of time in mental health settings visiting a family member - he said our community feels like an open air psych ward right now. But today I felt like I was serving some kind of helpful function for others. And myself.

Have a lovely day over there...

TheOrchidKiller · 12/08/2020 14:08

"and ordering their spouses to strip naked upon entering and going straight into the shower whilst their clothes were hot washed."

"That's just fucking unhinged."

And probably unneccessary. I know a few people who were stripping off & showering immediately after work. So I googled the govt guidelines & various NHS policies out there...

...Nothing. I think one NHS trust said you could if you wanted to but there was no need. I suppose if you've been in sweaty PPE all day a shower would be nice. Having been encased in PPE for shorter periods I'm still not sure how covid can get through all that plastic & a uniform & onto my body. Unless it crawls up the trouser leg?

@Drivingdownthe101I hope you have a better afternoon & get to eat your lolly in peace. There is always one person who loves what many others are hating, & who is insensitive to that.

@Dowser I did change my name yesterday, as you suggested Grin

Today I've changed it again, as a tribute to the wonderful Kid Creole and the Coconuts, and because I'm determined to try to stay (mostly) happy despite the fact that I feel the people in this thread are among the few who've made it into the lifeboats. So cheers Wine Gin

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 12/08/2020 14:14

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito, the windowsill trick should work with the tomatoes. If any do stay green, chutney is good, and so is fried green tomatoes, I think there are recipes online.

It is eye opening.

I knew winter flu was a killer but summer flu being one completely past me by - I knew the various flu viruses were still circulating ready to erupt again come autum but still a surpise.

I always felt sorry for Annie finding out that he wasn't her daddy. And she was called ugly too Grin

I can grasp people finding this streamlined version of life easier, it's when it's accompanied by a lack of empathy that the majority are feeling very far from normal and struggling with it that gets very grating.

I'm a summer lover, but I really don't need the thermometer higher than 25oC...

You don't hear much about colds/ flu/ norrovirus etc through the summer, but there must be enough transmission for them to survive to remerge in the autumn/ winter.

How to screw with a Dementor's head, point out that flu is currently killing more people than Covid 19... Grin

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 12/08/2020 14:37

Thanks for the tomato tips, all. Will leave them to do their thing for a while longer. They are south facing up against the wall of the house so they should be getting enough sun at least. Will probably resign myself to making chutney with them in a few weeks.

countrygirl99 · 12/08/2020 14:49

Mine have only just started turning red.

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 12/08/2020 14:50

Thunderstorms in Fife have caused landslides, flooding and closed schools. FFS the poor kids have only been back 2 days!!!!!

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 12/08/2020 14:51

2020 really really sucks

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 12/08/2020 14:58

We have had about 15 small red tomatoes so far. I think if they stay slow to go red, you can take the ones that are less green off, and ripen these in the windowsill, and this encourages some more of the green ones to start turning. But it is still quite early, if they're not in a greenhouse.

TheOrchidKiller · 12/08/2020 14:59

It really does suck.

So sorry for anyone now also having to deal with the floods. Read that some schools won't be able to open as a result.

Reedwarbler · 12/08/2020 15:27

@bakingcupcakes you say about Diana dying. I remember when Elvis died and I was in my early 20s. I really couldn't understand the fuss because he appeared to me to be an old man at 42 and he had been around for ever anyway. What a shallow youth I was.

justasking111 · 12/08/2020 15:29

Scotland is suffering so much the train accident, floods, etc. as I type it is thundering away again here in N Wales. Strange weather all round.

MaxNormal · 12/08/2020 15:34

Was just reading the Guardian article about why the UK has fared badly economically compared to much of Europe. One of the reasons was that people here are more afraid of the virus.
Well no wonder given how the sodding Guardian has covered it.

We’ve just had lockdown extended here and the news from Stonehaven is absolutely horrifying.

I feel like I’m going a bit mad trying to put on my work head when it’s all happening right here.

amicissimma · 12/08/2020 16:36

"I have no idea how anyone's life is back to normal unless they never go out"

Someone on another thread was saying that her social life hadn't been damaged as she'd been speaking to her friends on the phone. While I have relationships that I mostly maintain on the phone due to geography, my main social life relies heavily on face-to-face contact with all the extra nuances that bodily language brings and the comfort of a pat on the arm or a hug if appropriate. I'm missing it terribly. It seems very sad that some people can't understand how important that type of social life is to others.

ILoveTotoro · 12/08/2020 17:10

@Drivingdownthe101

I think I was tipped over the edge by one of my friends (lovely, but very different to me) saying she’d had her ‘best year yet’.
I can't stand this sort of comment. How on earth can it be anyone's best year ever? Everything absolutely sucks about it. One of my friends said it too. but she is a spiteful vindictive little bitch who was loving seeing everyone worried about money, jobs and paying mortgages etc. cos she's never achieved anything with her life and lives off her parents and has never worked. Her glee was vocal and it was awful Blush

We are no longer friends 😂

NothingIsWrong · 12/08/2020 17:13

I was 19 when Diana died and spent the morning nit combing a 15yo who was on a residential weekend I was supervising. She had waist length marmalade frizzy hair and was hysterical that she would have to shave it off. It took HOURS and there was nothing but Diana on the radio.

It is seared into my brain.

Willow2017 · 12/08/2020 17:33

I was working night shift as the news came in about the car crash, updates which were at first positive then her subsequent death was a shock. I was sad that such a young vibrant woman had died and felt immensly sorry for her boys.
I didnt have the hysteria though.

It was such a shame how her life panned out considering how she was treated and I did admire her determination to showcase issues like the landmines and Aids etc and get on with her life.
When the funeral was on I felt terribly for her boys, that was such a personal thing for them in the glare of the public.
I guess she made an impact on many peoples lives and touched them in many ways and thats why so many people felt the need to show thier respects. (I know some were probably there just to say that they were there on the day and virtue signal but thats probably what they do to any big event happy or sad)

This is probably something similar, people getting swept up in they hype, believing everything bad read anywhere, and posibly fear of being the odd one out and getting villified for it. Some people are of course revelling in it, the chance to bullly and control others which they would never normally have the guts to do, now they have 'a good cause' to justify it. Its sickening.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 12/08/2020 17:41

It reminds me of the dancing sickness. People dancing themselves to death, swept up in a mass hysteria.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_mania#:~:text=Dancing%20mania%20(also%20known%20as,the%2014th%20and%2017th%20centuries.&text=The%20mania%20affected%20men%2C%20women,until%20they%20collapsed%20from%20exhaustion.

Humans don't change. We are weird creatures.

Pleasenomoreglitter · 12/08/2020 17:44

Well I've just had a call from the National Covid Service. My diagnostic op that it took me years to get onto a waiting list for because no gp would listen, which was cancelled in April due to Covid, is now not likely to happen at all unless I become incapacitated with pain because I'm unable to isolate for two weeks beforehand at the moment. This is because the building work that was also delayed because Covid, has finally started so we will have builders in the house for the next 3 months and it just isn't possible! I can only assume they're trying to whittle down their waiting lists that must be massive now so I was easy pickings by saying I couldn't currently comply! I will apparently be classed as an urgent referral should it become unbearable and my gp refers me back. However, this does of course also rely on me being able to get a gp to take me seriously again, or indeed to even be allowed to see one. I'm so hot, tired and miserable I can't even work up the energy to be angry anymore. I just feel numb with the whole shitty thing.
