Please help can't pass driving test

I'm at my wit's end and I just cannot seem to pass the fucking thing. My fourth attempt is tomorrow. I haven't told a single soul I'm doing it, not even my DH. Only my instructor knows.

My only problem, and I really do mean this, is nerves. I get so flustered and so nervous that I panic and make the most ridiculous mistakes. I never, ever do these things in lessons nor when I'm out practising with DH. I'm a completely confident driver but I go utterly to shit in the tests. Things I have tried that haven't worked:

  • Beta blockers
  • Kalms, Rescue Remedy
  • Narrating what I'm doing as I'm doing it
  • Practising - I do a shit tonne of practising
  • Hynotherapy
  • A different instructor
  • Pretending the examiner is a taxi driver

I am all out of ideas. How the fuck can I stop being so nervous during the test? I am a perfectly competent, confident driver in lessons. I go to pieces during the test.

I have always been the same with any practical exam. EG with my piano exams I'd have practised my exam piece for months and know it absolutely back to front and inside out. On exam day I'd cock it up completely!

I'm at my wit's end with this!!

Good luck OP - don't worry, remember nobody except you and your instructor know about your test so this is basically a freebie and you already know you're a perfectly good driver so however long it takes you to pass is basically irrelevant!

TheTeenageYears

My original test was booked for 1 April but was obviously cancelled. Tests weren't cancelled mid-March though, they were cancelled right at the end of March. They have 3 months worth of booked tests to go through so unfortunately I'd say it'll be quite a while before they open it up to new bookings. When I fail mine today it'll be ages I expect before I can get another booked in.

Have a cigarette if you think it’ll help...it’s been 7 years-you’ll only get a few puffs before you’ll chuck it anyway.

My bowels are like jelly Blush

I hate the stupid show me/tell me questions as well. My mind goes completely blank.

Good luck op
There are homeopathic remedies for this but sadly too late now
Aconite 10m or Narayani fear

I took Aconite 10m when I had to step up to the plate after hubby’s stroke. He now can’t drive . It helped me enormously on my first long haul drive (7 hours ) to the sw

Dowser · 05/08/2020 09:30

My grandson, 17 is having his first driving lesson today

toothfairy73 · 05/08/2020 09:32

Good luck. I passed 4th time. I was so nervous and I had the examiner from hell 3 times (including the time I passed). I got to a point of "fuck it" I just did what I wanted; when needing to parallel park the windows were steamed up, I got out the car and wiped them. I thought I'd fail anyway and she passed me. She was impressed that I took the initiative.

Good luck today OP. The fuck it and cocky approach helped me

FastAndCurious · 05/08/2020 09:32

Good luck!

It took me 5 goes due to fucking nerves!

FrontToBackTree · 05/08/2020 09:34

I hate the fact the examiners are all men. When I first learned age 17 my Dad took me and he just used to shout at me the whole time and make me cry. I left home shortly after and didn't drive for another 13 years. I find the fact the examiners I've had so far have all been male really triggering of anxiety for that reason.

I passed on my 7th or 8th I think(long time ago!). The one I finally passed on was the one I'd told nobody about. I'll remember the look on my Dads face when I got home from my 'driving lesson' to tell him I passed my test forever 🥰 good luck OP

JacobReesMogadishu · 05/08/2020 09:41

Good luck.

Just think - what's the worst that can happen? You don't pass. It won't be the end of the world. Try not to give a fuck, treat it like a lesson.

If you don't pass today it sounds like hypnotherapy ratehr than a week of intensive lessons is what you need....to try and help change your mindset about the test?

BluebellsGreenbells · 05/08/2020 09:44

You can soooo do this!!!

Of it takes a packet of fags, then go do it and chuck them out!

Namechange8471 · 05/08/2020 09:47

Good luck!

Sober4Summer20 · 05/08/2020 09:47

I would explain to your examiner before you begin how anxious you get with exams. It took me seven times to pass my test and the only reason I passed on the seventh time was because the examiner was really thoughtful. Before each manoeuvre he said "we are just going to stop for a minute now, take a few big breatha and then try your best". I was so grateful to him. It really worked. Good luck! xx

Redcups64 · 05/08/2020 09:54

Been there, done that, but mine was worse than just 4 tests (although one fail was not my fault- the car broke down in my defence)

The only way your probably going to do it is to cut the nicely nicely crap.

Your an adult FFS- stop being childish about it and get on with the job at hand! If you can’t control your emotions for one hour, as a full functioning adult, you need to get yourself a grip. Not passing is not a option, sort yourself out and get on with it- no time for emotions whilst on the test, just get the hell on with it and stop being so erratic!

(Now just imagine your mother saying that to you and it should work...if not imagine my mum saying it...that will definitely work!)

Jayaywhynot · 05/08/2020 09:56

A driving test examiner told me that they are not looking for a driver that is good at the controls, they are looking for safe drivers.
He said constantly look in your mirrors, dont just move your eyes actually move your head so the examiner can see you are checking your surroundings.
If you hit the kerb, balls up reversing round a corner, examiner said that doesn't matter so mucht, no harm done but try to keep the minors down.
Iv told loads of people the tip of moving your head and they all passed, coincidence, maybe, but its worth a try

ginandgingers92 · 05/08/2020 10:06

Best of luck OP! It took me 5x to pass due to nerves, but I did it in the end, and so will you!

Branleuse · 05/08/2020 10:11

I passed on my 6th or 7th attempt. I kinda stopped counting

BertieBotts · 05/08/2020 10:13

Buy the fucking cigarettes, give them to a random homeless person when you've finished, they'll be chuffed! Maybe get a coffee as well. You'd think it would increase nerves but maybe it will somehow work in reverse, especially if beta blockers didn't work.

I have no advice but I am exactly the same. Tried and failed four times and have run out of money now. Maybe when I get a new job :)

I get tunnel vision. It's so weird.

Yes definitely agree with moving your head and checking mirrors constantly I did and passed first time.
TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/08/2020 10:23

Good luck! Yes, my dad told me to move my head when checking mirrors because that's what he failed for on his first try, and it totally worked. I got 10 minors and the instructor had to tell me to stop because a bus was pulling out and I was about to go round it anyway, but somehow I still passed.

LizzieVereker · 05/08/2020 10:27

Good luck OP! 🤞🏻💪🏻

KeithLeMonde · 05/08/2020 10:28

Just saw this and wanted to wish you good luck OP.

lampshadery · 05/08/2020 10:30

Good luck OP. Agree with moving your head even if you don't need to - it makes it obvious that you're looking!

MrsTaytodarling · 05/08/2020 10:37

Good luck op Smile
