Ban adverts for SUVs?

see www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53607147.
Personally I think it would be pointless, as I suspect people have already made up their mind that they want an over-sized car and and the lack of adverts will not change their minds.

Some newer SUVs are electric... this would be pointless. Cars are changing

That's why we need to start taxing weight and size too.

And also more realistically start taxing purely on congestion, so driving your 4wd SUV up a steep ungritted slope in middle of winter with 3 sheep in the back costs nothing, but driving to the school in it Chelsea costs lots.

zoomzoghedgehog · 03/08/2020 17:10

Oh sod off I'll buy what car I want to buy- I live in a rural area I have to drive there is no buses etc. Fed up of being dictated to.

zoomzoghedgehog · 03/08/2020 17:12

And for the record a fiesta wouldn't cut it for holidays or trips out. I also use my car for a business which requires me to carry a lot of industrial equipment and I need the space.
For all these on about emissions? Do you go on a polluting plane for your holidays?

Stupid. People are fully aware of what an SUV is, they don't need ads. If they want one, they will buy one.

They are only talking about banning the adverts!

I really don’t get the SUV hate

Oh, I do. Jealousy.

I love my 4x4, it's practical, good looking, so so comfortable, fuel efficient and worth every penny. Oh and I paid for it myself and I park like a boss.

ihatethecold · 03/08/2020 17:38

I'm planning on getting a hybrid SUV early next year. less emissions, fuel usage and low road tax. Whats wrong with that?

sirfredfredgeorge · 03/08/2020 17:50

It's heavy, so causes more road damage than necessary, and has more emissions than necessary, and does more damage in an accident.
It's large, so takes up more space on the road, and more space when parked.

Those are all mostly external costs on the driver, hence they need to pay more equitable amounts via increased taxation for their selfish choices.

Rosegoldmum · 03/08/2020 18:01

Once you have an SUV you never go back, wouldn’t think the advertisements make much difference. I don’t know anyone who sees a brand new Range in a car park and thinks they’re horrible Hmm

But why would people be jealous of a car?

That reminds me of when kids get teased and a parent says 'they're only jealous' to make the kid feel better about themselves!

VenusClapTrap · 03/08/2020 18:57

It also doesn’t sound like you’re 6ft or 6ft4 as we are: it really does do your back in getting a child into a low down car. Not to mention that DH doesn’t even fit behind he wheel of most smaller cars.

How odd. Is he very overweight? Dh is 6ft4 and he drives non SUV standard sized hatchbacks and saloons just fine. We even got him in a Figaro once without any issue.

I’ve driven SUVs when I’ve rented cars on holiday, and no, it hasn’t made me want one. Far from it. I’ve gone back to my fully electric saloon with great relish.

I do think Range Rovers are horrible, yes. Ugly great tanks that take up too much space, guzzle too much fuel, emit poison, and drive on the pavement along the narrow high street in my village because they can and fuck the kids trying to walk down that pavement on the way to school. Horrible. Yes.

ArriettyJones · 03/08/2020 19:11

Once you have an SUV you never go back,

I’d go back in a heartbeat if I ever stopped needing to cart so much equipment around. I love DD’s Prius. I’d much rather zip around in one of those. I still miss my first car which was a dinky three door with half my shoe collection on the back seat.

Don’t assume everyone thinks the same way you do.

JoJoSM2 · 03/08/2020 19:29

@VenusClapTrap DH is 6ft4 sporty and very handsome, thank you very much.

There is a lot of tax in fuel costs so the more you pollute, the more you get charged. Surely, old bangers doing a lot of mileage are the worst offenders.

MindyStClaire · 03/08/2020 19:41

@switswoo81

Is a tuscon classed as a SUV. We went to my parents for the weekend with a 2 and 5yo. 2yo rear facing and 5yo in a maxi Cosi hbb. No room in the middle for an adult. As the passenger my seat is quite far forward due to car seat. Boot had buggy, a few bags and a scooter and was completely full. Advertising did not influence our decision rather the fact that it is higher up so I find it easier to get in and out of and get kids out. I drove a Ka for 10 years and feckin loved it!
Yup. We're going to buy a Tucson or Sportage this week for exactly this reason - now we have DC2, we can't fit everything in our Astra to go visit my parents for a couple of nights. Never mind a longer trip or Christmas etc.

Our first car was a Fiesta, bloody loved that car but alas we need more boot space now.

Surely a 2L engine (bigger than anything I'm looking at) is just as polluting in an SUV as in an estate?

I do suspect most Range Rovers and the like are bigger than necessary but I don't know why SUVs are being targeted rather than large engines.

Okunoshima · 03/08/2020 19:54

I find it amusing when people claim to need a 4 wheel drive for living in a rural area having regularky driven hard Knott pass in a tiny Peugeot. I can't think of any roads that are not accessable for any modern car!

I think it's up to you if you want an SUV, but be aware that some people will always see them as uneccassarily huge and annoying. They take up more parking space, are wide so make passing on narrow roads difficult and being higher up the headlights blind people in lower cars.

sirfredfredgeorge · 03/08/2020 20:14

No, pollution is not related to engine size but work done, heavier less aerodynamic higher rolling resistance tyres cars require more work done.

Engine size of course has other interactions and because of such things work done does not directly compare, but because of the inefficiencies of an SUV it will always fare badly against an equivalent non SUV.

RiverFlowers · 04/08/2020 10:18

We have a Hyundai Tucson - before that we had a Focus. Now we have two young children and all the "stuff" that comes with them - we needed something bigger. Yeah, we could have squeezed everything into the Focus but it was just a pain and became like a game of Tetris trying to fit stuff in the boot.

The Tucson is great, big boot, loads of storage and plenty of leg and head room. Plus it's safe for my family. As for parking, we never have an issue parking it and it fits perfectly fine in a parking space!

I don't really get the SUV hate - people can have whatever car they want and can afford. SUV's are popular at the moment and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Rockbird · 04/08/2020 10:24

I don't drive an SUV, I drive an estate so no horse in this race. But it is very tiring being dictated to all the time. Can't do A because of B, can't do C because of D. What happened to just letting people live their lives without judgment?

As keeps being trotted out on MN, the worst thing you can do for the planet is have kids, even if you do transport them in a Fiesta so why don't we just butt out of peoples lives. If you want an SUV, buy an SUV.

PaddyF0dder · 04/08/2020 10:26

We’ve managed without an SUV (2 babies and a toddler then: 2 toddlers and a small kid now). Managed to fit twin buggy etc in.

Anyone who says you need an SUV is full of shit. They’re terrible for the environment and entirely antisocial.

Ok.......would you like a medal or something? I don't really care if you managed with a smaller car, the fact is we have the money to buy an SUV and make our lives a little bit easier - so we did.

People can have whatever car they want!

They are neither anti social or terrible for the environment - that is full of shit.

PaddyF0dder · 04/08/2020 11:07

@RiverFlowers

I don’t want a medal.

I do want people to have some environmental and social responsibility, and not hide behind lame excuses as a reason to be irresponsible.

Parkandride · 04/08/2020 11:20

@BarbaraofSeville

And it does take a large SUV to fit in 2 toddlers in their seats, a buggy and a weekly shop

Does it fuck like.

Grin what a perfect response.

How weird that people think others are jealous of their planet destroying car. I think an advertising ban could be a good step, we'll never hit our emission targets without actions. New large hybrid cars had 31.7% rise in co2 emissions compared with older cars and weight is one of the reasons why. We can't just pat ourselves on the back for moving away from petrol and use this to justify larger and larger vehicles.

It's not a lame excuse - we wanted a bigger car so we got one - I don't think people need to justify their decisions to anyone about why they want a bigger car!

I fail to see how an SUV is so damaging to the environment - there are loads of older cars still on the road that FAR are more polluting than a modern car - do you want to tell people they need to get rid of their older cars as well?

I will quite happily stick to my SUV, thanks

PaddyF0dder · 04/08/2020 12:27

@RiverFlowers

The environmental impact of SUVs is not up for debate. The damage they cause is an established fact, and personally I would never want to be in the position of arguing against facts.

And spare me the whataboutery.
