My brother is Melbourne. He thinks it's a load of shit too. He's in shock I think - says he can't believe he's living under a curfew.

NannyPhlegm · 02/08/2020 20:35

People involved in safeguarding seem to have been silenced, but I'm worried they will be scapegoated in cases like this.

I have no doubt that this will happen. And the same people who screamed about stay at home regardless of mitigating circumstances will be the first in line to rend their clothes, like they did over the Charlie Gard case.
@LivinLaVidaLoki You have my admiration and my sympathies. You were vocal on this thread in support of neglected children right from Day One. I hope you are emotionally supported in your job.

I think a lot of people who were silenced in the last few months will be the ones to bear the brunt of the anger when issues come tumbling out into the open. Missed cancer diagnoses, domestic abuse, suicides, mental health declining, and a number of things that I'm not even aware of in my cushioned life

Well had a lovely afternoon in neighbours garden celebrating a 70th birthday of another neighbour. Am a bit slaughtered to be honest. Got talking about schools there was a school governor there. The governors generally in schools are being left out of the loop completely, decisions made by staff unilaterally. They are concerned that they are not being consulted at all.

justasking111 · 02/08/2020 20:44

We were talking this afternoon about our neighbour who is in her 80`s has not stepped outside since March, uses a walker, you can phone her, she will not open a door nor a window just in case. So worried about her general health, mentally and physically. She has no children so no-one to care but neighbours who she is petrified of. She would not let social services in anyway, used to have a carer once a week, she cancelled her, she cancelled the gardener, no-one allowed in the garden just in case.

How many people like this across the UK who are slowly dying, going mad in isolation.

WalesAppearsToBeSlightlySaner · 02/08/2020 20:46

@NannyPhlegm -I think you're right. So many scared into silence who will suffer the wrath in the long run. It all feels like a game where no-one wins. I hope the next generation are watching and do a lot better job when it's their turn. Recent politics is a lesson in how to damage society, but I'd love to see something better built from the ashes.

TheOrchidKiller · 02/08/2020 21:15

@justasking111 I know you said your neighbour wouldn't have social services, but maybe worth ringing them? At work we're advised to speak to safeguarding if someone turns down services due to a fear of catching covid. It's possible they'll say she's got the mental capacity to decline services, but if someone is that terrified of life they need someone official to look into it.

You sound like a good neighbour.

Definitely what I’ve come across - I’m stepping down in September as I’m so sick of things being sent out to parents in the name of the governing body that we’ve not been consulted with and the head’s ridiculous dementoring to the n extent of wrapping so much hazard tape around the playground balance beam it looks like a candy cane.
99victoria · 02/08/2020 21:44

School governor here and that's not been my experience at all. We have been having regular governor's meetings using Teams and receiving constant communication from the school. We have been very much involved in all the decision making, receiving regular reports from the HT on how things are going and looking at all our options. I definitely believe we are in a good place for a full return in September - fingers crossed!

@IAintentDead every time I read your name I get a little bit closer to buying one of these. One day I'll crack!

Can some of the worst dementors go and live in Victoria? Especially the one who keeps going on about how the UK needs a more authoritarian approach. Sounds like it would be a match made in heaven. They’ve actually got the one hour exercise that so many were fantasising about. Seriously though, how grim. I really feel for anyone living there.

Have the diverse ramblings of this thread ever stretched to film recommendations? Because I’ve just watched Knives Out and it was sooooo good! I feel like I need to evangelise! And it’s free if you have amazon prime.

Watched knives out last week and found it good fun

Love it! I've not seen that before. Where is it from? I can't see from the pic. Although it does show up that my spellin' ate'nt right. (Correct TP spelling had already gone).

IAintentDead · 03/08/2020 00:15

I can't see Melbourne et al putting up with for long.

If the Brits (D's excepting) aren't very good rule followers I would say the Ozzies are even less constrained.

Having said that, they get done for speeding at 1k over the limit so... who knows.

After 30 odd years driving I got my first ever speeding ticket on the Ocean Road. Instant fine. BUT they gunned me from their car approaching from the opposite direction - something that doesn't (or certainly didn't) happen in the UK.

Nisa Local in Derbyshire puts up sign asking customers not to wear face masks in store
It is just days since new Covid-19 rules came in requiring shoppers to cover their faces

skeptile · 03/08/2020 02:24

I'm in Melbourne. Fucking nightmare here, with an insane premier with a poor human rights record. Military and police all over the city. Positive tests are being treated as deaths! Crazy propaganda. People forced to wear masks when there's no other people around! Health theatre. Our premier is a fascist.

skeptile · 03/08/2020 02:31

And you can't make this shit up - there was an internet shutdown just before the new restrictions were announced yesterday - government said it was a cyber attack! Trying to whip up panic. The health minister actually used the terms 'shock and awe' in the press conference, with regard to the intended effect of the new restrictions. They must think we're idiots - we all know the slaughter of the Iraqui people was based on a political lie.

WouldBeGood · 03/08/2020 04:41

@skeptile that sounds horrible, truly a nightmare.

I am abroad but don't say much about where because I'll get utterly roasted if most people knew. Not.supposed.to.travel.EVER. Might drop dead.
WalesAppearsToBeSlightlySaner · 03/08/2020 07:31

@skeptile - I didn’t realise things had got that bad. It sounds awful. It’s the fact that we never know what they’re aiming for or seriously considering that makes it worse. Keeps you off balance.
Transparency has gone out the window. I think they should publish thresholds and priorities e.g. if icu breaches this capacity pubs will be shit in the local area but schools will remain open or if a school of x size has y staff off with Covid it will be shut for 48 hours for a deep clean and to source supply teachers. Not saying these would be it, but I’d like to see much clearer focus on what next and why.

TheOrchidKiller · 03/08/2020 07:43

@skeptile that sounds terrible. Keep us posted.

Interesting perspective on masks. Had to smile at the reporting though, especially Kevin carrying his 4-pack of San Miguel. Not sure what that had to do with anything.

NannyPhlegm · 03/08/2020 07:46

@ Mrsfrumble I love Knives Out. I saw it in the cinema (in ye gold olde days) and wasn't expecting so many laugh out loud moments. So clever, so incisive.
That scene where the family argues about immigration over Marta's head and keeps inviting her to give her opinion, while not giving her a second to speak? That has happened to me in real life. I laughed and laughed in recognition of the situation. Fabulous film

torydeathdrug · 03/08/2020 07:54

Waving! Still alive, going out for Rishi today, horrendously busy.

NHS round 4 (or 5) plus trying to book swimming pool. Lockdown interrupted two of the children’s MenB vaccines (Superdrug not NHS) so they’ve only had one each - am attempting to sort that out today. Am also avoiding Superdrug because of shouty woman in the door ... will try Boots instead.

Hope you all had a tolerable at worst weekend.
