Can't believe I've never watched the sunrise...how long before sunrise should we get there?

I'm 38 and its dawned on me that I've never watched the sunrise, I mean I've been up at that time but never sat and watched it. So....I'm going to get the children really early tomorrow, pack some breakfast and go to the moors. So, it says sunrise is 5.45am tomorrow. What time should we get there, half an hour before? Dont want to get up that early and miss it!!

That’s a lovely idea Smile

I’d say half an hour should be good as long as you’re in situ, rather than parking up half an hour before. We went and watched the sunrise on the solstice this year, had salmon bagels and Buck’s Fizz, it was really nice to do. I had seen the sunrise quite a few times before but never sober so it was a bit of a new experience for me too!

Half an hour would be good But no less. On summer solstice I walked out and up into some moorland to see it. It’s complex around an hour before you’d still see stars (nautical dawn starts around an hour before sunrise) and it can be magical to have seen that before sunrise.

But was bothered by some fools who had bagels and champagne GrinGrin

Top tip, do it in the winter so you don't have to get up so early.

I like your style, Ken. (Not a lark.)

Wait until August.. the sunrise will be later!!

Proudtocare · 30/07/2020 19:37

Ok, so I think it will take us 20 mins to get there so looking at leaving 4.45 ish. How on earth am I going to get my teenager up, although he seems up for it. My dh gets up 4am for work most days so I'm sure we can do this for one day!! I'm also packing wetsuits just in case we fancy a dip in the river afterwards! Quite excited now!!

Yes on Soltice I said something along the lines of ‘bloody hell why is it so early tomorrow?’ As we set the alarm. Duh.

TurnOffTheTv · 30/07/2020 19:42

5.45am is really late, where are you?

HeronLanyon · 30/07/2020 19:44

Have fun op - it’s special. We had a long discussion walking home whether preferred sunrise or sunset, generally, and we both agreed on sunrise ! I’ve probably only seen it maybe 30 times in my life (wild guess based on nothing) but many many hundreds If sunsets.
Swim after sounds good.

HeronLanyon · 30/07/2020 19:45

Well lands end is 5.51 tomorrow so ‘east of there’.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/07/2020 19:49

One of the highlights of my life was watching the sun rise over Mt Everest. Incredible. Grin

Worth the cold... there was ice on the inside of the window in the hostel!

ilovetrees30 · 30/07/2020 19:52

Sounds amazing. We saw the sunrise from the top of Haleakala volcano in Maui last year. It was an amazing sight. Enjoy your morning.

Proudtocare · 30/07/2020 19:54

We will be going on Exmoor. Hope I looked at the right time?

Oh bog and ilovetrees - magical !

HeronLanyon · 30/07/2020 20:00

Op ‘dark sky’ app shows ‘exmoor’ as 5.41. Hope there isn’t too much mist/low cloud (looks clear).

Enjoy!! I do like a good sunset myself!! More my time of day!

Wherewhatwhy · 30/07/2020 22:07

Sounds like a lovely thing to see together. I did smile at your use of 'dawned on me' Smile

Proudtocare · 31/07/2020 03:44

So, its 3.43am and I'm up!! Got the breakfast packed up. Now I just have to wake up the children but think I'll wait until a little longer! #excited
