My DC is moving out soon and I'm compiling a list of household must haves to buy as a household essential kit.
So far I have

Cable ties
Gaffer tape
Gorilla glue
Emergency toilet roll
Set of Allen keys
Sellotape
All-purpose cleaner
Magic sponge
Cleaning cloths
First aid kit
Tool kit
Batteries
Black sacks

I might be wrong but I think the fire service no longer advise blankets and extinguishers. I think they advise you call and get out rather than waste time trying to put the fire out. Like I said - I might be wrong

Wine

giantangryrooster · 30/07/2020 14:03

Tweezers

Screwdriver like picture, all in one.

If she is moving into rented it must already have a mains connected CO2 and smoke detector. Probably more than one. I wouldn’t be buying my own if my kids were intending on moving in to a place without them - I would be strongly advising they don’t move in

Lifeisabeach09 · 30/07/2020 14:05

Gaffer tape and cable ties....very Fifty Shades. Grin

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 30/07/2020 14:05

Flat and Philips head screwdrivers
A hammer and assorted nails
A tape measure
Batteries
(Although all of these can be bought as you go along if needs be)

A couple of saucepans
A decent frying pan
A sieve or colander
A utensil set / sharp knives / cutlery
Dinner and side plates, bowls and cups

Ds is moving out after the summer (into halls) and he was also talking about a set of basic herbs and spices, in addition to salt, pepper, condiments.

powkin · 30/07/2020 14:11

@FreezerBird your post made me giggle!

Second the carbon monoxide detector.
AA batteries
Gin
TONIC
TEA
Ice cube tray if there isn’t one
Multi-way adaptor plug
Cling film
Foil
Can opener
Bottle opener
Jar opener if she’s feeble like me (my mum bought me one and I scoffed and I still have it 10 years later and use it all the time)
Toilet cleaner
Love a bit of Kilrock descaler for a hard water area myself - so satisfying
Brita jug - stops you replacing kettle every 2 minutes (again depends on your area)
Hand soap
Washing up liquid
Washing up brush
Micro fibre cloths
Bed sheets
Emergency chocolate (for immediate consumption)

Babypug · 30/07/2020 14:11

Isn't it the whole point working out what you need by yourself?! Shops online and in high streets are open all the time so they'll hardly be unable to get something. Bin off no essentials and get things that they won't get themselves

powkin · 30/07/2020 14:12

@mosquitofeast I may have done once?! Some people are obsessed with them. Just annoying if you want to move something later on.

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 30/07/2020 14:12

A dcat...
Grin
Or even better 2...

powkin · 30/07/2020 14:13

Ooh bin bags
Little bin for their room if there isn’t one.

Lots of this depends on where they are moving to and why and with whom.

osprey24 · 30/07/2020 14:18

do not get an adapter plug, they are dangerous, really easy to overload them!

TheGreatWave · 30/07/2020 14:24

PIL got us something like this when we first got the house. It is fairly useful as it covers us for most jobs. We have expanded over the years but it is still our go to.

If you've been captured on cctv buying all that lot, I wouldn't fancy your chances if there was a local murder Confused

That’s a pozy cross screwdriver

Lockdownseperation · 30/07/2020 14:51

I’ve had my on place(s) for over 10 years and have never needed to buy a lot of that stuff.

Have they asked for your list? Do they want this stuff?

Livpool · 30/07/2020 14:51

I don't even know what cable ties are so doubt we have any! I'm 40 so now feel like a failure 😱

Emergency alcohol?!

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 30/07/2020 14:57

Will obviously no murder going on..
There isn't a flask on the list!

Pebblexox · 30/07/2020 14:58

A heavy duty torch incase of power cut.

missmouse101 · 30/07/2020 15:01

Stop smothering the child! Let them work it out. An internet connection, a Wilko gift card and a notepad and pen would be fine.

Happynow001 · 30/07/2020 15:01

Personally, I'd like a robot, like Centennial Man... 😁

VaggieMight · 30/07/2020 15:01

Pizza cutter

Tin opener

I'm not sure providing everything they'll ever need is that helpful though, part of life learning is getting stuck for things then making sure you have them. That said, it is a nice gift idea.
