Masks outdoors is just nuts. I can't believe people are rolling over and accepting this as normal or logical.

ButterMeCrumpets · 31/07/2020 11:28

What is the point of masks outside? Is it because they feel they 'have to do something'?

My feeling is that if more and more rules are made that don't stack up logically people will start to ignore all of them including those that do make sense and help stop the spread.

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 11:29

It made me feel quite anxious living in a tourist city the thought of it happening here! I don't think that would happen here though. For all the putting down of the UK, it does seem to be a little more thought through..

torydeathdrug · 31/07/2020 11:32

it's complete desperation isn't it?

Allflightscancelled · 31/07/2020 11:33

It IS complete desperation.

IAintentDead · 31/07/2020 11:44

@Allflightscancelled

Masks in outdoor places in France – madness. Clearly just running out of new ideas to reduce cases any further. And that may be because there aren't any options left, we've already done everything practical (and impractical) that can have any effect. We may all have to be brave and live with that.

On the dentists front, they don't seem over keen to do any actual work, do they? Despite saying they were during the height of lockdown.

I've just had to fill in 9 (!) forms online ahead of having my crappy temporary filling on Monday. Bonkers. Many questions about likelihood of having covid, many others about medical history, all of which I have answered many MANY times before at this particular practice. I don't know how much more they need to know about the bones I broke 20 years ago, or the breast cancer I had ten years ago Hmm

For a temporary, I would order a kit from Amazon.
I Lost a crown and on the NHS all they would offer is a total removal, or covering the stub with a filling, which I chose but it regularly wears down and a new dentist in the practice won't top it up.
I bought the kit and did it myself and built it up in layers. It's not brilliant but it works - and appears to be exactly the same as the dentist uses.
Willow2017 · 31/07/2020 11:50

On a more positive note - we've just booked a week in a lovely property in Northumberland for scottish holidays in October. Our last THREE holidays have been cancelled firstly down to Thomas Cook's collapse and then covid, s fingers crossed this goes ahead.
Let me know the date so i can stand on the border amd shake my fist at you as you come back🤣🤣 bringing all those English germs back, hurrumph! don't you know there is an apocalypse on?

sitting on my break at work in er...england😃

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 11:55

In the Nord department adjacent to Belgium, the government’s top official said “reinforced measures” would be announced Friday, possibly making masks compulsory outdoors, in response to a surge in cases across the border.

In the Guardian as well...

That is exactly what a lot of people believe. That it's out there, in the air, just waiting to get you.
Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 11:58

Keeps updating..

The mayor of Saint-Malo, whose walled city has drawn tens of thousands of French tourists who opted to stay in the country for the summer holidays, said masks were now mandatory inside the old city and on the ramparts for everyone aged 11 and over.

Oh those windy ramparts...

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 12:01

Fingers crossed the UK steers clear of such madness. At least here for example to start with outside was encouraged as low risk. I can kind of cope with things which make sense but not with extreme measures out of desperation

Just spoke with neighbour who is going on about how good the Spanish were with mask wearing. Politely agreed.

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 12:03

I notice Japan the avid mask wearers, are having a spike in cases.

This is what I don't understand any more -the sheer numbers of people who are blindly and unquestioningly following every instruction they're given. I'm not convinced there's going to be mass ignoring of the restrictions in the north - I think the majority will comply. I honestly feel today as if this is something we're not going to get out of in any meaningful sense until there's a vaccine. And even if that's as early as next year, I think that by then our society is going to have changed for good. I'm finding it impossible to see one positive thing about the future, right now.
Allflightscancelled · 31/07/2020 12:16

@IAintentDead I might try that kit, thank you!

I might also bite the bullet and pay privately, though it grieves me to do so

I have given up fathoming what people think or really do not think but like sponge bob absorb the crap they hear from across their fences.

Funny OH NHS dentist has not heard from his dentist despite phoning twice during lockdown with an infection he treated himself with loads of mouthwash but it is rumbling away.

Me private, an e-mail every week reminding me they are open.

justasking111 · 31/07/2020 12:29

Maybe we should march in our areas and say yep it is here, yep be careful when you can. Yep sadly more people will test positive.

To be honest shutting down cities worries me, civil unrest and all that.

Pleasedontdothat · 31/07/2020 12:34

I’m losing the will to live now ...

torydeathdrug · 31/07/2020 12:35

no one has a plan - clearly lockdown is effective at reducing transmission/cases/deaths but it doesn't eradicate the virus. At the start of all this I asked ppl what they thought would happen afterwards ... no answer just lockdown harder ... well that worked well for Spain didn't it. Now it's oh just wear masks more ... well that's worked well for Spain hasn't it?

seriously it's ludicrous ... the original imperial model showed repeated cycles of national lockdown - is that what they want? ftalphaville.ft.com/2020/03/17/1584439125000/That-Imperial-coronavirus-report--in-detail-/

Keep doing that with its massive costs (20k death already), economic ruin, disrupted education, devastating effect on healthcare, social cohesion & trust? Sooner or later even the most insulated privileged middle class dementor will feel the pain. What will they suggest when it isn't just other people suffering so they can stay 'safe'?

I’m already there- I see how face masks could turn into nooses when I close my eyes these days (would never act on it, working with GP as well) which is not fun as way to live
countrygirl99 · 31/07/2020 12:42

I've spent too much time at my (private) dentist this week. They do so e NHS work, mainly children and UC claimants. Chatting with the receptionist she was saying the NHS isn't sanctioning a lot of work so she keeps having to phone people to cancel appointments. I was very grateful to mine for staying late and doing emergency investigations and a temp filling after hours yesterday. Need to see a root canal specialist now to see if a fratured tooth is saveable.

Allflightscancelled · 31/07/2020 12:43

The prime minister says the rules on face coverings will be extended "to other indoor settings where you're likely to come into contact with people you do not normally meet such as museums, galleries, cinemas and places of worship. We now recommend face coverings are worn in these settings and this will become enforceable in law from the 8 August," Boris says

So that's me not going to any of these places then. Same. I fancied a bit of culture

Allflightscancelled · 31/07/2020 12:43

Shame, not 'same'

justasking111 · 31/07/2020 12:44

The original plan herd immunity was simple and historically works, all the lockdown, masks, and hiding in the wings gloves, is just a sop.
