I'm in Yorkshire so defo think Leicestershire is in the midlands, although people in Newcastle probably think I'm in the midlands too.

I hate the unfairness of all this. We'll quite possibly dodge any local restrictions here simply because its a semi-rural low density housing area & a bit of a way from anywhere, whereas much more vulnerable communities will be restricted on and off for the rest of eternity.

torydeathdrug · 31/07/2020 09:50

Bloody hell @110APiccadilly that’s impressive for Wales (& surprising).

I’ve given up any hope of pools being open for children, not even for swimming lessons. It’s all a pile of shite.

BakewellTarts · 31/07/2020 09:50

Also on communication. DH is tech savy. He knows about this because i told him. Missed all the social media and news. Not sure how it was on the radio this morning. If the govt is serious about getting the messaging right they have work to do. If they missed DH they have certainly missed others less tech aware.

Here's this morning's pandemic weirdness chez Allflights. My gold filling dropped out last night (despite dentist selling it to my by saying it'd last forever) and that essentially means I have half a tooth missing. It is a huge filling.

On the phone to the dentist:

Dentist: we can only offer phone triage
Me: I don't need phone triage. Half my tooth is missing, I know that
Dentist: Well, we can perhaps do a temporary filling
Me: What's the difference between doing that and a proper job?
Dentist: It's all we can offer
Me: Well how long will it last
Dentist: We don't know, maybe an hour, maybe a year
Me: Well I'll have that then
Dentist: Fine, come in on Monday at 9.15

Risk-wise, how on earth is it better to do me possibly many repeat temporary fillings, compared with just one visit for a proper job?

CruCru · 31/07/2020 10:05

That sucks Allflightscancelled.

I like JSP. The comments underneath it were mental.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 31/07/2020 10:05

That's so weird, @allflightscancelled: I needed a filling and have just had it done (properly, not a temporary one). The dentist has been open since mid-June.

justasking111 · 31/07/2020 10:08

It is (sadly) cases and until the death rate goes up massively people will assess their own risk. That's what I intend to do.

BlackberryViolet · 31/07/2020 10:17

Love some of the comments on that article about the manager at Birds. Think they may have shot themselves in the foot but then the dementors come out, and then “a distinct whiff of Gregg's about most of the people in this comments section.” And there you have it, pure snobbery.

torydeathdrug · 31/07/2020 10:17

Feel horribly anxious today. Awful.

Allflightscancelled · 31/07/2020 10:24

@ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson Have you? Was it NHS? That's interesting, I wonder if I should shop around?

Blackberry snobbery indeed. That poor woman at Birds. She sounds like a lovely member of staff, who is (was) a really asset to the business.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 31/07/2020 10:26

No, it was private, I'm afraid (probably highly relevant).

Allflightscancelled · 31/07/2020 10:35

Yeah, Professor I bet that is highly relevant.

I imagine if I ask when I get there, they might miraculously be able to do it if I go private. TBH I might even do that, the filling is so bloody huge, literally one whole side of the tooth (I gnash in my sleep and break 'em Sad)...

Mrsfrumble · 31/07/2020 10:40

Ahhhh, Bird’s! I’m another Derby lass with fond memories of Bird’s. Their bread rolls were referred to as “Bird’s rolls” in our house in order to distinguish them from inferior rolls from any other establishment. Hopefully the poor woman will be snapped up by another employer who appreciates her initiative and dedication to customer service.

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 10:41

Interesting about Wales. they don't require masks in shops either. Wonder about the swing from dementory 5 miles rules...

ineedaholidaynow · 31/07/2020 10:42

If you gnash in your sleep @Allflightscancelled do you have a mouth guard?

BogRollBOGOF · 31/07/2020 10:42

When it is requested that your (autistic) child wears a face covering for a medical appointment.
His face was covered. Literally.
He could see through the fabric of the buff.

There are reasons why I'm not encouraging face covering or we will never see his face again... he quite liked the I can see you and you can't see me.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/07/2020 10:45

We've got a Birds nearby. People queue for ages to get their Christmas supplies from them.

It's awful that the manager was sacked fir supporting regular, elderly customers.

While I'm finding contactless convenience, it should not be to the exclusion of those (mainly elderly or disabled) who don't or can't.

Allflightscancelled · 31/07/2020 10:46

@Ineedaholidaynow, I have got a mouthguard now, yes thanks. But I fear much damage was done before I got it Sad

Drivingdownthe101 · 31/07/2020 10:55

Yep, it transpires through a debacle my mum has with them that our dentist is seeing private patients but not NHS ones (unless extreme emergency).

torydeathdrug · 31/07/2020 11:06

We have a private dentist who said (last week) they weren’t planning to open for another 8 weeks! Useless.

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 11:07

In France, some areas are making mask wearing compulsory in outdoor public places...

"Some French cities are expected to introduce additional face mask requirements. From Friday in Orleans, in central France, masks will be required in open-air markets and after 9pm along the Loire river, where crowds of people have been gathering in the evenings. The mayors of Bayonne and the nearby Atlantic resort of Biarritz also announced face masks would be compulsory in their city centres starting next week".

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 11:08

Seems odd as transmission low risk outdoors.

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 11:09

Our dentist (private, all could get here) is not for routine only emergency at present. Still paying insurance...must ask about that...

Allflightscancelled · 31/07/2020 11:16

Masks in outdoor places in France – madness. Clearly just running out of new ideas to reduce cases any further. And that may be because there aren't any options left, we've already done everything practical (and impractical) that can have any effect. We may all have to be brave and live with that.

On the dentists front, they don't seem over keen to do any actual work, do they? Despite saying they were during the height of lockdown.

I've just had to fill in 9 (!) forms online ahead of having my crappy temporary filling on Monday. Bonkers. Many questions about likelihood of having covid, many others about medical history, all of which I have answered many MANY times before at this particular practice. I don't know how much more they need to know about the bones I broke 20 years ago, or the breast cancer I had ten years ago Hmm

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 11:21

It's so hot in Europe too now. Do you think it would give tan marks so you would get a permanent pale face mask?!

Best go ring elderly neighbour in a minute. She got back yesterday from Majorca / Mallorca. I'm wondering if she might need food as won't be able to go out now. Not keen to go either but she can have some of ours perhaps.
