That's an interesting read, Livin

CupCupGoose · 31/07/2020 07:26

I'm so sorry for those of you having more restructions put on you. It's ridiculous and unfair.

I had a call from my dentist yesterday to say they are finally doing children's check ups so we have an appointment in 2 weeks. We were supposed to be seen the first week of lock down so was obviously cancelled. Our play park is finally open even though 2 weeks ago out councillor told us it wouldn't ever be possible to open due to all the restrictions. Aparently all those restrictions were some hand sanitiser. Hmm. What a dick.

TheOrchidKiller · 31/07/2020 07:27

@HelenaDove I saw that about the Birds manager last night & couldn't believe it!

@MagdaS
"People do have plans and lives".

Absolutely, and it's becoming an increasing challenge to plan anything- childcare, a dayout, a well-deserved break away, attempting to visit family.

Can I ask a daft question? Was it Wansock who announced the local lockdowns on Twitter? I'm guessing it was but seem to have missed it.

Gutted for my friend who has just begun to conquer her covid anxiety & go out. She'd booked a break in Manchester in August because she felt safe there & could see family. Even if the restrictions are lifted by then I can see her still being in panic mode & cancelling.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/07/2020 07:32

With news that a town near here is on the list (near ish) the local dementoring here is ridiculous now. Everyone screaming we will be next!!

Our cases are coming down we average 1 a week or less in a population of 140k. There were 5 last week due to a small outbreak in the hospital.

Someone said our local chief medical officer(?) Had said we need to be careful as we are on the verge of local lockdown.

Firstly, we don't have a local cmo we have the director of public health and the chief exec of the hospital. Both of whom have said the local picture is positive overall but we mustn't let our guard down.

What fucking planet are these people on??!!

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 31/07/2020 07:54

Flowers to everyone whose plans have been messed up by this incompetent, racist shower of a government. (Though I do also believe the Government would announce similar changes at 9pm on Christmas Eve, once they were sure everyone had spent the money.)

We’re supposed to be going away for a couple of nights in ten days’ time, I have no idea whether we’ll be able to or not.

SomewhereEast · 31/07/2020 07:58

The reporting of this is awful. The Guardian was getting better but their rolling news feed is now claiming that "huge swathes" (nope) of Northern England are "back in lockdown" (also nope). Also Leicester is apparently in the North now. Who knew?

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 08:15

Morning!

Those poor people having that announced overnight

Just looked on the BBC...doesn't say they need to stay in the area does it, just not mix with households at home, so presumably someone could travel to Wales if they wanted...

On the playgroups that does sound annoying, especially as small children don't seem to pass on the virus and a large hall is not confined is it..

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 08:16

Sounds like the Guardian reporting from Down South where the North is a kind of mystery...Wink sounds about right for them...

lljkk · 31/07/2020 08:24

consider this a warning shot for Christmas eve

I hate stories like this making me sympathise with the govt

check their data before imposing restrictions: "Waited too long!"
crack down suddenly? "Not early enough!" "Too short notice!"
changing rules adapted to most recent conditions: "Too confusing!"
strict un-moving rules: "Too inflexible!" "Unnecessary!"

110APiccadilly · 31/07/2020 08:42

What on earth were you meant to do if you were staying with family in one of those areas and the kids were already in bed asleep?!

BakewellTarts · 31/07/2020 08:43
Remember the cashless bakery i linked earlier this week?

Well get a load of this

www.nottinghampost.com/news/nottingham-news/birds-bakery-manager-sacked-taking-4378325
As a Derby lass and am so sad Birds has taken this stance. They were my go to for a treat as a child. That store manager sounds like a lovely woman who cares about her customers.

Bollss · 31/07/2020 08:45

@110APiccadilly

Going to be terrible for community cohesion, but I do agree they'd have done exactly the same thing Christmas Eve. I'm not sure it is racist by design, just standard level incompetence I suspect. I also think compliance will be low.

It's also beyond cruel. People have plans and lives. This sort of toying with them is insane.

See, I don't think they would. Boris only does what's popular doesn't he? Cancelling Christmas would not be popular. Now cancelling Eid? I'd say the majority of the people who vote for him don't even know that it's Eid today so it won't affect his popularity.

Also cancelling Christmas would affect him and most of his cabinet. I don't see it.

SockYarn · 31/07/2020 08:46

I generally don't agree with much that Janet Street-Porter has to say for herself but I saw a piece from her earlier and totally agree.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8576889/When-did-policy-flattening-curve-ruin-lives.html

The message HAS gone from "flatten the curve, protect the NHS" to "nobody must ever get covid". That's just not achievable. People are going to get it. The best line in the whole article is "Until there is a vaccine, we remain at some risk but the public must be treated like grown-ups, not children, and allowed to decide for themselves how to live their lives."

Don't get me started on hte mask thing, it's just too depressing. And a friend here in Scotland who works as a fitness instructor won't be back to work until 14th September - six months after her last class. Numbers in Scotland are now ridiculously low.

On a more positive note - we've just booked a week in a lovely property in Northumberland for scottish holidays in October. Our last THREE holidays have been cancelled firstly down to Thomas Cook's collapse and then covid, so fingers crossed this goes ahead.

To be fair our medical director or whatever said I think last week we absolutely wouldn't be under local lockdown and yet here we are. I don't trust anyone anymore. I am tres annoyed.

@110APiccadilly

What on earth were you meant to do if you were staying with family in one of those areas and the kids were already in bed asleep?!
I would have done absolutely nothing, let the kids sleep on.

Interestingly if this does happen on Christmas Eve then this is exactly what will happen in the BakewellTarts household (likely to have sister, nephew and mum staying none of whom are that close to us). And then on Christmas day I will feed them before they go and we will exchange presents because the horse has bolted!!!

glotterbug · 31/07/2020 08:47

Checking in, crap signal on campsite, will catch up!

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 08:51

It is quite concerning that these things can just be brought in overnight like that. Leaves everyone wondering what might happen next

RubberDinghyRapids · 31/07/2020 08:52

Is Leicester not in the north then? It's above Winchester... Grin

Drivingdownthe101 · 31/07/2020 08:55

Haha, Leicester is in the south of the midlands so I guess if we were going for a true north/south divide Leicester would be in the south.
I’m on the north Leicestershire border with Derbyshire and reckon I’m almost bang in the middle!

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 31/07/2020 08:58

@SockYarn I rather like Janet. Couldn’t stand her when I was younger (socially conditioned to think she was a loud-mouth woman), but these days - often on the money. She wrote a book about “rules of life” I got from the library and it was really good. Keep meaning to grab a 1p copy from amazon.

I’m feeling meh about everything today. In our rapidly divided world I found out this morning a friend has been able to pay off her mortgage, redo rate and buy a campervan during lockdown. I’ve earned less than £1000.

I don’t want people to die - have risk factors myself. But I want to earn. This is all fucking bollocks .

SockYarn · 31/07/2020 09:01

We used to live in the home counties - someone I knew referred to Leamington Spa as "up north". Anywhere north of Birmingham was another planet.

lljkk · 31/07/2020 09:01

bloody hell, that poor manager at the bakery.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/07/2020 09:02

@TrustTheGeneGenie I think I just find it annoying that of a population of 140k, 1 case a week is enough to demand a lockdown.

But you're absolutely right, that you can't really trust anything they say.

MaxNormal · 31/07/2020 09:02

Leicester is over 250 miles south of me so saying its in The North seems a stretch.

110APiccadilly · 31/07/2020 09:44

On the plus side for Wales, showing suddenly non dementor tendencies, our FM is lifting social distancing for under 11s (most people I know haven't been making their kids distance for weeks, but still), and allowing gyms, swimming pools, and - wait for it - soft play to reopen.

Still no meeting people indoors, but I can't wait to get to the gym!! Ours did a video the other day showing they'd moved equipment into the hall to be able to comply with distancing so I reckon they'll reopen pretty quickly. (Though no classes I imagine, given the hall is full of equipment!)
