Can't help but wonder this morning why everyone is so obsessed with a second lockdown?
Surely if there is one thing the rise in cases in Europe etc have taught us.....LOCKDOWN DOESN'T WORK.

All it does is delay the inevitable, and we cannot delay it indefinitely. So surely now its just a case of taking sensible precautions and cracking on with it?

110APiccadilly · 30/07/2020 07:46

Interestingly there's a few people in the schools threads suggesting online provision plus money directly to parents. I wondered how long schools would need to be closed before people started to want the money directly to educate their children with!

I think the teaching unions may have missed a trick here. A future government looking to save millions could provide primarily online education, which as far as I can tell would meet their legal obligations, sell off the schools and sack a load of teachers. I am not saying this is a good idea! But it could be a very appealing idea to a cash strapped government, and the unions have played into their hands by suggesting children don't need to be back in physical schools in the normal way.

Orangeblossom78 · 30/07/2020 07:48

It's because they are panicking about a second wave in Europe I think and equating that with another lockdown possibly...

countrygirl99 · 30/07/2020 08:00

I'm beginning to get the impression that some people won't be happy until we are wearing masks even when we are tucked up in bed.

Well you can’t be too careful...

I’ve just seen on FB a woman swimming in what looks like the sea - whilst wearing one.

Higher risk of drowning than dying of Covid caught during that swim...

Orangeblossom78 · 30/07/2020 08:15

Did you see the wee girl who fell down a waterfall and was fine? That was a scary but good story...

ButterMeCrumpets · 30/07/2020 08:20

I am early for an appointment so I have parked on the road outside someone's house for a bit.

Given some of the threads on MN do you think I should look out for a thread from someone saying there is a strange women sat in a car outside my house and should I call the police Grin

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 30/07/2020 08:24

Logging it with 101 as I type sobbing and shaking whilst banging a pot-lid for the NHS.

@Orangeblossom78 I saw that 😲 and was trying to work out how the HELL she reached the bottom without incident!

Let’s hope so, it’ll make a change from ‘second wave’ posts Grin

Am i the only person who has become ultra conscious of how many surfaces and 'things' I touch? I noticed it in the gym this morning - have always wiped down benches but before Covid, dumbbells, barbells, plates etc were just put back. At the gym this morning, surrounded by all the tape and new signs and extra 'sanitising stations' i found myself spraying everything all over then putting things back whilst holding them in the paper towel stuff so they weren't recontaminated by my non-existent virus infected paws. This surely can't go on for long? Please tell me it can't go on for long? !!!

NowYouListenToMeFella · 30/07/2020 08:28

Butter what I wouldn't give for a good parking thread. Could you edge up a bit so you are blocking the drive?

There'll be a diagram, log it with 101, get a rugby team to bounce it up the road and put a potato up the exhaust!

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 30/07/2020 08:28

@Blobby10 given most of us have survived the gym equipment liberally Coates with fecal matter... we’ll get through this.

I’m pretty good about not touching my face or water bottle nozzle!

Orangeblossom78 · 30/07/2020 08:30

Just read this - made me think of who mainly dies of the virus and who needs protected and it is of course the 80s and 90 year olds etc

www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/u8n2cbq8dy/coronavirus-care-homes-the-ones-they-couldnt-save

This narrative of saving the very elderly from dying...i am not sure it sits comfortably with me in some ways.

Blobby10 · 30/07/2020 08:31

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane I've survived the past 5 years of people coughing up their lungs all over the equipment then not wiping it and didn't even catch a cold ! It just feels like Big Brother is watching me and will pounce if I don't disinfect properly Grin. Although I'm sure the two young lads who were there at the same time this morning didn't bother to even wipe the bars or bench they were using Hmm. Do wash my hands as soon as I get home now though - wherever I've been! Grin

I could edge forward and then I would be blocking someone in Grin
Orangeblossom78 · 30/07/2020 08:35

The gyms and pools make us do this stuff right now, mine is the same, maybe just try doing it on autopilot perhaps...it is like a constant reminder I understand. also shops making you do your hands with gel.

It feels like an onset of OCD type stuff for most of us i think!

BamboozledandBefuddled · 30/07/2020 08:43

I'd love to think that but I'm struggling Sad

Took a couple of days break from MN and feel better for it. My anxiety about going out without a mask was getting to the point where I wouldn't have been fit to drive to a supermarket. (Which would solve the mask problem I suppose.) This area is still being very compliant Hmm I was the only maskless customer in Aldi and only saw one other face in Tesco. I was tutted and muttered at in Tesco and one woman was obviously going to say something. She glared up at me from her full 5' 3", opened her mouth and took a deep breath. Not the best thing to do when you're wearing a fabric mask and I left her choking and spluttering while I retreated to the next aisle giggling hysterically Grin

Found the whole thing too depressing for words and will be avoiding shops except for essentials. I did my bit for the economy though by spending a huge amount of money with a seller on Etsy this week. Very noble of me! DH does not share my opinion and said rude things about my spending habits Grin

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 30/07/2020 08:55

IME men don’t tend to clean gym equipment ever. Why would they bother when us women will do it anyway?

MaudesMum · 30/07/2020 08:59

I might have muttered on here before about the barkingness of re-opening libraries without allowing people to browse bookshelves - unlike bookshops, which seem to have found it was possible. Weirdly enough a neighbouring Council (Wiltshire) seems to have decided it is possible - they will be opening several of their libraries soon, and allow people to actually wander around the bookshelves. Admittedly, people are still being asked to limit the number of books they take off the shelves and put back, and can only do so for a limited period of time (so there's space for everyone), but it still seems more like a library! So, how have different Councils risk-assessed and come up with different solutions?

ButterMeCrumpets · 30/07/2020 09:01

Just been for a wander. Think built up area, road with shops all along it.

There are covid signs saying keep left on the pavement. Ummm WTF!. So I keep left and pass everyone coming the other way who walk right past me because the pavement isn't even a meter wide. Like NORMAL. I am thinking was the point in that? None 😆

Now I am sat on a bench Grin. My actions today could set off a lot of threads Wink

Orangeblossom78 · 30/07/2020 09:02

The main thing I resent about our pool atm is making us go out a concrete fire escape through an underground car park, which feels dark and unsafe.

I wouldn't like to go there early morning or evening, and recently an alcoholic was found dead there.

All to prevent us going out the same (large, automatic) doors as the ones coming in.

Ibake · 30/07/2020 09:07

Morning all. @Orangeblossom78 if I were you I'd give them feedback about that. A lot of these rules are being implemented by people not experienced in risk assessment as they attempt to implement hastily written guidelines. All they're thinking about is Covid and have forgotten to consider other risks.

If you point out to them the danger they're putting people in you might find they reconsider. Especially if you highlight examples nearby where this system doesn't take place eg the shops. Also point out that customers have to touch a door on the way out whereas no one is touching anything when they use the automatic doors.

Littlebelina · 30/07/2020 09:12

Why don't some of these organisations have people experienced in risk assessments though? OK, I wouldn't expect a small independent shop to have a staff member trained but a leisure centre or gym surely should be be writing/reviewing risk assessments on a regular basis? I've said it before but the inability of people generally being able to risk assess/read guidelines properly drives me a bit bonkers.
