Sorry not been about much, hope everyone is doing OK.

I'm getting really fed up with the hardcore dementoring about the rise in cases. No one seems to be able to comprehend that this the rise is mostly pillar 2 tests, which is community, targeted and surveillance testing. So for instance where there has been an outbreak, inviting everyone for a test, so picking up people who wouldn't have necessarily had a test previously in an area where there has been an outbreak.

Pillar 1 tests, those with a clinical need is only 90 positive tests today.

Also pillar 2 is mostly PHE and they haven't exactly been spot on with their data.

Either way, people with a clinical need for a test has fallen massively.

Its giving me a headache trying to keep going over this with them.

Ibake · 29/07/2020 18:37

I know @loki I just keep telling people to look at hospital admissions and ITU beds.

I also keep telling people that
Pillar 2 tests going up is a good thing, shows the system is working. It's a losing battle though.

Was supposed to be at my bake club tomorrow night - picnic down at the park, all precautions taken but dementoring going on re not sharing the cakes which is the whole fucking point of bake club so I've made an excuse and am not going.

I'm only hanging around with people who aren't idiots for the foreseeable so sorry guys, you're stuck with me for a bit longer yet!

ISaySteadyOn · 29/07/2020 18:38

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane

Schools aren’t really a problem. Just hire a governess and convert your spare spare room. It’s not rocket science ladies. 😂
Actually, in fairness, if I did have a spare room, DD1 would love a governess. Smile

I heard the Today programme this morning, which I don't usually hear - but I was doing a lot of driving. It was so depressing - it made it sound as if a second wave was already happening, on our shores. "Slight uptick" will be pounced on and blown out of all proportion. And people will believe it because it's good, sensible Radio 4. Sad

I went into a motorway service area, with visor and no mask. Smile Fortunately I haven't seen any masked people out and about.

A bake club. That sounds like absolute heaven. Is it like the Mary berry version of a book club?
mightbealittlebitmad · 29/07/2020 18:47

I should stay away from the CV board, it's totally depressing. People actively enjoying planning for a second lockdown in the middle of winter, saying schools won't/shouldn't go back.

I can't do another lockdown, I just can't. I'm on week 2 of the summer holidays and really struggling today. Things have improved a lot for me, I pretty much have my life back now but now I live in fear of it being taken away again.

I'm avoiding anywhere that requires me to wear a mask unless it's essential and short i.e. trip to the shop on the way home from work to buy wine.

bookworm14 · 29/07/2020 18:50

That schools thread has tipped me over the edge. I’m feeling more anxious and panicky than I have in ages.

Ibake · 29/07/2020 18:52

@NowYouListenToMeFella it's (normally) fab! We meet every other month, decide on a theme. Someone hosts and we all take along our bake. Then we try what everyone has made, swap recipes, drink fizz, share the disasters and go home feeling sick. What's not to like? We've been going for about 7 years now.

I see we are back to the "your child is your responsibility" when it comes to schools not opening (which tbh I think they will open) and people not being able to work. Complete empathy bypass with some people most likely not having to worry about paying the bills.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 29/07/2020 19:00

Also, where has the idea that we are 2 weeks away from a second wave come from?

Can I join your bake club @Ibake I am making Galaktoboureko (like a custard pie in filo flavoured with citrus syrup) tomorrow (time permitting) for DH to take to work on Friday.

wanderings · 29/07/2020 19:03

There's a clickbait AIBU where an OP is angry about their DH hugging their own bereaved father. Surprisingly (for MN) the replies are almost unanimously in favour of the hugging. Smile

There is a happy medium between panic and complete denial that we face a dangerous virus (not bubonic plague but not seasonal flu either).

Schools need to return pretty much regardless, as people need to earn money and children need to be educated.

However, having sensible guidelines in place about social distancing, mask wearing and avoiding large indoor gatherings are just common sense.

Sometimes I think that we are quite a selfish nation. In France, virtually everyone wore masks moving about indoors, they were not thinking of any excuse not to wear one.

A vaccine is so much better than herd immunity and, IMO, one will come within the next few months.

Reading the plans for welsh children just now is pretty depressing, finishing at 1.40pm will not suit many parents. My region start at 9,15 which also is not helpful.
Ibake · 29/07/2020 19:07

This. Absolutely.
It should be pinned to the top of the coronavirus board.

Yes definitely, I don’t think anyone bar conspiracy theorists are in denial about us facing a potentially dangerous virus. I’m not sure on the point about France though... I have many many friends and family who live in France (I used to live there myself), and in Spain, and there’s a lot of moaning about mask wearing in both those countries from what I’ve seen and heard. Of course there, like here, the vast majority are complying (even with the grumbling about it), but I don’t think they’re particularly more biddable than we are.
TheOrchidKiller · 29/07/2020 19:19

Forgive me, ADs, for I have sinned.

(Whispers) I have ironed a mask.

I don't know what came over me.

It was a professionally-sewn pleated one which DD acquired & gave to me (it's "too baggy"). It was sitting there, all wrinkled, I had a steaming hot iron in my hand, before I knew it there was a hiss & contact...

Won't do it again (unless the priest from Fleabag is judging....)

Drivingdownthe101 · 29/07/2020 19:21

I also don’t think you’ll find anyone on these threads who thinks there shouldn’t be sensible measures in place either, @larrygrylls. Did you come here under the impression that we’re all covid deniers or something?

Bollss · 29/07/2020 19:22

Not caught up yet but in regards to money actually lockdown has proved we don't need as much as we thought we did.

We aren't high earners we don't have professional jobs but we do ok.

We have a nice enough house, a car, enough money for birthdays, Christmas and an abroad holiday every year.

Only recently have we had that luxury though. I was always striving for a better job, more money and now I don't think I will. I think I'm going to try and enjoy what we have.

Equally we are probably classed as very poor by some on here but It doesn't bother me, we are likely much better off than others on here too. We could probably just afford to isolate for two weeks because I can WFH now if needs be but given the choice I wouldn't iyswim.

Seconded...I don't think anyone has said that this isn'tr a nasty virus and measures are required. Also from my observation and experience the majority of people are wearing masks, washing hands and keeping their distance. We are.
Drivingdownthe101 · 29/07/2020 19:31

Yes, us too. We moan on here about masks, but in the main from what I’ve read we wear them when we have to (or stay out of shops, or don’t wear them if truly exempt).
I think that’s what bothers me... it’s not enough that we comply with the rules on masks, it seems that unless we’re activity happy about it then we’re selfish. How is it selfish if we’re complying? It’s a weird sort of thought policing.
