Staying near Eden project. Weather not forecast to be great. Not paying £29 for the Eden Project. And all national trust houses are closed.

In between Looe and Fowey there are some fantastic beaches slightly off the beaten track...Lantivet, Palace Cove, Lansallos, Lantic Bay. Beautiful walks along the south west coast path between them all.

Seal sanctuary in gweek. A family fave for us. Or tate in St ives

Haven't RTFT so apologies if these have been discounted.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/07/2020 18:52

Go home.

sunnyday1976 · 28/07/2020 20:04

@Toddlerteaplease oh I'm so jealous!!
Looks gorgeous!

Ragwort · 28/07/2020 20:10

Didn't you go to the Jubilee Pool in Penzance ? Love it, have you been to Falmouth yet? Lovely beaches or take a boat trip. My DPs used to live not far from the seal sanctuary, happy memories, we are going to Cornwall end of August, looking forward to it..

boatyardblues · 28/07/2020 20:16

You could go for a mooch around Fowey and eat at Sam's. Or go to Polkerris and eat at Sam's on the Beach

Are you up for a coastal walk? You can do a reasonable walk (c 5 miles) from Polkerris to the Gribbin tower (lighthouse) and back. There’s probably a way over fields to make a circular walk of it, but the coastal path has lovely views.

Ragwort · 28/07/2020 21:06

Which YHA are you staying it?

Toddlerteaplease · 28/07/2020 21:39

Am at YHA Eden Project. Thought it would be quite picturesque. But it's actually a gravel car park. But it's a good base. Am off to Winchester tomorrow, then Oxford. With a day trip to London. As the train is cheaper from
Oxford than from home. I was going to get to Salisbury cathedral on the way. But it closes very early. And the exhibition I wanted to see in Winchester is also closed. Am
Tire into the hotel bookings so will have to go Wish I was staying longer in Cornwall.

We went to Eden Project 2 years ago. They are so up themselves!
Very disappointing, took us ages to get in because they want emails and names of customers so they can deluge you and the children separately with spam letters and emails scrounging money for fancy projects.
Inside it was crowded and everything there was worn and tired.
Lost Gardens are good, but not the showiest around.

We liked the countryside and North coast better. More dramatic, not pretty.
Try reading Jamaica Inn and House on the Strand there. Real drama in both.

boatyardblues · 28/07/2020 22:13

@Bouledeneige

I live Glendurgan gardens with the maze and you end up down on the river. Years ago I used to take the kids to a mine when it was raining. I think it was the Poldark mine but I'm not sure it's open now.
The beach at Glendurgan has lots of flat pebbles - ideal for skimming stones, if that’s your thing. If I recall, there are footpaths down outside of the NT property so you can still enjoy the beach if the house and gardens are shut.

Watching! Off to Cornwall on Saturday. Loving all the recommendations. Not going to be able to fit it all in!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/07/2020 22:39

Eden is crap really. Was good when it opened 20 years ago, but it’s not invested in tech and is dated.

Polkeriss is cute little beach. Near to you.

Who’s got the cats?

Toddlerteaplease · 29/07/2020 10:20

@DobbyTheHouseElk the cats are in the cattery. No doubt being spoilt rotten!

Currently sitting in Lanhydrock Garden before heading back to Fowey. Thanks for the Fowey recommendations, I'd have never gone there otherwise. It's absolutely stunning.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/07/2020 10:22

I've been very surprised how quiet everything is. Having to book rhinhfs is a bit of a pain. But it's certainly more peaceful!

OP posts:
DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/07/2020 11:16

Glad the cats are ok. They look like they are being well cared for in the Cattery.

Lanhydrock is a decent garden/grounds. We went in October and the gardens were lovely. The house is dull. You get room fatigue. I normally love NT houses, but didn’t enjoy Lanhydrock inside. We did enjoy Trerice. But I don’t expect it’s open at all. It’s a small property.

On the way from Lanhydrock to fowey is a EH castle. Romunstal castle. You can probably see it from a viewpoint.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/07/2020 11:17

Restormal castle

Menaimum · 29/07/2020 11:24

Falmouth national maritime museum next time it rains. It's well interpreted for young visitors.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/07/2020 11:27

Glad you had a lovely time OP, you're in my neighbourhood.
It's interesting that you think everything is quiet - just goes to show how we get stuck in our little bubbles living down here, and forget what 'busy' really is like for most people

The sweet spot for being in Cornwall is spring and autumn - when there aren't many visitors but the weather can still be stunning. I'm very lucky living here.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/07/2020 11:35

I used to love Lanhydrock house as a kid. But unfortunately it's not open. Nor are any NT houses.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/07/2020 11:36

Think I need to have a cream tea before I leave Cornwall!

OP posts:
DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/07/2020 11:45

Very few NT houses are open. They are trialling a few with strict rules. Most now have the gardens open for re-bookings.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 29/07/2020 12:36

Fowey is such a gem!!
Are you in the shipping container at yha! I looked at them but discounted as didn't look like any access to fresh air!
